Make him an upgrade option for broods. For every 10 models in the squad, one pyrovore may be taken as a character model in the brood. No longer takes up a valuable Elites slot, no longer some sort of sick joke out in the open as hes inside of a unit, can also tank wounds if necessary (though on gaunts this isn't really relevant). Some sort of weapon upgrade would be advantageous as well, though points cost may have to be reconsidered. Maybe even make it so that having at least 2 pyrovores fire at the target unit (and hit it!) before charging lets the brood count as having assault grenades.
Maybe s4 (or s3) ap3 "acid" template. Its supposed to be a feeder and digestion organism. Everything on him is acid, except for the fire. And if the codex lacks anything its low ap shooting. I think it would be good enough to be usable but not op.
And I totally missed the part about acid maw being limited to one attack. Someone had to say "wait... pyrovores are too good... we need to take them down a peg..."

Doesn't an IG Hellhound's Inferno Cannon has some additional range before placing the flame template? That should allow him to keep his distance.
I also agree with the person that mentioned an upgrade to a Warrior squad, just maybe a cheap or even free upgrade if it's replacing a Warrior.

My take on it: make it scary and let the player figure out how to get close to the enemy.
1: Flamespurt: template S5 AP(1D6) As1.
2: Acid Maw: ignore the sentence before the profile (the one saying it is a single attack).
Spoiler:
Other solutions like AP3 for the Flamespurt may be broken and sound too much "against space marines". The Pyrovore now has a chance of obliterating heavy infantry at range, yet it is not statistically more powerful (AP4 -> AP(3.5)). It is however a menace that must be taken care of.
The buff to Acid Maw would be a little too much in other unit, but keep in mind it is a W2 I2 WS3 A2 Sv4+ 40 points model.
So that is a S5 AP(1d6) template followed by three S5 AP2 close combat attacks. Who is laughing now?

Best solution I came up with was reducing him to 2 wounds and making him a beast.
Torrent seemed a little over the top to me.
Giving the Pyrovore beast type movement doesn't make much sense given that it's built like a tortoise. I just can't imagine the fat thing moving with anything resembling speed or grace unless it turned itself around and used it's flame spout as a jet engine.

Son... Just don't.
The old meta is dead and the new meta struggles to be born. Now is the time of munchkins.

The problem is Acid maw. Previously, Acid Maw could be used like it was an AP2 ccw, but now with the sub all attacks for one crappy one (despite the AP2), it's gone down. The biggest strike against pyrovores is the loss of pods.
Make them an assault unit: keep acid maw, add acid blood standard, and make them beasts. pretty much the anti-assault unit; you charge them, they overwatch with heavy flamers, then if you wound them, they bleed all over you.
Or how about, as previously suggested, making them upgrades to a brood or Gaunts or Hormies? Normally I despise this idea type, I prefer to see units are their own, but in the case of the Pyrovore it must be down.
No to giving them beast. They are slow, dumb and fethwits, even says so in the (5th ed at least) codex that the Flamespurt has a bigger brain and better reactions.
