I'm about to finish off my Meganobz squad at long last, bringing it up to three strong, and was thinking of how I was going to use them on the tabletop. My thoughts were to simply put them in a trukk and roll them forward to krump stuff. However recently I thought they might be useful for holding a backfield objective. My reasoning behind this is that the'd be pretty difficult to displace, and would stand a chance against my brother's DW, who have a habit of DS'ing late in the game and jumping all my objectives, pushing me off them and ruining my day. Is this a reasonable tactic or a waste of 120pts that should be beating the ever-living gak out of marines and the like?

Meganobz camping cover seems like Markerlit Iontide bait to me. Also, Nobz kind of want to get into someone's face for some bashing. Their statline and equipment pretty much demands that they get out there and start bashing. Having them sit in the back seems like a waste of their potential.

Well if he is using all that to shoot your backfield objective holders, then you will be in good shape.
I actually think the meganobz as objective holders makes sense.

Too much AP2 shooting, especially S10 AP1 pie plates, for this to be a remotely good idea when you could get like 30+ gretchin for the same price.

It's never been my plan to have them sit on objectives but when their trukk or BW gets blown up first turn I improvise and if they are to far from the action and they are scoring ya I will move them to a back objective and go to ground. If a MA warboss is with them maybe have him leave and join the lootas in the back.

This is the big problem. I used to run 2 squads of 3 in Trukks (1 as a troop choice, 1 as an elite) and no matter where those 3 went, a spare lascannon or railgun would disintegrate one, then the remaining two would flee in a turn.

For 120 pts you can get 20 boyz. Pay 10 more and they get 2 bigshootas. Not only they're better at holding points - they're way better footslogging forward if needed. And taking into consideration the ammount of rending and ap2 - they're more durable than meganobz.
So i say meganobz belong in a wagon and boyz can go anywhere - they're universal.

I am not normally an Ork player. However I decided to become one for fun and played 8 games using a grot based army. the unit of 10 Meganobz was nigh unstoppable. Truly, get 10 and Krump with them. They are just really fantastic units. Holding them in the rear to hold an objective isn't a terrible policy but my GAWD they can be good at Krumping. I wouldn't want to lose that potential if i were you, giving that they can score forward objectives while doing so.

What did you do with them? Stick them in a wagon? slog them under a KFF?
How did you get them to the fight, and stop them getting AP2pieplated into a gooey mess on the way in?

First, I took Zzapp guns and killed the AP2 templates. My Kommandos killed what they couldn't see.
Meanwhile the Grots formed screens the eenmy couldn't get through easily. Grots, front and back and worth nothing, piled forward with Nobz in the middle. This guaranteed I would be doing the charging.
The enemy could not come close because the Maganobz would kill them. The enemy assault troops were no match, so shooting it was! And when you shoot 2+ T4 models with 2 wounds each, its slooooow going when theres 10 of them getting cover saves from grots..
In the ened I could approach them. they couldn't approach me. Shooting me went too slow and they lost. Yay orks.
The one time I lost before giving the stuff back to my buddy for good was against an Nacron/Ork combo army. Failed LD at a critical moment with the Meganobz. Cost me the game. That was the only loss. Had I not, I would have crashed his line and killed his leader and his unit. Instead his annihilation Barges and other shooting got to fire on me while I regrouped and the following turn as I re-approached. By the time the charge happened, they got me. two turns of extra shooting on them did it. thats two turns they NORMALLY wont get.
10 Meganobz with 60 grots around worked wonders for me.

Vindicators? 9 Zzap guns with Ammo runts. and if that doesn't work, do it again.
Also: side shots with War buggies.
As for Riptides (Str 9 ap 2 large blast) you gotta have ap 2. So look forthe AP 2 in the codex and include it. This is why I use Kommandos. Once im back there and free to act, the enemy has to deal with me and not whats coming. its about forcing choices on the enemy: kill 2 Meganobz and lose two scoring units? Hmm... Sounds terrible when I say it that way right? Kill ALL their scoring units and the grots become the most valuable asset on the board. You think they'll relish shooting THEM? hehehehe.

LD 7 as said kills these as objective holders really. I played against a unit of about 6 of them last weekend, and 2 terminators instagibbed 4 of them, and one lone infantryman also in the combat ran the rest down and swept them. Lost the terminators in the exchange, but it was their low LD that evened up the combat.

An Ion Riptide with Markerlight support is going to be killing a lot more than two Manz.

I always feel like it doesn't matter what unit we talk about on Tactics everyone always reverts to "You can't do that someone is gonna bulldoze it with a screamer star and then drop four Ion Cannonz on it".
Meganobz, they are tough, but it takes one Str 8, AP2 shot or better to force a Ld check on a 7. Just doesn't seem dependable for objective holding.

Yes Riptides are cool. But when you spread out, with a large based model, they hit only 2, 3 if you messed up. 1/3 of those die. So 2.
But if you kill the riptide, he kills zero. Which is why you need AP 2. Shock Attack Guns, zzap guns, whatever has AP 2 is worth taking in an ork army that features Meganobz and frankly with all the gretchen you're taking, you can afford it. Lol. Remind that Riptide every round that it can be killed, and then do it. in the meantime, you may have to use some ruin terrain (if available) on the approach if you can't trust your gretchen for cover. If you want a perfect solution, play something besides war games.
10 Meganobz is totally and utterly bad ass.

I think it gets outside the purpose of this 3 Man 120 point unit though. Like if we were talking about 19 Grots standing in an objective I really feel like someone is going to go "My 300 points of Missilesides will just ..." and dismiss the 67 point unit of grots as bad for the purpose of objective holding.
Really though a group of Meganobz I send screaming at something with a 2+ or 3+ save completly oblivious to objectives short of maybe getting the meganobz stuck in with a deckchair unit of 19 grots only on turn 5.

10 Meganobz
9 Zzap Guns with Ammo Runts and xtra krew. 'Cause Riptides and Tough 7 (vs. shooting) Grots.
a shock attack gun on a big mek, a Warboss
65 gretchen
30 ShootaBoyz w/ 3 Big shootas
9 Lootas and 15 kommandos for added reach and disruption
6 Warbuggies with Rokkits for side arc goodness, swarm killin' and even scoring in one of the missions.
That's what I took
I was 8-1. I'd never...ever...used orks before that. Or since.

I've played many many games with 3 MANz in a Trukk and they are my most variable results unit. They always attracted more fire than they're worth. I have used them as back field units but they (and they're Trukk) each equal a unit of grots.
4 units of Grots is better than One unit of MANz in Trukk.
Keeping in a Trukk is a great IF you are hell bent on using them though. Forces an opponent 2 units to kill a single Mob. BLOS is easy enough to setup on your side especially when you're playing objective games.
Right now I'm playing 3 Mobs of Lootas in 3 Looted Wagons on a Landing Pad. I could easily fit a MANz missile Trukk on the back behind the LW's. Might have to do that this week. Last week my opp. sent 2 full pods of Grey Hunters after my Lootas, this might help as a counter-attack unit.

You're assuming the Tau player doesn't see that plan coming from a mile away and doesn't place a unit of Kroot around the Riptide. He could also be deploying the Riptide next to a table edge to force you to risk scatter that takes you off the table.
In short, no, they wouldn't.
