I think in hindsight that would have ultimately been way more hilarious :p
Was FAQ'ed wasn't it? They won't shoot non-IG models anymore.
Yeah just look it up and you are correct. Will only kill IG units. I remember seeing this happen before with a commissar killing a SW Rune Priest one time at a game I was watching. Wish they kept it as is before the FAQ. Forges a much superior narrative.

The thing about the Thudd gun list is it screams "sucking the fun out". This was a tournament with lots of deathstars and cheese, but that list just smells worse than any of them. And the more I hear about his reasons for taking it and his behavior after doesn't paint a pretty picture of his character either.

Any tourney game that ends because of time is a tainted win at best. In 7th there are to many ways to stall and make sure the game ends when you want it to. I don't understand why tourneys don't change near the end and make sure the last two rounds finish naturally and not because of time. This doesn't need to happen for anyone except the games still in the hunt for first.

Great game #6! Congrats on getting this far. I'm jealous that I couldn't be there with you guys on Day #3, but I still had a blast at the tournament and also with the Doubles tournament. And I didn't exactly walk away empty-handed.

HAHA thanks man, I hear you about Khymerae being expensive, I'm 28 and they're still far too expensive BeastStar is a ton of fun, especially the way I run it because it's not exactly how I would traditionally define a "Death Star" but rather as you phased it, a "mini-star". If the Beasts die, I still have a chance to win the game. While they're a really fun unit, I only spend somewhere around 500 points on the unit itself, rather than the 800-900 others spend on theirs.
I'd love to play against Jy2's Necrons - he keeps telling me he wanted to play me, and I was fine with that, though I generally prefer to play against top players near the final rounds of the tournament, rather than immediately. I think I have the tools to beat him, though he obviously thinks the same about me So yes, I'd love to play him sometime, and when I eventually do, we'll make an epic battle report
This would be my Pre-game thoughts if I were to go up against Adam's Beaststar.
Pre-Game Analysis
I've played against the Beaststar once in 6th Ed. (with the new Eldar codex) with my Necrons:
I've also played against them numerous times back in Pre-Newdar era. I've never really had a problem with them back then. The game against Douglas was much more difficult because he wouldn't fail his saves, but I have confidence that my Necrons can take on the Beaststar DE. Why?
1. I'm experienced enough to know to ignore the beaststar for the most part and to go after his supporting units instead. That's how you play and beat deathstar builds....by going after the support units.
2. Night scythes are experts at picking apart those jetbike troops. None in all my games have survived their wrath.
3. Wraithknights hate Mindshackles. I have killed every single WK I have gone up against with my necrons.
4. Wraiths will make a mockery out of the beastpacks, doubling out even the 5W guys. Re-rollable 4+ is not nearly as bad as the re-rollable 2+/4+ of the seer council.
5. Even with dual-farseers, Fortune is not a guaranteed. If my opponent gets Fortune, it will be a tough battle for me. If not, he's got a big hill to climb.
6. The lack of Anti-air firepower in his army. The game is won by my troops in flyers, not by my wraiths on the ground (though they cannot be ignored also).
7. My mobility is just as good, maybe arguably even more superior to that of my opponent.
8. I've got no soft targets on the ground. Even if the beastpack Hit-&-Runs out of combat, there will be no target for them to go after besides my wraiths or annihilation barges, either of which I don't really care if he charges. And if he charges 1 unit of wraiths, I've got 2 more waiting to counter-assault.
9. I have a lot more experience playing against beaststar builds than I do playing against, say, White Scars. They won't catch me unprepared for their tricks.
10. His army is dependent on his psychic powers. Get the right ones and it'll be a tough, tough game for me. But there's just as good of a chance for him not to get the right ones. I usually go into these games prepared to face a Fortuned beaststar, but if he doesn't get it, then that's a bonus for me!

Thanks Jim, it was a pretty tense game! Congrats on your result in the Team Tournament!
Haha, glad you feel so confident against me, I don't blame you!
Our game would be interesting, especially if I got Fortune. Here's the game plan I'd have against you, though it would really depend on the mission, deployment, terrain density/type, and especially on who got first turn. This is therefore more generalized, and honestly might not be what I'd plan at all, depending on other factors:
Jy2 is an experienced tournament player. More than that, he's an experienced tournament player who wins the vast majority of his games. He has a few different armies, but the one he knows the best are his Necrons. This would not be an easy fight for me, though hopefully I could surprise him and at least give him a close game.
How to kill so many Wraiths? There are a ton of them there, and two of the squads have a D-Lord in front to soak up wounds. Further, his flyers are going to be difficult to remove, though I do have a few tricks to mess with them if need be.
My psychic powers are almost certainly going to be useful in this matchup. While there is a reasonable chance that I will not get Fortune or Doom (more likely that I get Fortune but not Doom, as I would stop rolling on Fate as soon as I got Fortune), there is almost no chance that I would fail to get at least one of those powers. Even if I fail to get Doom before Fortune, I would then roll on the Divination table to try and get Forewarning or Misfortune. One Doom/Misfortune would be good enough for me, and what I would base my strategy on.
Thing is, I have enough long-range firepower to really mess with the Wraiths, regardless of first or second turn. My army would (on average) remove 3 or 4 wraiths at long range, and would target the squad with no D-lord in it. Doom/Misfortune would go on one of the D-lord squads the turn I could charge in with the Beasts, then the Beasts would wade in, potentially getting a multi-assault on both Wraith units to tie them up. If only one unit, I'd challenge his D-Lord with an inconsequential Master, and tank wounds on one of my Jetseers. There would actually be a reasonable (not very likely) chance of killing all the Wraiths and just running the D-Lord down
Doomed or Misfortuned Wraiths would almost certainly all die within the next two combat phases (Prescience on the Beasts for re-rolls to hit). Next turn, the Beasts can try to kill off the other squad, after hit & run and a ridiculous volley from the Guardians.
Meanwhile, Warp Spiders can deep strike if I'm going 2nd, and with Guide or Prescience try to down a Nightscythe. They actually have a great chance to do just that.
Depending on what's going on the Wraithknight would either go mess with the A-Barges or tie up a Wraith squad for one turn of combat. I wouldn't expect him to live - he never lives anyways. Just messes with people's psyches.
Really the key to this match would be the Guardians - if I can protect the Guardians from Wraiths, the Beasts can slowly be whittled down while hit & running. The magic of "releasing" a mostly full squad of Wraiths in front of my full 20-man Guardians, then casting Doom or Misfortune on them and Prescience/Guide on the Guardians gives me shivers just to think about!
While Jy2's firepower IS a threat, my army is also more resilient than he likely gives me credit for - it will take his firepower a long time to kill all of my relevant support units. In fact, unless the Wraiths deal with my Beasts in the first couple turns, I don't think Jy2 would be able to get rid of all my support elements/troops.
As to his claim of his army being possibly "far more mobile" than my army - I kind of disagree, as I think my army is actually pretty quick/reactive. The truth is - I think we both have very quick armies. Most armies in this edition kind of rely on extreme mobility, and it's no surprise that most of the top armies at this event were extremely quick or had reserve shenanigans.
Jy2 has experience against SOME lists using Beasts or other deathstars, and has a sterling record against them. That doesn't mean he has experience against Beasts played the way I play them though. That isn't meant to be/sound cocky - I don't have any illusions that I'm some sort of trancendant great player. However, my playstyle does tend to mess with other top players, for whatever reason. I might be able to at least escape being tabled.

Tainted win at best? What is it at worst?
I don't enjoy it when a game has to end by time, though I will say that many of my opponents moved slower than I did. Also not sure what games would have ended differently than these did if we had played more turns though.

If I'm totally honest, they do kind of confirm that I would not have a lot of fun playing some of these proving it's broken and should've won types.
Hey thanks! My experience has been that most opponents are what make an army fun/unfun to play against. There are obviously some exceptions, but I'm also more tolerant of ridiculous lists haha!

It was certainly not that fun to play against - kind of why I don't play as Tau. Not a condemnation on people who play Tau, mind you! I've just observed that most people don't like playing against an army that does what they do. I honestly don't think it's even the new awesome book being overpowered - people hated playing against them even with their old awful book.
Same idea for this list I think

Haha....well said. And so modest as well.
No doubt the beastpack will keep my wraiths occupied for almost the entire game. Yeah, it's going to be hard to try to kill your support units. I've only got shooting to do so. I don't think I'll be able to rely on assault.
As for the spiders, yeah, I've done that a few times to my opponents as well when I run them. Spiders + Prescience is actually very respectable AA. I will have to take care of them.
However, the key to beating my wraiths are the psychic powers. There is 1 particular power that scares me the most. As a matter of fact, you could say that it Terrifies me.
I'm not sure if your beast pack is big enough to do this Xareth, but the all Khymarae version that I've been running (just won my own, smaller GT, with them, hehe) is actually big enough to completely surround my scoring/shooting units out to the 24 inch mark.
Which means Night Scythes and ABs cannot shoot them for two turns (the turn the Wraiths assault and force my Beasts to pile out of their bubble). At that point my Bikes can come into reserve behind the Night Scythes. It's a pretty dirty trick versus Crons. JY2 is good enough to counter that trick, I'm sure, but it's dirty none the less.

This is the reason why I only use Zocchi precision dice. Everything is usually relatively statistical with them.
I always get very suspicious when people make saves like that.... I once knew a Tau player who had color coded dice that he used for different things. He was such an obvious cheater. I also knew another Tau player (coincidence?) who liked to use the vehicle damage dice because they "rolled better."
I'm not calling anybody a cheater it just gets suspicious when somebody rolls ridiculously well.

Lol I guess that's what happens when you play a dice game.
A great quote from somebody I knew who was a 40K player since its inception (and who was also a USMC Sergeant Major and former Drill Instructor) after I invited him to a tournament:
"I will never play 40K in a tournament, because if I'm rolling 1s and he's rolling 6s there's nothing I can do."

1. He was also rolling well with his saves in our game.
2. We both had pivotal assault phases that determined the course of the game. His wiping out of my wraithstar early was a punch to the gut.
3. I also felt that I could have and should have beaten his bikers.
4. He also beat my ass 10-1.
5. I also didn't really want to play against his army because I've already played against White Scars earlier on.
6. Maybe we'll get rematches against his army at Adepticon.
See you at Adepticon! Hopefully, we get to play then.
HA, I actually noticed that when I read your report, but didn't want to say anything before I put my own report up. I think we were both surprised by the potency of White Scars - I didn't really respect them too much before this tournament, thinking they were a little gimmicky. Turns out they're the real deal, at least in the hands of a good player!
Adepticon will be fun, hope we can both make the top 16! Gonna be Deathstar Central there, I'm trying to tweak my list to deal with them.

I've added a 34pt servo skull caddy inquisitor into my bike army for adepticon for that exact reason. I'd prefer some crazy deathstar not to be able to jus be in my face turn 1 100% of the time ;p
Yeah, good call on the skull caddy! I've been trying to figure out if I can fit in Coteaz + some PlasCan Servitors, but not sure it's worth 200 points in the context of my list. 34 points seems like a good purchase though to defend against that. I will need to give it some thought...

Heh, it's true - bad luck is just a part of this game. I honestly think that despite the bad luck, if I had played better (i.e. knew all the rules that he did, lol) I would have been able to beat him or at least make it a close game, in spite of the luck differential. Looking back, lots of things I could have done better that I didn't. Just gotta keep learning I suppose
Thats no moon, thats a... no, wait... thats a moon.
I have a buddy that runs the coteaz/plaservitors and unless he rolls ignore cover I've never felt like they perform. Yes they are a pretty useful squad for the benefits that coteaz gives you+some ap2. But they really are list/power dependant. His list is max shooting marines with a chapter master+bike squad assault protector so they fit pretty well. But they're slow and kind of expensive unless you roll your good powers.
I have 2 lists I'm bringing and I'll decide that week what I wanna play ;p. maybe I'll be able to get a pick up game against someone Wednesday and decide that way ;p it's a pretty rounded biker list or beastpack of cheese lol. I've been play testing the beastpack and idk it's sweet but maybe I'm not familiar enough with it to really maximize it's potential haha as I got my butt whooped on by centurionstar despite narrowly winning in my last game.

Ha nice man! I used to run Coteaz +Plascan Servitors with my GKs, and they did some work most games. Kind of easy to kill a unit that static though - my latest attempts at list building has been an effort to make dynamic, movable pieces. I really don't think a unit like that fits the ticket
BeastStar is a fun unit because it's more of a "mini-star" than the traditional huge expensive "Death Star". They don't really delete units the way other stars do. They're just more of a harassment unit than killy. Love having units opponents HAVE to pay attention to or lose
Naw wrote:I once rolled 17 3+ saves against Tau to secure a draw. Funny thing when you throw dice, anything can happen.
About this game, it looked like he won the game because of lucky dice rolls. But I don't think that was the case.
Heh, I never said it was bad luck that lost it for me - he outplayed me and I lost. Dice didn't save me, which is always a possibility, but the loss was on me, not the dice.
Hope that was clear enough.

That's basically my list building technique as well. Ever since I played wraithwing I've been in love with armies that just move. My bikes are by no means overpowering but with their mobility and flexibility I'm able to push advantages where I need to and apply pressure anywhere I want almost at will. That was also what drew me too beastpack. Basically I haven't had an army I the last 2 years that has anything in it that moves less than 12" a turn except TFC in my biker army.

I think this is a really good insight I play daemons (not fmc or screamerstar) and I have found my armies full of flesh hounds screamers fiends and seekers...units with nonlinear deployment options and a ton of speed to put the pressure on
