So I'm getting my Scions this weekend and I was brainstorming different Scion colour schemes, until I found this particular piece of art:

I was wondering, how might I go about painting the armour in that dirty style? The armour/helmet trim seems to be a very dirty bronze, and I reckon the glowing parts like the eyes could be red with orange highlights, but I'm not quite sure how to do the armour.

It is the studio Militarum Tempetus scheme and it is in the Paint Splatter section of the newest White Dwarf magazine.

The studio blue is way, way too bright IMHO, and I don't think even a heavy wash would fix it. I'm trying to find a sort of scheme that isn't garish as hell and also evokes the special forces theme.

Maybe its just on my monitor but the blue in that image comes out far dirter, darker and closer to a turquoise.

That might be because it a stylized drawing of the studio scheme and not a miniature. That picture is taken from as-yet-to-be-released codex.

I still would say that a good place to start is the checking out how the studio painters did it and work from there.

I, personally, once money is more forthcoming, will be painting them with dark grey to black carapace and deep olive green fatigues. the eyes will be painted a glowing red color

That metallic teal really reminds me of gears of war.

If you're going for the metallic teal rather than the matte one, and darker too, like in the artwork rather than the official models, I'd consider a heavy drybrush of boltgun metal or another dark silver, then following it with blue glazes. All probably over a white basecoat.

White basecoat > metal drybrush > teal glaze > black wash

I think that might yield decent results.

Im going to be doing a lot of priming and painting tomorrow. I might give it a test for you on one of my old stormtroopers. Will report back.

edit: maybe metal mixed with teal then a blue glaze then black wash? will test several ideas because now I am also curious lol

I've achieved good results by drybrushing silver/metal (boltgun then lightly with chainmail) over black then using blue (or whatever colour you wish) ink. I haven't tried these new paints yet so I'm not sure of their properties but I'd imagine a glaze would work.

I'd do it the space wolves way and go the fang for foundation then russ grey and fenrisian grey for highlights. Then flesh wash for a wash.

Now accepting commissions!

For those not using the studio scheme for your Scions, especially those that are going for a "realistic" or modern military feel, how are you planning to paint that gold trim that makes the carapace armor look like a 16th century breastplate? I've been trying to conjure up a good replacement for metallic trim but am drawing a blank.

I'd like to say thanks so far for everyone's contributions, I'm most grateful, I'm not usually one to try more complicated stage painting but Bolg's idea sounds like one I'll give a go when I grab the paints this weekend.

Another question, what paint schemes are you lot considering for your Scions?

I'm probably going to paint the fatigues/uniform Vallejo Luftwaffe camo green, the body armor and rucksacks a khaki tone, and berets red. No idea what to do about that trim on the armor thus far, however.
