Quick question that maybe deserves its own thread elsewhere - is there a Gunpla equivalent sub-community to Inq28? I.E. Gunpla/mecha builders who focus more on kitbashing new mechs, preferably with an eye towards grittier and maybe more realistic modeling, i.e. adding weathering, battle damage, stowage, applique armor and the like, as opposed to building and painting them the way they are shown on the box?

Is there a term for this subcommunity (i.e. I can say "Inq28" to someone in this hobby and chances are they will know what I'm talking about, what would I say to a gunpla fan that would convey a similar meaning?)

Gunpla kits (at least the modern ones) are designed to not need painting or glueing to complete. Building a kit according to the instructions is referred to as a "straight build" or "out-of-box" (OOB) build. Anything more than that, from painting to kitbashing, is often called a "custom build" or just a "custom".

To answer your question, there are definitely modellers who do more realistic custom builds and use military modelling techniques like weathering etc. Some builders create works that have a deliberately gritty or diesel-punk style, but as far as I know there isn't a specific term for this style or those who build in it, at least not in English.

I think in terms of a comparable aesthetic tone, the gunpla equivalent of some-one like John Blanche would be Kazuhisa Kondo, Makoto Kobayashi or Kow Yokoyama (who created Maschinen Krieger).

If there was enough interest in the topic it would probably warrant a thread in Painting & Modelling.

Thanks for the leads Turaxa. I'm not super interested in the topic, I was just working on an Inq28 project and my mind started wandering and wondering if there were similar subcommunities in other miniature/model building fandoms. While I get that in many ways Inq28 is an extension of the John Blanche style, i feel like its somewhat driven by the same cultural current that has been driving OSR/Artpunk in the RPG community, so I wondered if it might extend further than that.

Yeah, the big tires on that page look perfect. I think the wide Military version would suit best. But yeah, I'll need the kit in hand first. And something to use as the tracks. I like the Zinge ones, but they don't really fit in as well.

It might be easiest to plunder some track from a 1:35 or 1:48 kit, if you know a scale model builder they may well have spares

either rubber because they don't like them and buy upgrades to single links/link and length, or individual links as they are a pain to put together and the prefer single piece rubber

you can buy 1/35 and 1/48 track-links for 5-10€ which are meant to replace rubber tracks on scale models
depending on the track there would be enough for 2 models

Yeah I am likely to use 1/35 M60A1 track, as it suits some of the other vehicles I am running. I'll see what I can scrounge up to use as sprockets and idlers, as well as return rollers and track rollers.

It's 0.5cm shorter in length, 1 cm thinner in width, but 3cm taller than a Rhino. I think with a bit of manipulation it would make a great replacement for the Forgeworld Repressor, which is what I think I will do. I already have the PuppetsWar Taurus "aka, Brick" to use as a Rhino, this will be a good way to differentiate.

That Wandering Earth APC is great, the Four-armed Emperor will be pleased with my acquisition.

what I was expecting to be on a slow boat from China was clearly on one of the rare planes so I thought you'd like to see the Meng Wandering Earth Truck (chibi edition) from further up the page next to a plague marine and the closest I've got to a rhino on my workbench (no track but the other dimensions are the same)

the truck is raised up about the amount it would be if the wheels were on (i'll need to keep them off for painting)

It's probably looks a touch small to be believable as a rhino substitute (and it's got a couple of doors that you'd want to modify or cover) but if all that matters to you is the footprint it's pretty good

but cool none the less, I may have to get another couple when they show up in the UK

Edit: Now I've started to prime this I've found that the windows (even glued in all the way round in addition to the 'snap' fit) are really not well enough anchored to take any pressure, like when trying to mask them for spray painting,

i'd recommend using some epoxy putty at each end to make sure they're well attached to the body before you close up the hull, it should be possible to do so without it being visible

I had one of those I turned into a demi respectable Space Wolf Dreadnaught a number of years ago. The arm cannons were cut an butchered into a ML and a power claw. I cut the top gun barrels back to be smoke launchers and I removed the ass-piece which was detachable. I assume this is a new model and will be built differently. Kayback, you didn't modify a model. It sounds like you butchered one of the toys. There were NO models released of the monster that included diecast parts. That sounds like it was probably the Matchbox Monster toy, which was a repackaged Takatoku Destroid Monster. Either way, that thing was worth money! If you cut up and eventually threw out a Takatoku original... wow. The original Takatoku version goes for hundreds of dollars these days.

So, desecration of what many toy collectors consider to be a holy grail aside, this particular Monster model is just a reissue of the old kit from the 80s. Glue together, no poly caps, and generally not very good by today's standards. I wish Bandai would just make some new kits of Macross stuff besides Valkyries. Can you believe that the standard Regult battlepod has never been reissued? You can't tell me that a brand new Quedluun Rau model kit wouldn't sell like crazy.

For any fans in the thread of Ma.K/Maschinen Krieger, have they ever made smaller kits/models/figures at a wargaming scale? The smallest stuff I typically see is display model/old Inquisitor 54mm-ish scale so too big for a typical wargame. I've found some 3d models and remember the old AT-43/Dust lines but I'm curious if there is something more official. I also don't know much about the universe so I was curious if there is an easy to read site that gives a technical and visual breakdown of the power armor suits in the universe.

Yes, they released the 1/35 scale blind boxed figures way back in the early 2000s. There's also the gashapon mini models, which I believe are smaller.

It looks like those are 1/35 which is 50mm+ and a bit too big for my uses for RPG and skirmish gaming.

Poser McBogus showed one of the MaK gatchapon kits in this post. It looks about the same size as a primaris marine maybe? I have an unassembled one of these, perhaps the same one. If you want to search for them, the product information on the capsule mine came in is "kaiyodo / 35gatcha-nen / kow yokoyama world / vol20".

EDIT: I didn't see the above post before posting mine. That's definitely the same series that I have though, if not the same model.

They've done a few series of them, now. I've never come across them in the wild when I was in Japan, so I can't really speak to how big they are. Those are probably about as small as you're going to get with official models. I think maybe one of the Hasegawa vehicle kits had some small scale suits included as well. If you want smaller, you'll probably have to look into 3d printing. I know people have used the 1/35trading figures for 28mm gaming though.
