Here's a little question. Out of all the armies currently available to play within standard 40k rules. Which army is the best at taking down fliers. I was thinking this as a pure imperial knight army has a slight weakness in the form of fliers. What do you guys thing would be the best army at taking down fliers and too ally with knights in this case?

Imperial guard with the FW version of the Hydra cuz they have interceptor and ignoring jinks
Else from vanilla..
There's been a while people used to have heavy flyer lists against me... and iv'e been running crimson fist for my space marines when the new codex hit i normally use two dev squads with missle launchers behidn a Agies with quad gun now, it helps allot having tankhunter being Crimsonfist(with Imperial fist) chapter tactics. Then there's the new anti air tanks we have after that.. i still face a few flyers but not as many .

I'd argue guard would be best at it followed by space marines.

Farsight Enclaves, because your entire army can be battlesuits with skyfire.
EDIT: or Necrons with Night Scythes.

But it's not recommended because the skyfire upgrade costs 20 points per mod.

Definitely imperial guard. They have vendettas with TL lascannons and skyfire, and cheaper hydras with TL autocannons and skyfire.
And both vendettas and hydras can be taken in squads of up to 3, so it's possible to have 9 hydras and 9 vendettas. Plus, even their infantry can twin-link everything with orders, so it's possible to run a guard army where nothing is straight bad against fliers.

for about 360 you can get a Commander with dual missile pods, skyfire, and target lock with 3 suits, each with skyfire and dual missiles. Very mobile anti-air platform. That's Enclave too, so that's just your HQ and mandatory troop.
|
I'm expecting an Imperial Knights supplement dedicated to GW's loyalist apologetics. Codex: White Knights "In the grim dark future, everything is fine."
"The argument is that we have to do this or we will, bit by bit,
lose everything that we hold dear, everything that keeps the business going. Our crops will wither, our children will die piteous
deaths and the sun will be swept from the sky."

If you're wanting to start a Imperial Knights Army with anti-fire support, I would highly recommend Imperial Knights. Take 4 Knights (2 versions each) at 1490 points. Then take imperial guards as allies with minimal Company Command for HQ, a squad of veterans for Troops, then a squadron of 3 vendettas for your fast attack slot. The allied guards will cost 510 points, giving you a perfect 2000 point list.

- 12500
- 7000
Imperial Knight - 1500
-1250
High Elves - 8000

I have a peanut allergy. It's really inconsiderate.

Tau and IG have a remarkably good bevy of weapons to take out flyers.

Another vote for Guard.
Naked Company Command squad.
Infantry Platoon with 3 sets of Sabre Platforms.
Sabre Platforms replace your Heavy Weapon Teams with basically the same thing, but as Artillery with Skyfire and Interceptor.
Either that or just fully mechanised Elysians with lascannons on the Valkyries and Vendetta/Vulture support.

Good shout. I might consider this just for 4 S7 shots at BS5.
On topic, I'd say Tau are pretty good at AA. Riptides with VT are pretty good at taking them down.
Broadsides with missiles. Sky-ray. Crisis suits.

I'd suggest the Skyray over the Broadsides. It's amazing against MC and FMC, decent against flyers getting 1.67 pens assuming a marker hits and alpha striking it's missiles. Longer range gives it a bit more flexibility than the Broadside.
Two Broadsides cost over 170 with VT and will get about 1 glance and 1 pen on AV12. The benefit is that you're getting this each turn.
Commander, suits, and Skyray: about 475
Commander, suits, and 2 Broadsides: about 532
The difference in cost is enough for an ADL. Spend a bit more for an Icarus Lascannon for the commander ends up at 557 and now you'll have an incredible control of the sky.

Despite their anti-air superiority, I would caution against tau if you you are not used to low ally levels as tau are desperate allies with IK. Otherwise, go for it.

That's why I wouldn't use the word "brutal" for marine anti-air. Stormravens are overcosted and Stormtalons usually have to HP stuff out.
