I guess I can see Irons as Alfred. Still a big 'no' to Eisenberg.

Actually, I was in the camp of "let's see what Ulrik Von Lichtenschtein is made of". And he pulled it off with flying colors. Eisenberg? Good actor. But not for the role of the biggest, baldest egotist this side of Krypton. He's all heart, not all megalomaniacal.
Too bad Robert Carlyle is too busy playing about 10+ different versions of Rumpelstiltskin on ABC's Once Upon a Time series...
Anyone remember how evil Reynard was in 'The World is not Enough?'
At the very least he'd be a more menacing and much more dangerous Lex than the 20-something throwing a tantrum we're now likely to see.

On the one hand, Heath Ledger surprised the hell out of me as the Joker... on the other hand, I still have a very hard time envisioning Eisenberg as Lex Luthor and Ben Affleck as Batman. But we'll see.

I have zero faith in the film. Batman is older (Affleck is what, 40 something?), Superman is in his older 20s and Lex is an angsty teenager? Despite the fact that they should be around the same age (I can buy Batman looking older as Superman ages slower), the personalities just won't mesh. If Snyder pulls it off, I'll be humbled. A lot. But I also have as much faith in this movie's success as I do in crapping a spitting image of the Mona Lisa into my toilet bowl tomorrow.

I'd pay to see that instead of this film.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

You know Jesse Eisenberg is thirty, right? Like, the exact same age as Henry Cavill?

Yeah, I'm not too sure about Jesse Eisenberg as Luthor. However, when Smallville started, Michael Rosenbaum was around the same age.
What I'd really want for Luthor is for him to have a legitimate grievance with Superman. - I think I've seen a run of comics discussed on the web where he's had that (even one was titled Lex Luthor).
I'm very much in the Superman shouldn't have killed in Man of Steel. Or at least, be really, really, really upset about it, camp, Luthor should be in the more morally grey, than outright insane evil.
For example if you set it around LexCorp rebuilding Metropolis, you can have Lex on the soapbox of saying that it was Kal-el's presence that caused the events of the first film to happen. That he was single handedly responsible for 1000's of peoples deaths.
They key, would be having an actor that can portray that belief with 100% conviction, and get other people to believe it too.
Make Luthor's quest not to take over the world or some other idiotic scheme, but instead to destroy Superman, in his mind, to save the world. He also should, at no point, be 'found out' by the public and most certainly not be jailed and/or killed.
Of course, this would set up a future film, where we get the perfect line...
Where is the cancer cure, Lex?

Scene:
Lex Luther sitting in a dark office in front of a desk, the computer monitor illuminating his face. He starts to type on his keyboard as the camera moves around the office until it is positioned behind him and we can see the monitor. Luther is typing a message on LexCorp's Facebook page:
Kal-el's pressence has brought suffering to the people of metropolis. The fight between these aliens caused destruction to our city and it caused the death of thousands of our citizens. As long as Superman is allowed to live on our planet none of us will ever be safe.
Share if you no longer want humanity to be in danger because of an alien living among us.
Luther hits the "enter" key and leans back in his chair, picking up a glass of scotch. He takes a sip of his drink and sees a red 1 on the top of the screen.
Notification:
Joe Smith has shared your post
Luther takes another sip and cracks a smile.
"Your move Superman...."
Suddenly the casting seems genius...

Just maybe this Lex isn't a growling, scenery-chewing type villain. The New 52 seems to have re-emphasized Lex's intellectual brilliance and science background, and how it makes him the most dangerous guy around.
The whole Bryan Cranston thing seemed like typical unimaginative fan casting to me. If his head hadn't been shaved, I doubt fans would have thought of him for the role.

Lex Luthor should be a man who will stand against a god. Eisenberg does not make me think of such a man.
Plus, you know, Snyder sucks.

Irons is a brilliant casting choice, IMHO. Eisenberg and Affleck, not so much. I'm still struggling to see how either of them will really fit into their respective roles.
I'm also interested to see how they tackle Batman's suit, after the incredible design we had for Begins/TDK.

I think Eisenberg could work. Perhaps they are setting him up as sort sort of child prodigy who already controls a massive empire by his mid 20's.
Irons is great choice for Alfred.

This film sounds like it has way too much stacked up against it. DC superheros, with the exception of Batman, don't seem to make a good transition to film. This appears its going for par.

To me Jeremy Irons will always be the wizened old tutor, or the battle-hardened general or king in medieval and fantasy films. It's going to be hard for me to picture him as anything less.
Pretty much this... Jeremy Irons is either a medieval character, or he's getting tons of Gold Bullion from underneath NYC buildings, only to be blown up by a hungover cop. Michael Caine pulls off the wizened butler who has a less than sterling background (even if we never hear much about it on screen) better than anyone I've seen thus far.

It doesn't help that Superman and Green Lantern suffer from the arbitrariness of their powers. A good action movie is like a good mystery - the result should be predictable in hindsight. A bad action movie has the bad guy beat up the good guy until the good guy arbitrarily gains the upper hand and curbstomps him.
A good example from X-Men 2:
A bad example from Superman Returns:

It also doesn't help that they try to turn every single DC superhero movie into Batman.
DC/Warner Brothers should make a Kingdom Come movie. That would be amazing.
