Just wondering if it is even worth the time to ebay or just release them to the wild to become toilet paper. Have a load of old GW stuff and hoping this is the right place to ask.

I'd keep them, if you've got the space. Even if you never use them again for play, they can still serve as reference for paint schemes, tracking fluff (I actually see this come up quite a bit in answer to fluff questions) and rule changes, or a simple dose of nostalgia.

If you really don't want them, sell or donate them before scrapping them, outright. Someone would likely want them for the aforementioned purposes.

I've got books going back to 40k 3rd and I love them. They are fantastic reference. Occasionally they settle arguments, like the guy who said "Steel Legion was black originally" and I whipped out the book with their first appearance and said "WRONG."

It's spelled "cavalry." NOT "calvary."

I'm sure some people may collect them. Although all the old tyranid ones I keep seeing on ebay never get sold. Although that might be due to the fact that the new one is more sort after currently.

I've only had one codex updated (5th-6th C:SM) but there's no way Id chuck the old one out. There's a ton of cool fluff, gallery models that don't show up in the new one, and they're just generally cool to have. Even if they are worthless in terms of monetary value, there is still a lot you can get out of them.

For CSM painting the cleaved, there are better/more pictures of examples on them in the older codex's. I do like collecting the older cedex's of all armies, not jsut ones i play. Its pretty cool to see stories from different points of view. Or better yet, actually having fluff in the old sisters codex and witch hunters, compared to the WD release and the new Ecodex

I must admit, I rarely go back and look.
But when I do, it is for inspiration or flavor for a given army.

I play Black Templar and find I dust off the Armageddon initial codex or the 2nd edition Chaos Codex for my other army.

All the old rules, WD and codex's flesh out more of the details; text with pictures.

It gives a taste of the times of when people were excited about the game and you remember why you started playing.

I love hanging onto them purely for inspiration if you're painting up an army. Fluff doesn't all get repeated from codex to codex, and some stories are quite fun to give a character to your generic lord HQ.

I like hanging onto them too. Especially the old Chaos Codex (1996, which had a whopping 143 pages) as well as the Space Wolf Codex (1994) spanning 88 pages and had actual fluff. The RT era book Freebooterz is also always nice to read through.

So yeah, I would either give them away or try and sell them if you really don't want them anymore.

I keep all my old ones, for many of the reasons listed above. Good fluff, pictures, and reference material for rules/history arguments. Of course I’m a packrat, so might just be making excuses to justify my instinctive behavior. But it is nice when someone has an obscure question to hit the shelf and get the answer. But I’m a living ancestor from the RT days, and take my duties as a repository of knowledge seriously.

If you really want to keep them just scan them and ditch the space wasting copies. I've found it's much more a case of nostalgia than any logical use for the books that keeps them around.

Such as the rationale that the old books are somehow more interesting than the new ones. 3rd ed books were generally pretty boring until the later half of the edition and a lot of 4th ed books are pretty much the same as the ones now.. hard to make a case for a lot of those books. (For instance, Blood Angels really didn't a book with fluff until 5th edition)

It's just a case of rose tinted glasses for the past imo, just scan and chuck 'em as in order to do "old school" games you will need to also use the old editions since many rules don't make sense.

I've saved all my old Codicies, but the only ones I go back to are the 2nd edition versions because the miniatures, artwork and fluff is so different (in some cases).

If you've got the space save them. If not, there's really no shame in selling them off, though you probably won't get much.

There's usually a ton of cool artwork in the old codexes and books too.

For example, I bought the old cityfight book purely for the terrain and painting guidelines, as well as all the gritty artwork.

I've been planning on buying the old IG and Ork codexes for their painting guides and artwork as well. I know the old Ork codexes have a lot of lore in them that isn't in the new one.

Sometimes I open up the old 4th edition book and just imagine how it would play in current 6th edition... Orks do it, why not us? Just imagine... Dakkafexs so much cheaper. Insane cheap durability upgrades. Flyrants are cheap beyond any level. Buy tons of cheap powers on Flyrants to exchange on Biomancy... Oh my. 4th Nids, in todays edition, would break Taudar.

Particularly the 4th Ed BRB (oh man that section at the back is legendary with all those tutorials and examples) and the 4th Ed IG Codexes are inspiring for me.

So inspiring, that I'm still gutted that it took me the better part of 2-3 years to realize the Guardsman head with large combat goggles pressed against the helmet (not covering the eyes) was from the old Sentinel kit, as I've always wanted to build some themed combat engineers with the heads. The pictures in the 4th Ed BRB with them have never escaped me.

I say keep them if you can. Wish I still had all the old books I used to from 2nd & 3rd edition. So much good stuff in them.

If you're set on getting rid then by all means sell, but be sure that's what you want to do first.

I was at a games auction. A few months back and they had a lot of old 40k rule books and different codexes and stuff, probably close to 20 books. They started the bidding at $8 and got exactly 0 bids and put them all away. So if you are holding them for any kind of resale vale, don't bother. If you are keeping them cause you like them go for it.
