As it says on the tin: who makes the Ork's food? Surely if they are out fighting, when would they have the time? And also, how do they make it a PIE?!

Actually, the answer to this one isn't quite as funny as you think.

Gretchin do these things. Grots are the genetically designed slave labour force of the Orks.

Back in 2nd edition, Orks had a dedicated caste of cooks (and alcohol makers) called brewboyz. It's no longer mentioned in the current codex but hasn't been retconned away either, so I guess it remains valid

Yep, they're mentioned in Gorkamorka's Uvver Book - Brewhouses & Slop Shops.

The Brewboyz make & sell Fungus Beer & Liquors by the barrel load, while Sloppers make things like Squig Pies & Fungus Stew, with the Sloppers' Yoofs running around the Mektown Squig market looking for the best ingredients so the Sloppers can make the most appealing grub. (It may also turn out to be the most dangerous grub, but Orks like taking risks with their food).

Given the genetic encoding of knowledge that Orks have which gives rise to Meks & Doks, it's not a big leap to imagine there'd be some Orks able to specialise like that in the current fluff, and still being tough fighters when needed.

There used to be Brewboyz like they said, but I'm sure thieved been retconned. So i suppose the Gretchin would do it, and be occasionally thrown into the pot to add flavour.

Wouldn't be quite so sure. 4th ed just says Grots are involved in food prep, and have black market businesses on the side selling fungus beer/brew and selling roasted squigs on sticks. It doesn't directly rule out the presence of Brewboyz or Sloppers as such and indeed the book goes on to mention there are lots of different types of oddboyz in Ork society, not just the most important ones like Doks & Meks.

Imo, it's one of those 'you can read it either way' ones and as it adds a bit more flavour, I'll choose to believe they're still around, just not important for games of 40k.

Perhaps the grots do the cooking and whatnot, under supervision of Brewboys/Slopboys - a bit like how a runtherd bosses them around - Jabs them with a giant fork to "encourage" them, maybe?

I'm actually liking the part about the oddboy Ork cooks and brewers. It follows the way a Runtherd works just fine, and makes good sense in Ork society.
Sure the Grots do the actual cooking, but somebody that knows something about cooking needs to boss them around.

Ork Piemakaz. The greatest chefs in the WAAAGH!. Represented on the tabletop as per Ork Boyz, but instead of actual weapons they throw pies at the enemy, which are 12" range and Assault 1, but they can't actually hurt anyone. They do have Blind and Pinning, though, since they do cause quite a mess and gunk up optics.

I may be misremembering, but I seem to recall that brewboyz not only manufactured the fungus beer but also the fuel. Which was the same thing, actually.

That's a new one on me, but I guess it could work, in a biofuel sort of way.

Wouldn't be the only ones. Chimeras run on cooking oil (well, Chimeras run on anything you can shove down the fuel pipe, but...)
