I'm thinking of fielding a 1000 point grunts only list for an upcoming contest at a local store. Rules are no vehicles, no unique characters or named characters. Walkers will be ok.

What would make a good 1000 point ork list?

I'll throw my hat into the ring.

Here's my list, 1000 points exactly.

2x Big Mek, KFF, eavy armour.

4x 30 Shoota Boys, 1x big shoota, nob w/ eavy armour, bosspole.

I can't think of a list without vehicles that wouldn't have some trouble killing 120 Orks.

120 boyz is a serious list. Personally I don't own that many boyz (... yet ). Kannons and lobbas have paid for themselves in every game I fielded them. You could bring a small unit of Nobz with a Pain Boy + FNP, maybe even with kombi weapons for a tough and hard hitting unit. Since walkers are OK... you might be facing dreadnaughts. Consider taking something that can deal with that (rokkits, Lootas, etc.). You could take a Big Mek and then add a Deffdread as troops. It would be expensive, but potentially useful. Or if you're crazy, bring a kan wall.

Question: what units do you have at your disposal?

I have - starting army of only 90 Boyz, and a war boss. Everything else is open to consideration.

I also have about 4500 PTS worth of SMs to throw on the table

Would you rather go and 'play' 40k, or would you rather put a bunch of models on a table, move them towards the nearest enemy model each turn, and roll dice for three hours?

If its the latter, go for this tide, if the former, I'd suggest bikers or something

I know I'll be going up against dreadnoughts or some form of a walker. Maybe I do bring a deffdred? Should I skip power klaws all together?

I'm thinking of bring this list.

How to auto-win with Orks under your restrictions;

~Big Mek, KFF, Bosspole
~30x Shoota Boyz, 3x Big Shoota
~30x Shoota Boyz, 3x Big Shoota
~30x Shoota Boyz, 3x Big Shoota
[would take more but you only have 30]
~3x Kannons
~3x Kannons
~3x Kannons

145pts left for whatever you have models for. Maybe drop 5pts somewhere and take two lots of five lootas

Goodbye skill, hello sweet taste of victory

Edit; don't take a deff dread if you want to win. They're trash

It's nice but you're asking me to purchase $260 in kannons. Unless you can think of a cheaper alternative I could use to proxy the kannons.

Use the kannons you get from the battlewagon sprue/uppgrade sprue and get some toy wheels(lego fitts) i made 9 this way and still legit to use on a GW due being over 50% gw bitz

If you can't think of a decent replacement model for kannons I honestly think you should go play with those space marines you mentioned

I know some might say I need to get over the deff dred, now is it mandatory to have a Nob within a group of 30 boys?

I came up with this list

Big Mek with KFF

3x 30 boys 2 shoota one slugga/choppa
Big Mek deff dred w/ 4 CCW

1 deff copta
1 deff copta

9 kannons with 2 runts ea

Boys with no Nobs

I can always bring the Nobs back to replace the dred

Its far from mandatory, I'd honestly say its a bad idea.

If your taking the dread, drop the CCW and use it as a platform for duel skorchas. It can do some solid damage that way if it actually lives long enough (which it is unlikely to), far more damage for less points than the extra weapons.

If possible run all boyz as shootas, but if you don't have the models the slugga boyz might benefit from a Nob

I've seen conversions made from Hunter-Killer missiles mounted on dollar store truck frames (Hot Wheels sized). Cheap and effective. That list is really good, btw.

It's an iPad app called Quartermaster. You can then download army templates from here.

I've thought about this for a bit. Green Tide can be beat rather easily with any non-vehicle army, especially when they are exchanging stronger weapons for more shots, rapid fire with devastate any green tide.

My main suggestion is warbikes - the main reason is they are not considered vehicles and they are the best that the 4th edition Orks have.

HQ Warboss (Warbike, Cybork, P Klaw, Attack Squig, B-pole) 155
Warboss (Warbike, Cybork, P Klaw, Attack Squig) 150
Troops 10 Nob Bikers (Painboy,Cybork, Waaagh! Banner) 545
3 Nob Bikkers (Waaagh! Banner) 150

What about:

Big Mek, KFF 85
10 lootas 150
20 boys, 2x big shoota 130
20 boys, 2x big shoota 130
20 boys, 2x big shoota 130
20 boys, 2x big shoota 130
10 stormboyz 120
10 stormboyz 120

Nobs are superfluous with the current codex; they do nothing but die.

I have always really wanted to love stormboyz. the biggest problem is they are really just expensive Boyz, just like a Big Mek with a KFF is just another superfluous expensive Nob.

with a group of 10 you lose the mob rules so removing 3 stormboy will probably mean you will lose the unit.

IMO - I agree that Nobs by themselves aren't worth it though the two wounds are usually infinatly better than any Boyz unit (regular boyz, tankbustas, Lootas, Kommando and stormboyz). But a Nob unit with Waaagh! Banner and a Warboss PK and attack squig is a deadly combination. Now just add the Painboy for the invulnerable roll from Cybork and Feel No Pain. After that put them all on a Bike that gives 4+ armor/cover, don't forget the Dakka Gun (which your Pain Boy also uses) and they become very difficult to kill, very fast killing machines.

Also don't forget that if your opponent is within 6" of your Big Mek they also gain the benefit of the KFF as well.
