So I got a chance to play with the new codex today. I was cautionary optimistic before but I have to say with all the doom in gloom I was not only pleased with how the new codex works but pleasantly suspired as it surpassed my expectations over all. I found it to be much more effective than last edition.
I see this codex as perfectly viable in 6th edition. It is not a "Fire and forget" codex. You have to choose you model combinations and tactics carefully and they require a bit of skill be successful. But I would say there are more viable models to choose from than before and the army has more viable builds then before.
As far as criticisms go I would have liked to have seem more uniquely Tyranid rules and I wish my beloved genestealer would have been given a little boost and the loss of spores is very disappointing. Also I fully acknowledge that there are some nonplayeble units in the codex and some of the most popular builds of 5th edition cannot be done, or are not as effective now. But on the whole I see the codex as stronger and more flexible then 5th edition.

A few things. For one Crones are good skimmer killers. Fly over vector strike it and drool on the rear armor. No jink saves possible. Horamagaunts are very fast (never moved less than 11 inches the a turn the whole game) and cheap. They never killed anything but they help 3 objectives and tarpitted extremely well as they got to where they needed in faster than my opponent could (and he had skimmer transports). (but they need to be run in 20+ broods to be effective). The exocrine is extremely flexible It is very good a downing heavy infantry but it actually works a poor mans AA and AT gun pretty well too and does alright in CC as long as you are carful who you put it up against. Hive Tyrants are much more lethal BS 4 makes them much better gunners and Warp Blast is really nasty you get it on a Flyrant. Their haywire attack upgrade is a very good idea for flyrants as well. Lastly the new boneswords are killer when paired with poison. You have good odds of killing a Wraithkight on the charge.
On the whole I think the new units fill some very desperately needed gaps and the price drops bring some prior unusable models back on the table in big way. The army feels much more well rounded to me.

To be fair, I played against it today with my friend. From our messed up meta's perspective the new codex is pretty good because everything he takes got better.
Molocks are terrifying now. Lictors are a much bigger bullet sponge. Deathleaper is the mother of all bullet sponges. The Horror psychic power terrifies my little Tau heart... all in all life could be worse for Tyranids everywhere.
To be fair, I tabled him turn 4. But I did that consistently before, and it actually took lucky rolls this time. I denied the witch on 3/4 of the Horror powers thrown at me on the turn it mattered. I think that was the only deny the witch I have ever passed since 6th edition dropped and I got 3 in one turn.
Anyway, I'm rambling.

Has it been declared dead or just boring and uninspiring? If it doesnt capture the imagination and make people want to start the army or renew an existing collection then it can be judged a faildex, but that will take some time to decide.
What doesnt take a lot of time to decide is whether or not it appeals to ultracompetitive players who know exactly what they want out of a tournament list. That group of players has passed judgement on the dex.

I suppose I should note that this was a friendly game (but that is all I do). Perhaps the tournament scene will be different but if you just play with friends or at a local club I think this codex will do you just fine.

Boring, time will tell. Uninspiring? I don't think so, Tryanids have one of the best, if not the best, looking model ranges in the game.

And the thing that irks that group the most is that GW doesn't take them into account, not even one little bit, when they write a new Codex or Rule Book.

Honestly I wish they took those people into account just because it would probably balance the codices a bit more. If a competitive play can be made and it has more diversity in armies and units then how can this not help casual players (totally not me being selfish and being a casual player that is more into campaigns cough)?
In all seriousness, Time will tell on what will really do. Nids gained quite a bit but also lost a bit. Some things didn't change whilst others did. They lost 4 models and they gained 3-4 models. They lost drop pods but gained more fliers, flyrants got cheaper but tervigons got pricier and gaunts are cheaper but upgraded gaunts cost more. It's... odd. Heck I like to say the codex at this moment feels a lot like zoantrhopes. They got better and worse at the same time.

GW doesn't take anyone into account when they write a new Codex or Rule Book.
They don't even seem to care about their shareholders.

I am Blue/White Take The Magic Dual Colour Test - Beta today! Created with Rum and Monkey's Personality Test Generator.I'm both orderly and rational. I value control, information, and order. I love structure and hierarchy, and will actively use whatever power or knowledge I have to maintain it. At best, I am lawful and insightful; at worst, I am bureaucratic and tyrannical.

I find passive aggressive messages in people's signatures quite amusing. |

I'm not sure what the model range has to do with the codex. The codex is uninspiring because it's overly simplistic and lacks options. It has nothing to do with how cool the models are.
