i live in a city with only 1 hobby shop i can buy stuff at for 40k and ya know what i like the people there and i like the store owner and id love to play there. its a games workshop official store to boot. i am currently making a 40k dark angels army and id like to add a whirlwind to my army. my dilema causing me headaches however is that here in canada a whirlwind is bloody expensive ( $75 ) and im now dropping that kind of cheddar on a tank.i found a local guy selling an old model whirlwind bit pile and to my fortune it has the old 2nd - 3rd edition rocket pods.
in theory could i just mount the missle rack to a razorback gun turret? would that be admissible for in-store play? id feel a lot happier dropping 40 bucks on a razorback and then another 10 on some old bits than 75 on the full tank (and wait a week because my store doesnt actually stock whirlwinds in house)

If it’s 100% GW parts, even old ones, they shouldn’t bat an eye.
That said, I don’t know the policies of your local GW. YMMV

its a conversion with GW parts, so its still there product that at some point was bought. You could even say you bought the old whirlwind and the chassis broke in some way. how would they know?
in general, mostly ive never had a problem in my local GW store. I mean I have battlewagons that are scratch built and they have never said a single thing other than that they like my wagon
rule of cool generally prevails

While we're on the subject, how do GW feel about you using non-traditional modeling materials (not from rival companies) i conversions? For example, guitar strings?

They seem fine with it in my LFGs, ive seen the GW workers using non- GW parts from rival companies to make conversions
guitar strings im sure will be fine.
A) its a small part of a whole model (unless youve made a CSM guitarstring of doom? which would be awesome)
B) they probably wont even be able to tell once painted

It's a small part of a large model; I'm using it as piping.

I think, if anyone from a GW store got weird about any specific stuff used in a conversion, it's time to stop going to that store.
Banning a model because it used guitar string as a component? Get a life, and a shower, you scruffy Herbert.

I'm going with the rule of cool here for playing in a local shop. I think the rule now for official games workshop tournies is what 70% GW model rest what ever I do believe. SO my rule is the cooler it looks the less it will be questioned.
