Its been getting suprisingly good (well average) reviews. I will be waiting for its inevitable -75% sale on Steam before I get it though, assuming that I get it at all.

*grumblegrumble*gaming history*grumblegrumble*kids these days*grumblegrumblegrumble*... sorry. I'll actually give a useful and somewhat non-biased reply.

Ok, so Thief the original came out back in the late 90s and was pretty much the first "stealth game" ever made. Certainly the first such game to be in the first person all the time. The emphasis was on being sneaky and exploring the environment. If everything went right you should get through the missions without anybody ever knowing you where there, and combat of any kind was pretty much the worst possible option.

Spiritual successors of this game were Splinter Cell, Hitman, and (yes) Assassin's creed, however all of these put a lot more emphasis on combat. I guess first person Splinter Cell in low fantasy steampunk land would be the best way to describe this game.

Judging from the trailer I think they kept the core concept pretty much the same. Of course the original was sometimes frustrating and buggy as hell (as groundbreaking titles pretty much always are)...so if they kept that the same then things could end badly.

I watched someone stream it for 4 hours last night. It looked pretty fun and was very good looking. It unfortunately seems to have boiled down to Dishonored without all the magical shizz-waz mixed in. That said it still looked quite fun to play.

YES! I've been waiting for a new Thief title since Deadly Shadows for the XBox.

Dishonoured was an excellent spiritual successor, but it was over too soon and there isn't a lot of replay. Good ending, Bad ending, now what?

Oh man, Thief: The Dark Project and especially The Metal Age were my favorite games in high school, games I will remember fondly always. There has been nothing I've played quite like them, they were unique gems of the late 90s. Now I've played Hitman, Assassins creed and Splinter Cell, but while great games, none had the same sense of absolute need for stealth that thief had - hell, even being seen could result in anything from instant death to mere loss of master-thief level, while the more modern stealth games you can generally just shoot/fight you way out if you want. Any more than one guard was basically death, unless you had a blind-bomb or a quick exit nearby.

They were challenging, but well thought out levels, wonderful feel and plot-line, and.. I dunno, just suited my style of gaming perfectly. The third one (deadly shadows) was still fun, but not quite as good as the originals, partly because it was the first wave of cross-platform games (PC/Console), and it wasn't the only franchise to suffer during the cross over.

I'll take a look at the new one, I'm hopeful, but the reviews make it sound like the plot is a bit poor, and it has more than a few bugs... we'll see.

Awww poo. I loved his Garret voice in the originals. It had a real gritty/grizzled tone, that set the feel for the rest of the game.

Oh it's nice to see a Thief topic here. Thief is pretty good I have to say, but sadly it seems to be the victim of some of the most unwarranted vitriol and poor argumentation I've seen in a long time. I'm not sure if it's nostalgia fueled rage or just a lack of critical thinking but I've seen some asinine reviews for this game my favorite being that Garret, the thief of Thief...steals too much.

It's likes Diablo 3 and Dragon Age 2 all over again: great entries in their respective series but victim to some senseless internet rage; at least with those 2 games reviewers gave credit where credit was due. Alas with Thief they have not been as charitable which I don't think is fair.

Long story short yes it's fun, certainly not perfect but if you like stealth go for it.

It's strong nostalgia. I mean it's not like what happened to Dungeon Keeper when EA brought it back from it's grave as a mobile game.

Diablo 3 however had plenty of other issues that actually marred it for quite sometime, it was less senseless and actually an issue in multiple cases.

Yeah Asimo, surely there are some better examples than diablo 3 and DAII XD EDIT: And for the silly critique department, I've read a bunch of 'professional' reviews praising the ability to change the difficulty. Like thats some new feature no ones seen before XD lolwut?

All the reviews I've read make me trebedatious to buy. It sounds like they're really riding Dishonored and I liked that game okay, but not that much.

Ok I admit the Diablo and Dragon Age comments were a bit of a bait so fie on me for that. But I do think they're the best entries in their respective series so come at me bro! (in maybe a different topic)

As for Thief it's definitely a try before you buy. Stealth has always been niche and with games like Human Revolution, Hitman, Assassin's Creed, Dishonoured, and so on I think people have a different expectation for what stealth is and thus Thief has become a niche within a niche. Thief actually feels a lot like its predecessors so if you liked the old methodical original Thief games I think this is a good fit. However if you're expecting the Deus Ex or Dishonoured mantra of "I can tackle this anyway way I want" you may want to stay away.

You're not a fighter, a ninja, or an assassin just a thief and you have to play it slow here...which I like! I will say Thief's greatest sin so far is the sound, it's a bit wonky. It's especially a shame since the first Thief games had such a great sense of sound and how it moves through space that even modern games rarely get right.

Anyway I guess I'm just bummed out that in gaming things like COD and GTA get 9's and 10's, and Titanfall is seen as the second coming and yet poor Thief gets so much flak.

Honestly it's hard to say which is worse Skyrim online or Thiaf.

-poor level design (random guard dogs on random rooftop)
-unlock stealth (yes you can unlock a perk called "stealth" on lvl 2, WTF?)
-batman vision
-puzzles that can only be solved via batman vision
-dark shadows are not dark.
-no rope arrows

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

-I can give you level design in some instances sure that's a legitimate complaint, I however don't think it's that bad
-I'm not sure what you mean by unlock stealth
-That can be turned off
-You don't need focus for puzzles if you look closely at you surroundings
-I would simply have to disagree the lighting seems pretty reasonable
-There are rope arrows

Also by Skyrim Online do you mean The Elder Scrolls Online or Skyrim itself?

-1:30 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3b1k0hu2t0
-http://www.ign.com/wikis/thief/Focus_Upgrades unlock stealth that is the stupidest thing I've seen all year. "Master thief" I wonder what is an average thief? Can steal an apple if no guards or civilians are within 10 mile radius?
-Mission where you goto keeper's abandoned library, I have this gizmo which you can use to get a treasure. This gizmo: http://media.insidegamer.nl/dump/1362496899.jpg You need to match the symbols which locate in near by walls. You can't see the symbols without batman vision and you can't even try use the gizmo without first seeing the symbols with batman vision.

-Contextual arrows are not rope arrows

Teso. Skyrim is bad too.

I have a feeling this is going to be an endless back and forth but I'll respond at least one more time for courtesy's sake

-I'm not sure what you want me to see, it's a trailer for the game alright. Some explanation would help.
-Haven't been up to that specific part so I'll take your word for it, and that does seem like a bad decision then
-That picture doesn't really help and I still don't know what point you're trying to make. If you mean it's too bright/dark perhaps check your gamma settings? Seems fine to me but then again this sort of issue can also heavily rely on your computer's specs so maybe it's an issue you're having, luckily it's fine for me.
-The rope arrows were contextual in the old Thief games too, you could only use them on certain surfaces, that's nothing new. And even then it doesn't really make a difference if you could shoot them willy-nilly since you only need them near ledges anyway, seems like an empty loss (if it really were one since in truth the originals were limited in this regard as well)

TESO sadly doesn't look so hot but I haven't played it not that it's relevant to the discussion. As for Skyrim that's a rather polemical stance to take but that's neither here nor there.

-There are guard dogs on a roof. Why? It makes no sense. Do you see dogs in ass greed's roofs?
-It's not an issue with gamma, brightness or settings. The devs said that they wanted the player be able to see in the dark. Problem with this that it is a slowed idea. Sure now the player can see in "pitch black" but it also makes harder to distinguish what is pitch black and what is not. This issue becomes even worse when you start fiddling with difficulty setting as that makes guards see better in the dark. In spliter cell 1 you easily tell are you perfectely hidden or not.
-This is the main hub area of the game. There 2 places where you use "rope arrows": http://i.imgur.com/eTk2LfQ.jpg . There is more rope arrow usage in the thief 1 demo than there is in the entire game of thiaf.

Why does it "not make sense" for guard dogs to be on a roof? Is the roof all by its lonesome, a separate piece of structure with no way up in the form of stairs?

Guard dogs on a roof makes perfect sense. Dogs can climb stairs. And who cares about what Assassin's Creed does?

-It's not an issue with gamma, brightness or settings. The devs said that they wanted the player be able to see in the dark. Problem with this that it is a slowed idea. First of all? If you cannot phrase your issues without referring to something as "slowed", don't speak. Dakka is a family friendly forum and some members do have mentally handicapped children, parents, or siblings.
Second of all? It's a fine idea. Just because you have difficulty distinguishing what is pitch black and what is not(hint: when you have the "shroud" around your view, then you're hidden in pitch black) does not mean that the developers did poorly or any other nonsense. It means you might have to adjust your monitor/TV to compensate.

-This is the main hub area of the game. There 2 places where you use "rope arrows": http://i.imgur.com/eTk2LfQ.jpg . There is more rope arrow usage in the thief 1 demo than there is in the entire game of thiaf.

So the fact that the "main hub area of the game" only has 2 places for rope arrows means that there are no other uses for them in any of the side missions or story missions?

Its okay. Thats all I can say. Its not fantastic, Nor game of the year material its just a revisit to the series and is quite enjoyable, it is not as good as the original though, because that is the hardest task to beat. They gave you more options, but sadly there isn't enough options. Sound weird? Just play the game and you might see it.
