A friend of mine used it with a group of his mates in uni; heavily modified.

He only did it for a laugh, because it's supposed to be the worst RPG ever written

Apparently he liked some elements of it though (The way some of the mechanics worked was interesting, but required a lot of modification and trimming down to work smoothly.)

He didn't bother with it for long. It took him more time to make it playable than was worth it.

FATAL is well known among old-school gamers as a kind of sick-joke to the gaming world. It's basically a game that provides detailed rules, tests, modifiers, etc for every kind of depraved act that a player might think of.

I've read a few reviews of the game, but flatly refuse to download that filth onto my computer.

I have read it. It actually did a few things well (believe it or not). A fantasy RPG that actually uses skills for combat instead of some arbitrary system that is totally separate and disconnected from everything non-combat is a wonderful thing indeed.

Also getting experience points in different methods depending on what your class would actually do for a living is an amazing idea that I really wish a bigger game would run with (warrior? get exp by swinging your sword. Thief, get xp by stealing stuff. Basketmaker, get xp by weaving baskets...yes really).

They did that in earlier iterations of D&D.

I was not aware of that. Now I have visions of a skill based RPG where at character creation you pick a couple primary "archetypes" off a list of stuff like "fighting, talking, stealing, magic" etc and that determines which actions you get exp for. It could be like 1.5x exp for your primary, 1x for a couple secondary, and 0.5x for doing other stuff. Then you spend that to bump your skills. I'm liking that...

Well you still had based xp, but you got a bonus for different things depending on class. Thieves got xp equal to the gold they stole, or value equivalent for items. If they stole a magic dagger worth 100gold they would get 100xp. I think fighters got extra xp for each monster killed. That kind of thing.

I've seen that system in computer-based RPGs, but it seems way too unwieldy for anything pen & paper. Hell, I find most XP systems too time consuming and usually just wing it as a DM anyways: "today, I feel like you did about 300 xp of stuff; Jack, you get an extra 100 for those smart moves and making some good character-based choices" or w/e

They apparently did that in Final Fantasy II. I haven't played that game, but I've noticed that it didn't return in FFIII, IV, V, etc...

It got used in Final Fantasy Tactics. Unfortunately, we can't evaluate the usefulness of it because it had no immediate successor (FFTA and FFTA2 came much later, and don't use that method).

It got used in Final Fantasy XIV version 1.0. But swapping it out for a more mainstream experience system was one of the first things that happened when the leadership on the game was changed.

That's probably reasonable. I think if the system was built right you could do it without too much headache though. Everytime the GM makes some cool stuff happen they decide if its a "fighting" encounter, a "looting" encounter, a "talking" encounter, an "athletics" encounter...etc. You could have a character focus on one of those kinds of encounters to get extra xp from, and then add on modifiers like "magic" which rewards the character for using magic or "witty one liners" which rewards characters who use style and flair (as voted by other people playing the game), or various "divine champion" modifiers where they get xp for doing stuff in alignment with their god in any give encounter.

You could even track experience in "encounters" and just get rid of the "xp" number all together.

I don't know, I make half finished fragments of ideas for games that never go anywhere all the time. I'll let this thread take its course now. I bet lots of interesting stuff can come out of the origional topic of conversation.

Darn it... I got a page describing crimes and punishments and thought I'd lucked out, but then I actually read the dang thing. Apparently "homosexuality" is listed as a crime, and Kolbolds punish it by drawing and quartering (but only in males, it's legal for females).

I keep meaning to buy a physical copy of FATAL.

Not to actually read or play it, but just to keep on hand as a joke and if players need some... perspective for how much worse it could be.

I remember seeing another RPG like this one, called Human Occupied Landfill.

For one thing, if i remember right the entire book is written in a font that looks like it's handwritten, and sometimes the call-out boxes near the rules will just go on rants.

Perfect examples that are not work-safe:

The same fine folks who made "Pimp: The Backhanding". Heck, as long as we're listing potentially offensive games might as well drag out them all right?

Perhaps, but the main difference to me is the intent. HoL and Pimp are meant to be tongue in cheek. The author of FATAL was completely serious(or the world's most dedicated method troll) about writing a real game.

If looking for a horrible RPG on the par with FATAL, go for Racial Holy War, a KKK endorsed roleplaying game where well, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out where to go from there with a title like that..

As a question, because we are genuinely curious, it says that there was a Monster manual equivalent, the Grimorium Monstrum.

Does anyone have a link to it? Only, we reviewed the main book for our RPG group but a game review is incomplete without the Monster Manual being covered.

I just actually read the post. Huh. Never heard that setting book before. All I can say about it is that it is everything you would expect from a FATAL setting book.

Kind of. Everyone, not just thieves, got XP for treasure. Treasure was probably the biggest source of XP.

HAHAHAHAHA! I've heard about FATAL before. There's some stuff about it on 4chan. I don't browse 4chan really but I was told about it from other online nerds as a joke. It's really, really terrible. You know you've stumbled upon sh*t when you roll to find the circumference of your own *sshole. I'm pretty serious. They say that's a thing.

I really don't know whether I should thank you or not for pointing me in the direction of reading the rest of the thread. I ended up following the link into the "creepiest gamer ever" story and the "Brazilian death squad" story. I had read those before, but it was long enough ago that they had faded into the back corners of my mind and I hadn't thought about them in ages.

On the one hand it makes me feel much better about myself as a human being. On the other hand...dang...

Also on a lighter note this quote made me laugh
I've read one [edition of FATAL], and if you've got the Sanity to spare on two, you'll be humanity's first line of defence when the psychic aliens attack!
