Oh, well then. I guess I'll just have to get over this hippy, godless liberal way of thinking that racism is racism whenever.

Bad movies can still be entertaining. See: anything labelled "Cult movie".

What are you talking about? "The Princess Bride" was awesome.

A movie that is almost universally loved is not exactly a cult movie.

Think more Killer Tomatoes, Killer Klowns, Troll 2, and Plan 9. Those movies with a small but dedicated following.

A cult film is a film that has a small but dedicated following, either way "The Princess Bride" was a modest success at the box office so I could see it fitting under that definition.

It's debatable. Rocky Horror has actually transcended being a cult film in the eyes of many people who study films and its culture by dint of its popularity, Princess Bride has made that same sort of rise in culture.

So it's going through that awkward phase of being too well known to be cult anymore but still not popular enough to be considered mainstream.

Pretty much, it's mainstream enough for it and Last Unicorn to have just gotten new adaptation graphic novels a couple years ago.

The thing that always strikes me about the Bay movies (which are terrible) is that they had the same guys working on them as the Prime series (which is very entertaining).

I'm at work so I can't actually watch this new trailer now but I'm curious who gets more lines of dialogue in the Transformers movie- humans or Transformers?

Humans, but then, that's been true in several episodes of every series bar RiD, Beast Wars, and Beast Machines.

It must be a failure in my memory but that conflicts with my memory of G1, Animated and Prime.

If nothing more the two trailers I have seen has established that there's a family (single parent by the look of it), they live on a farm in Texas and they're struggling financially. The father is at the least mechanically gifted. Conversely I think the last trailers I saw, from the Transformers, had a roar as the totality of the dialogue. The films previously have been, as I suspect this will, been about humans with the Transformers as mechanisms for expensive, messy CGI and explosions (assuming Bay can't find a way to have the US military do it). The treatment of the titular characters as set pieces needs to change. It'd be like the TMNT film being about April with the turtles just there to provide CGI action breaks.

Boy do I have some bad news for you about Bay's upcoming TMNT movie.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

One of the main complaints against Prime Season 1 was how much it focused on the kids.

As for G1, that's how nostalgia works. There were more episodes heavily featuring a human character or centered on a human character(most often Spike, then Daniel in Season 3) than ones focusing on the bots and even the ones focused on bots tended to be about their interaction with humans(Skids and Raoul, the movie episode, the great race, even the Giant Purple Griffon). Get on Netflix and watch G1 again and see how often you're looking at those hard hatted idiots and their friends. There's several episodes where there are more human named characters than robot ones. You do get episodes like The Key to Vector Sigma and the one with the female Autobots where there's little to no human interaction, but they're few and far between until Season 3 and Rodimus' crew.

Also Animated? The first season is all about human villains and the Sumdacs(before we found out Sari was a protoform).

I totally agree with you, Kojiro. What we really need is for someone to do Last Stand of the Wreckers- and get Liam Neeson to do a Taken style Impactor. Get Bruce Campbell to chew scenery as Kup, and Dani Pudi as Ironfist, and you've got yourself a movie!

I'd love Hasbro to do a series of IDW direct to DVDs like the DC Animated features.

My first thoughts on the kids were, admittedly that they were going to be a drawback but- and this is the important bit- they didn't overshadow or push the bots into the background. I ended up liking Jack and Miko and not even minding Raf. The balance was there (to say nothing of the Decepticons getting their own share of completely human free screen time). I don't mind Jack playing along side Arcee because she's not reduced to her scenery alone.

As for G1, that's how nostalgia works. I have the DVDs but I haven't watched them for about 4-5 years. I'd love to again if I can find the time. Bear in mind that at 30- my age when I last watched them- I can assure you I saw them differently than when I was 8 but I still didn't recall such a human slant.

Also Animated? The first season is all about human villains and the Sumdacs(before we found out Sari was a protoform).

Who the villains are doesn't really bother me. In fact I like there being a break from thwarting Megatron's plan of the week. It's all about balancing the bots and the humans. In an ongoing series you can afford to have episodes that swing more one way than the other and even a given movie in a series of movies can do so but so far they have focussed overwhelmingly on the humans.

Don't get me wrong, I want to see big robot smashfests as much as the next guy but I also want to care about said robots at least a smidge. The current films remind me of the big final battles of the Matrix. Lots of explosions and robot things killing each other and visually entertaining but ultimately I don't give a damn if that mini dreadknight dies because it's had no role in the story. In TF3 we're supposed to care that Ironhide is betrayed and murdered but we don't. Because previously Ironhide's contributions have been fight scenes and requesting to vapourise Sam's dog and parents. The extremely brief appearance and death he gets in the original animated movie is an infinitely better portrayal to say nothing of the characterisation it gives Megatron.

Tell that to my wife. She cried during that scene. She still fast forwards through it because it makes her upset.

I also know several females who are still upset Starscream bit it in DotM.

All I can ask is why? Ironhide got a handful of lines at that and is a trigger happy loon kept in check by Prime who actually has to remind him a) cannons are loud and b) Autobots don't murder sentient life forms (except when those life forms hold different political beliefs- then it's totally cool).

You'd have to ask her. I wasn't ever really a fan of the Oregon Ox in G1, either.

That third film was so bad I don't remember Starscream dying.

This was way better.

The way Starscream died in the Bay film was absurd. Prime's death in the original movie was, I think, one of those moments seared into my mind. Yes it was a giant to commercial, and maybe its impact on me was an accident of chance but Prime rolling out to do what had to be done, no matter the cost has always deeply resonated with me. I solidified in my mind that idea that doing the right thing, even when the costs to you are dire is still the doing right thing.

I saw the first one and it was ehh. The second one is the only film to date where I left the theatre before the movie had ended, specifically, about 30 minutes in. I don't think I even watched the third one.

I nevertheless feel comfortable in agreeing with you that no matter how Starscream died in the movie it was not as good as the coronation.

So a quick tangent here since it arose organically. I understand what you are saying, and I respect it, but I'm not sure I agree with it. Is it wrong to temper your condemnation for a person who doesn't fit with modern societal norms if they did fit with them apropos to their context? i.e. should we denounce historical figures as racists even if they were considered progressive with regards to race relations to their timeframe, like Lincoln?
