Since around the release of stronghold/escalation I have seen less and less. Last 3 weeks one game a day. Now I know the holidays were going on and would slow play down, but the people who got new shinies for christmas should have been back at it to try out their new toys. Cant say I blame them. Just those being "official" has left such a bad taste in my mouth I finally gave in after years of fighting it and started collecting trollbloods for warmahordes. Now I still like the fun I have in 40k, but the rules are alot less sloppy and feel like they are written by people who actually give a crap.

I miss 40k, but no games kills my enthuisam to bring my models on a 40+ minute drive a couple times a week.

Happens . I remember that a last year people got crazy here about some sort of ship game , 3 months of fun and then everyone quit. I even wanted to buy an army , but had no cash . Am actualy happy that I didn't .

I guess it is either finding another place to play or switching game systems . 1 game per 3 weeks is realy bad use of money.

I still see plenty of people playing 40k in my area but.. well lets just say I have no respect for the person running that club as it is very much 'play what I play or I don't want to know you'.

Having said that the store the used to support him is letting their GW stock shrink dramatically and has pulled the extra 5% off the club used to get and the club is slowly moving their terrain out of the store.

I think it's less your store, more the market as a whole that's slowly letting 40k fade into obscurity.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

Its definitely a failing game in my city, the stores who stock it now stock far less of it (One store has stopped stocking GW products completely) and at the game clubs I've been to there are maybe 2 or 3 games going if you're lucky.

It is usually cyclic. 40k will be big for a while, then fantasy, then something else. i it will swing back around and till it does, you just gotta put more effort into finding and setting up games.

If you think it is because of one of the new releases, talk to the other players and s what they say. If its because they dont wanna waste their time coming in to play a normal game to find all the other players having superheavies, work with them to ensure and set up normal games so they get what they want. Might even be possible for the store owner to announce on their website/facebook page/sign at the store that those rules are optional and to be prepared for either type of game when they come to the store.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
a lot of places will have different "groups' of players. Might be an idea to set up a 'club" or a facebook page dedicated to 40k players in your area (dont put the store's name in it because that could open up issues and stores like to control things with their name on it) where you can talk outside of the shop and set up games or even events. Be sure to invite the store owner to it though.

40k is still pretty prolific at my FLGS there is very few people playing warmachines or hordes, and Fantasy is only played by a few people.

Most people play 40k and I don't see that changing for a while. Me personally I am going to round out my armies to 2000 Points each (just started Eldar so not much to go for that) then I am going to stop collecting. I only play at home so 3 armies at 2000 points is fine for me.
My fantasy army will probably be the only one I collect as I am nearing 2000 points.

I just don't want to spend to much more money on this hobby. It is getting expensive so that might be why people are moving away from it.
Maybe your group of gamers are just growing out of the hobby though. Things change every now and then and maybe they are just taking a break due to various reasons.

I feel I went on a small tangent woops

Question for the OP: Do a lot of peeps play Tau and/or Eldar at your FLGS? I can see a lot of Tau and Eldar lists killing of the spirit of friendly gaming...

But yeah...in general, GW is slowly killing 40k. If we didn't already have the immense amount of money and time already sunk into it, we'd all have moved on to something else by now...

There is a Facebook page for 40k players in our area. Works really good for setting up games. You have some time and want a game post up something and set it up with someone. Maybe try something like that to get things going and you will not have to drive 40 minutes for nothing.

Most shops tend to do whatever possible in order to survive. I don't blame them. That's how marketing works. Though I still believe that LGSs with high community numbers still drop games and introduce better things. But we cannot blame a store if only 2 people buy 40k and it turns its profit into mtg or another card/wargame.

Yes, it is cyclic. Nothing to do with the game itself or the rules or armies played. watch any shop that has been open for any length of time. One game will be the rage for a while, then players grow bored of it or the shop will promote another, then another, then back to the original...
It keeps the place from becoming stagnant to the point of a MTG player telling their buddies "dont bother going in, all they do is play 40k. you have to keep things moving about to kep the customer base and new customers coming in.
Thats why you check out outside areas like facebook to set stuff like games and events up. If another game is the current rage, might need to work out scheduling for game tables to be open for you.

Fantasy died utterly at our store. To get a game you'd have to get on a forum somewhere and then beg them. And then if you are successful, you'd probably have a discussion about the Steadfast and Horde rules. And then if you're lucky this results in an actual game being played. But there isn''t ONE person who shows up to play Fantasy. Ever.

And there was a prtty healthy pool of us too. 12 at least were regularly playing and doing campaigns. But 8th Edition turned it into a Wasteland in a month. a MONTH. 40K would do well to recognize that risk.

I think it depends on how you play the game, I mean I don't run a club so much as I organise Games days every know and again for me and some friends and as regards Stronghold Assault and Escalation...

What is this apocalypse knock off you speak of?

We just house rule things that we agree would make the game less fun to play, its also generally accepted that you get a head slap for trying to squeeze a flier in below 750/1000 points. At least until every army gets THEIR OWN VIABLE anti air.

My local FLGS is into the competitive scene, several players change armies multiple times a year as new flavours drop every month. The local GW closed down over xmas too. This weekend however I played in a fluffy event that attracted over a dozen gamers. The FLGS scene doesn't represent the hobby in the same way as the Tournament scene doesn't either.

40k is going strong at the two most popular LGS in Phoenix. And the GW store here has multiple tables filled every day.
No one talks about how much they hate GW or vomplains about models, rules, etc.. its a great community, if it weren't for the internet I wouldn't have even known GW and 40k suck so bad.

Got one Taudar player at my FLGS (two actually, but they're father and son sharing the same army so it doesn't really count) and 2-3 Tau players.

Haven't killed the friendly spirit yet, but then again they usually aren't playing cheesy lists.

This is something I've never quite understood.

Games are made for fun. 40k is a game. Playing WAAC is not fun; nor is crushing the spirit of friendly gaming.

I started Eldar a while ago (before 6th ed and the "OP-ness"). I bought 4 Serpents during that period. Now I feel like a complete donkey-cave if I bring all of them at low point costs, and so play what I find fun to play, and try to build lists based on tactics, and not the power of units.

Playing Tau and Eldar does not mean you win. Using boring spamlists (or alike) does in a WAAC enviroment. Friendly enviroments are a lot more fun to play in; you can base your list on tactics and not bring the best units; instead have an even game and keep your friends.

Last game I played I took both my Tomb Stalker and my Tomb Blades, just for fun (certainly would've been more competitive to switch them out for a Sentry Pylon, D Lord and some more Immortals). Had a 2,000pt game against an Inquisition+IG army, lost both my barges by turn 2 and had one of the closest most intense games I've ever played, ended up landing some decisive blows blows in the late game and won with a rather decisive finish.

My Tomb Stalker, adorable little critter I only ever play when playing lighthearted games and who never once in his glorious career survived long enough to actually assault anything, managed to deepstrike without error on my opponent's second turn thanks to Zandrekh, ate a Land Raider on my very next turn, chomped on a Leman Russ hiding in a ruin the turn after that and then a turn after that went on a killing spree against a 30 guardsmen blob thanks to a lucky 12" assault move (though the ballsy little bastards had some amazing luck on their leadership tests and tarpitted him for two turns before getting swept).

I was so proud of him!

I think I lost over half my army by the end there and we just about went through all the FLGS's craters for all the Explodes! results we rolled (we started early so games that started later had to make do without )...

Best game I've had in ages!

House rule them. Explain everyone that you want to play with Serpents because you like the model, but that you admit it is a broken unit.

Fix it this way: the Serpent Shield can only be used offensively once in the game. It cannot be used offensively on turn 1, and when used offensively the Serpent Shield is lost, both in defense and in offense.

Fixed. It is still a great unit, but you will no longer feel like a donkey-cave. Quite the contrary, you will be someone willing to admit that something working in your favor at the cost of breaking the game is fun for no one.

I have seen these kind of house rules on Heldrakes and the like. It usually works.

WH40K is by far the largest wargame at my colleges wargaming club. We play pretty much just WH40K 2 of every 3 meetings. So its not dying out here, at least.

Just hang in there, try to find another group to play with. If your radius you're willing to look in is a 40 minute drive im sure you can find something.

Its not common in pick up games at my local FLGS, though my local GW is quite popular. Tournaments are still very popular for the former though.

Sounds incredibly fun!

As a fellow Necron player, I must say that while the Stalker generally is rather uneffective, it's so much fun (plus I love the model )

1. Go to FLGS on a 40K game night.
2. Announce to no one in particular "I have over 10,000 points of Space Marines".
3. Sit back and watch as some 30-ish Neckbeard who still lives with his parents not only disputes your claim, but goes on to describe his 30,000 points of Blood Angels and how he has been playing since Rogue Trader days... And yet you will have never seen him either play 40K or that army.
4. From here, you have several options. Continue the conversation, or just end it. Either way, I guarantee you will waste 1+ hour of your life talking to this guy. Have fun!

Right when Escalation came out a bunch of people at my FLGS apparently ordered Revenants/Warhounds from a Chinese site. I am dreading when they finally get built and they all start using them, especially since the store seems insistent on not banning anything at their tournaments.
