okay, i am just going to throw this in here.
i know of several people who have built 40k sized spacecraft (one 40k sized ork spaceship appeared on games day somewhere, know that one definitely).
but.
has anyone ever had the idea of scratchbuilding a 40k sized battleship? i mean, not spacecraft, but yamato style sea battleship?
if yes, tell me about it! i want to hear about it/see it!
and now, tell me what you think of the idea of a 40k USS Iowa style Imperial Battleship, roughly 3 metres (about ten feet) long, battling with ork submarines, patrol boats and fliers.
because two friends and i are planning exactly that....
too insane? or shall i do it? could start this summer.....

well, orkimedes did know how to build ork submarines ( cf. battle for armageddon, battle for hive helsreach!), and there even are rules for them in 1st ed apoc. together with the fliers and the fact those subs can be built out of plastic bottles, i think its going to be a fair fight

we plan to adhere to the fluff more than you think. it all will be a larger thing, we will reenact the entire ork landing on hive helsreach in the third battle for armageddon, with ork subs and landing craft landing ork troops, and a beachhead defended by Steel Legion and PDF forces.
yes, you heard it.

Here is my SM Ship project;
http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/577234.page
.
Will be sectional;
Turrets and Bridge will be mounted on a 12" x 12" flat deck bases, so they can be removed and used as separate pieces of terrain.
The interior rectangle decks will be removable and will line up in different patterns; T, S, L, etc...
The sides; engines, and gun batteries will be removeable to be used as walls...
.
Will also fit on a standard 4' x 6' game table.
.
Here is a cool link, but the scale is 1/285 (tiny) http://store.gcmshop.com/c/132/ships.
.
You are not insane, just figure out if you want it to look BFG or not, I say not... Good Luck!

are you really talking about something being OBSOLETE in the warhammer 40k universe? a universe in which the main battle tank of the humans is a friggin tractor with guns and armour strapped to it, where the spaceships are built as 5km CATHEDRALS, where drowning and enemy in troops instead of nuking from orbit is considered a viable tactic, where "new" technology (means "dug up after 8,000 years of missing") needs roughly 250-300 years before being sanctioned and allowed to use, where just starting up an engine needs a 6-hour religious ritual?
okay, sorry, back to the point:
well, you might think that it wouldn't be useful, but as it is even stated in the fluff that armageddon had a fleet, and the "helsreach naval defense fleet" is particularly mentioned, i think my idea of a 40k navy battleship is still very viable

wow, haven't come across the floating ship of Klaus before... some nice work, and gave me some inspiration, thanks for the link, Ruglud!
one key difference between the ships of waz and Klaus compared to mine is: theirs are just for the modeling and showcasing, while mine is actually really intended for gameplay!
hence, it will be a waterlined model (unlike waz's, which has a complete underbelly and has a display stand, Klaus's does not count here as its a skimmer anyways ).

Yes, I read that, I was just showing you my thoughts and ideas, not hard to add a waterline hull to my Ship (just remove the rear sides that are sticking out).
.
I would make it sectional, if you want to game on it, or move it.
.
I did put a link to a SEA ship kit in 1/285.
.
I was on the Iowa in the late 1980's, before they decommissioned it, very cool.
.
Here are some awesome examples in 1/72, so you can see size realism;

.
Here is a 1/48 scale ( 40K is close to this), it is a 30 foot by 6 foot diorama, (about the same size as a Battleship)
.
One builder had to knock down a wall in his house to move his carrier to a museum.

-sections: yup, i definitely will build it in sections, not sure yet in how many though (i am in the detail plannig phase, currently reworking a rough sketch i made)
-link: umm... well, your link did not work, so i could not know
-scale: well, i will not go by scale, i will just take the gun layout of the Iowa class, swap the weapons for 40k counterparts, and see how long the ship will be with these.
