(like say, charging it with a full squad of lychguard perhaps?)
Lychguard are great against
MCs and vehicles if you leave them with their warscythes. Their hyperphase swords are only power weapons, so it's Strength 5 AP3.
But honestly, Lychguard are slow moving, they're initiative 2 and they only have 2 attacks + 1 for charging (you're not going to get to charge an
MC though).
How much do you think you'll lose trying to kill a T6 or T7
MC with hyperphase swords on lychguard?
20 attacks, 4+ to hits.
10 hit
S5 vs T6/7 = 5+/6+ to wound
2 or 3 wounds.
2+ saves? invulnerables? Feel no pain? You'll maybe cause 2 wounds a lucky streak.
How much do you think you'll lose trying to march them across the table with warscythes and T5 with 3+ saves?
The answer is, more than you'll lose from the death ray.
When I field this list, I usually also field a royal court disco inferno with vangard obyron in it and Nemessor Zhandrek in the lychguard squad.
So, when the nightscythe comes in with the doomscythe, they charge for the meanest looking thing on the field and deploy 6" from it. Then Obyron will
DS the RCDI to Zhandrek's location without scattering due to Ghost Walk mantle.
And the death ray will kill the
MC or vehicle that I wanted to kill.
After that, I'll generally give
FC to the lychguard squad and proceed to assault units for the remainder of the game with both units.
