Hey..

been acquiring some Epic stuff recently to recreate long ago armies... and am trying to do it on the cheap, which means getting random lots etc..

as a result, I have troops based on the 5 long strips AND on the square 5 hole bases..

As the old skool player that I am, I am more comfortable with the square bases, but really want to continue to use all the models I have..

Looking at the current NetEpicGold rules, they have BOTH bases in their sample photographs.. so my belief is that you CAN use the 2 styles togeather.. but maybe not in the same detachment/company.

Any have experience doing this?

My collection has a mixture of both styles purely as a consequence of Epic stuff being hard to get hold of so you get what you can. I don't think base size matters that much really so I am happy using both styles in my games although I don't really like the rectangular bases much but I tolerate them.

Obviously, the newer style rectangle bases came out a long time after the 2nd Ed Epic rules were written so there aren't any specific references to them within the rules.

I have less experience with NetEpic rules but I believe they are based off the 2nd Ed ruleset.

The guidelines in NetEpic for Infantry (and cavalry) state:

Bases are 20 mm square (old GW bases) or 12 x 40 mm (new GW), holding 3-5 infantry or 2-3 cavalry models.

I don't recall anywhere specifying that detachments or companies must be one or the other. I guess whether or not you mix base types within a single detachment depends entirely on your need for consistency.

I've been lucky in that all my stuff is on the square bases: in one trade on the tactical command forum the seller just threw in several hundred for free!

“Good people are quick to help others in need, without hesitation or requiring proof the need is genuine. The wicked will believe they are fighting for good, but when others are in need they’ll be reluctant to help, withholding compassion until they see proof of that need. And yet Evil is quick to condemn, vilify and attack. For Evil, proof isn’t needed to bring harm, only hatred and a belief in the cause.”

I know the fan-supported rules for Epic Armageddon gives a range of acceptable base sizes in the rulebook. I think it's drawn from the official GW rulebook, too.

Epic Armageddon rulebook page 10 - "The size of a stand and the number of models glued to it are left pretty much up to the player to decide within the following limitations: A stand may be no more than 40mm and no less than 5mm across in any direction ; A stand must be at least 20mm across in one direction"

Or in other words, stick 'em to whatever you like within those size ranges. I based all of mine on coins.

2p or 10p coins can look good as infantry bases. I used them for my Marine Scouts and Eldar Rangers, as they give space to make the base look more scenic. Great for units advancing in cover.

I expect Americans can use quarters just as well.

Does anybody have the diameter of those round holes in the bases?

When in pedant mode I like to point out that by this rule the long bases are illegal as they are over 40mm diagonally! . I play with square and long bases. It helps me tell nobs, boys and grots apart at a glance.
