BEARER OF THE WORD - AN INTERVIEW WITH ANTHONY REYNOLDS

Hey readers,

Today we catch up with Anthony Reynolds, author of the new Horus Heresy limited edition novella The Purge.
Ant is no stranger to the Word Bearers, having a full trilogy of Warhammer 40,000 novels that feature the sons of Lorgar under his belt. Here’s what he has to say about his first solo Horus Heresy book:

Black Library: Tell us about The Purge.

Anthony Reynolds: The Purge follows the story of Captain Sor Talgron across a pair of alternating timelines. One thread tracks the final attack against an important world in Ultramar as part of the Shadow Crusade; the other takes place on Terra, and shows something of what Sor Talgron was doing there before word of the Isstvan III atrocity gets through. It’s a book of firsts for me – the first time I’ve written a story set on Terra, the first time I’ve included the Adeptus Custodes in a story, and the first chance I’ve had to write Rogal Dorn as a character. It was also a book I wrote while travelling, which was an unusual first for me – definitely challenging, but also very rewarding.

BL: You've written a lot of Word Bearers fiction now, both with your Warhammer 40,000 series and during the Horus Heresy. What appeals to you about the XVII Legion?

Ant: I love the XVII Legion, and I think part of what appeals to me about them is that I don’t believe they see themselves as the bad guys (well, not all of them, anyway). They believe in what they are doing, and truly see it as the only way forward for humanity – their path is the one true path to enlightenment, and the one way that humanity will survive. What if they are right?

BL: What are the main differences between the Word Bearers in The Purge, and the characters that readers will be familiar with from your Warhammer 40,000 series?

Ant: Well, if you imagine the Word Bearers' journey as an arc – starting when they still venerated the Emperor and had not yet given themselves to Chaos, and ending where they do in my Word Bearers series, in full frothing Chaos-worshipping mode – then The Purge is halfway along that journey. Not everyone in the Legion has fully embraced the new path yet – the Legion is in transition.

BL: Any parting thoughts?

Ant: Kill. Maim. Burn.

Thanks Ant.

he Purge is available to order now in a stunning hardback limited edition. It's selling fast though, with fewer than 550 of the 3,350 originally printed remaining. Order your copy now, while stocks last.

That’s all for today,
Thanks for reading.

Thought for the day:
“Let the galaxy burn…”

The Talon of Horus
A First Edition: coming this August

The Talon of Horus is the first novel in the highly anticipated Black Legion series. Here in the BL office, we couldn't be more excited about this book: a story of the galaxy's ultimate bad guy penned by the master of 40k antiheroes, Aaron Dembski-Bowden.
The Talon of Horus will be the first book released under the new banner of First Edition. We don’t want to give too much away at this stage but here’s what Aaron thought when we showed him the book –
Aaron Dembski-Bowden

"It's terrifying and humbling to see the series kick off with the freaking glorious First Edition, but it's a weighty and classy tome fit for use in any Black Legion Apostle's sermon."

- Aaron Dembski-Bowden
This sneak peek gives you a glimpse of the detailed cover embossing, just one of the many special treatments this book’s been given. Without a doubt, First Edition: The Talon of Horus is the most lavish book we’ve produced to date. What's more, it will be released a whole two weeks ahead of the standard hardback, and you’ll be able to pick up your copy from Friday 22nd August, only on blacklibrary.com.

The First Edition of The Talon of Horus will be a rare beast indeed and only a small number of them will ever be printed. To make sure you don’t miss out on a chance to own a copy, sign up for Comm-Feed - the Limited Edition Text Reminder Service.

... well.. whilst I'm sure the special edition will be lovely suspect it'll be a bit too steep for my pockets. Might purchase the regular hardback edition .... or even wait for the paperback edition.

Time'll tell.

So does anyone have a review of the HH book about the dinosaurs? I recall making some comments about how it sounded awful and kinda want to know if it is or not but have no interest in getting the hardback.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I thought Damnation of Pythos was the best HH book in years, its a bit bleak as it covers the changes to the soul of the Iron Hands, but very good IMO, your mileage may vary.

Without spoilering it too much, when you talk about changes, does that mean them becoming more bitter and filled with suppressed rage & hatred as they used to be in 40K, or does it mean they're using the "beep-boop, emotions are illogical Jim" Borg-Vulcan daddy-issues crap from the new codex?

They juxtapose a more human both emotionally and physically Iron Hand and one who has gone all in with the migration to machine so there is an element of the stereotypical machine man but feelings of rage and betrayal are the driving forces of the legion in this book.

So I had the MMPB of Unremembered Empire on order from Amazon, and it should have been available to us plebs from yesterday.

I've had no dispatch notification, and it's showing 8-10 days availability. Anyone else been similarly affected? Oversold on pre-orders or GW playing the "sorry, we're mysteriously out of stock for anyone that isn't one of our stores" game with a retailer the size of the big A?

Hmm that's funny, Foyles have it but only from their US store - from the UK only the big-ass paperback version, despite having it a week ago when I last looked.

Waterstones online is the only place that seems to be selling it, at a 1.60 discount..

I'll wait, Amazon have it with more off and I won't need to pay for delivery. Intrigued whether this is just a glitch or some symptom of behind the scenes shenanigans.

Armegeddon -- the planet/warzone in 40k not the actual end of the world ... hopefully anyway ... -- appears to be the topic this week for BL.

OK, slight shift in topic, but I was wondering; does anyone have any advice for finding OOP Black Library books at a reasonable price? I don't mean super-rare stuff either, just the swathes of their catalogue that they inexplicably stop printing seemingly at random.

For example, I decided to go and complete my set of Gotrek & Felix books yesterday and not only is the selection on the BL site utterly pitiful, but even secondhand online folk are asking ludicrous amounts of money(like £60-90) for the 4th omnibus and even the individual books are hardly cheap.

Amazon sells all the old and out-of-print stuff second hand, and the quality is good, especially if you don't mind ex-library books. Some are as new, depends on how lucky you are and how much you are willing to spend.

Oh for feth's sake, I just want to read the bloody story I'm not even remotely interested in how "sumptuous" the fething dust jacket or binding is. And you just know this means even more delays before we can just buy, you know, a bloody book instead of what BL have laughably convinced themselves is some kind of super-special-premium product.

It's like they don't even want people to read what they publish any more. First they insert that annoying trade paperback format into the release schedule so the basic "I just want to read this without having to barter away a kidney" paperback is a year+ behind the initial release(making spoilers almost impossible to avoid if you, and I know this is a bit mad, socialise with other Warhammer players), then they make hardbacks direct-order only(because Gods forbid Amazon "devalues" their "luxury brand" by charging less than sticker price), now we get to wait even longer while they put out ludicrous super-ultra-mega-special edition hardback versions at forty bloody pounds a pop first.

Bloody numpties.

Yes , BL are really a bit of a puzzle . I used to be addicted to the HH series and ready for my next fix . Now I only notice new releases accidentally on Amazon several months after initial release . As a result my interest in the series is waning . It all seems like a marketing idea gone haywire but the original folks who are responsible for it are either not willing to acknowledge they have made a mistake ... or they really are't seeing much of an impact to sales .

Well they're getting less money out of me for sure, I borrowed Vengeful Spirit from the library, and I'll do the same with Pythos if I bother at all. Last year I spent most of my book budget on rebuying Alastair Reynolds' Revelation Space series, and this year's has gone up to now on completing my Asimov collection and from now on will be spent buying up the whole Dresden Files series. I was one of the folks that would be in the GW store day-1 to grab the new HH when they just came in paperbacks, and I was happy to buy Gaunt's Ghosts even when they started the whole hardback thing because I could get them for a more rational price online. These days between the ludicrous "format parade" and the £20 direct-only hardbacks, I only read BL books if I can get them free because their anti-consumer behaviour doesn't deserve to be rewarded.
