Anybody heard of or participates in a Warhammer based LARP?

I have heard of some, but they are all:
a) Warhammer Fantasy-based
b) In Europe

It's quite likely there are 40K larps SOMEWHERE in the US, but not in numbers anyway...

1400 points of EW/MW Italians (FoW)
2200 points of SoB and Inquisition (40K)
1000 points of orks (40K)
Just starting out with Ultramarines (30K)
Four 1000-2500 point forces for WHFB (RIP)
One orc team (Blood Bowl)

I can't really imagine a 40k larp to be all that interesting, I mean...how do you larp getting obliterated by a basilisk shell from range?

More importantly, where would you get a styrofoam exploding shell in the first place?

Still, I've heard of people doing it with airsoft weapons. After all, it's not that hard to imagine the maybe 20 players you'd have not to have any vehicles...

You could even get more powerful guns for certain people, and just give gaurdsmen a laser pointer .

Ranged weapons in LARP are usually fairly sketchy, it would only really work if everyone was dedicated melee. Even then, the weight of replica armour (say terminator armour) would be too heavy or cumbersome to use for a prolonged period. A guy near me has built a full scale terminator suit and boy, it is hard to move in.

I've played a couple ranged LARP(Wierd West using rubber band guns, homebrew using modded NERF, Airsoft based, even Fantasy that allowed 15 lbs draw Bows). The problem is, it's hard to balance because there really is no middle ground between Airsoft(good range, projectile relatively unaffected by wind so aim remains) and others(even the newer Nerf disks and Elite darts with better range are inaccurate thanks to wind and don't get me started on rubber band guns), which leads to either melee is useless unless you jump someone in a dark alley because you'll never last as soon as you leave cover or guns are useless because you won't do enough at a charging opponent before he gets to you and cuts you down.

Which is why CC would never be used when people have access to guns.
