Maybe GW is replacing all their server hardware?

I don't even know if they have more than one server honestly.

Well before the one we have now GW's site used to look like this: http://web.archive.org/web/20060110004800/http://www.games-workshop.com/

So yeah, it was an upgrade in my opinion that we had the one we did.

You know, I was looking at the image of the full mini and I've noticed that it says "all this plus:" and then says the mini. I'm now really curious what the "all this" is now.

I'm pretty sure Finecast is covered under "???" though. Besides, if it only takes us BACK to 2009, that means we're still missing 2008 and sooner.

I am humbled being amongst great historians.

On second thought I doubt GW will want to rehash all the ways theyve tried to dupe their customers

"Dupe" implies they were actually intelligent or mallicious about it. I'm afraid the more likely answer is that every idea we've ever scratched our heads over were likely ideas they through were good ones.

No problem.

I have to be up at 5am and the site isn't up yet so I'm just going to look in the morning. Good luck with the insomnia, that's never any fun.

If there's a special bonus miniature, I will rejoice. Even if it's just a silly-looking space marine captain it's still potential free stuff, and something I can paint and place in my box of shiny, collectable things.

If there's any kinds of price discounts or expensive finecast kits going to plastic and being slightly less expensive, I will rejoice. Hell, if prices stay the same I'll rejoice.

If this is an excuse to raise prices and put models in new boxes where you get less models/box (not saying it's happening, just saying it's possible), I will be very unhappy.

We shall see what happens.

That site was amazing. I remember there being banner documents and such for the old print-and paste standards and just got my hands on one of the dwarf ones using that link. You can't get anything close to that off the current site. One 20 year old document has rendered more useful information than the entirety of their blog so far.

Or just the face-lift. I would be genuinely shocked if any real functionality was actually added. In fact, I will be genuinely shocked if a fairly large amount of legacy content (say, the Specialist Games resources) isn't lost in the Warp during the transition.

Assuming you did it properly you'd build the new site on same or new hardware, then switch the DNS entry (can take hours to replicate around the internet) or even better the load balancer over to the new site (live in seconds) if staying with the same data centre. Only small, one man band operations should be looking to do the migration during the downtime. Your switch over should be as painless as possible with only final shakedown testing needed, SIT, UAT, etc. should have already been performed against the actual production servers running the final build ofthe service that has already been tested on test/UAT, all ahead of go live itself.

'All this' isn't an awful lot:

* 1000+ exclusive products
* Same day dispatch (Place order by 12 noon and we'll ship the same day).
* Free pickup from Games Workshop stores (no matter how much you order).
* Free delivery on all orders over £40 - (euros are 50 no idea what is for other currencies).
* Free, easy returns

That is how consumers affect a company's product strategy.

1. Buy or not buy the current products.
2. Talk about what you like or don't like about them, or would prefer.

The "flaming torches and pitchforks march on head office" approach went out in the early 90s.

If there seem to be more people complaining rather than buying, than a few years ago, that may reflect the situation on the ground. We shall see when the end of year financial report is published.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Then they need to fire their marketing team and hire some actual professionals.

Taking the site down with zero notice and zero indication of when it will be back up is more likely to build annoyance than anticipation. The 'What's New' piece for Tuesday ended with a "and tomorrow we'll talk about..." piece...

I get why GW withdrew from Facebook. Their fanbase - using the term loosely - is far too noisy, internet savvy and overly sensitive for it to be worth their time dealing with the fallout from every little thing. But taking down the entire site for 24+ hours without a word is just amateur stuff.
