Apparently the "largest battle ever" record has been topped yet again, only two months after the previous fight. The difference this time is that this engagement was actually on the Chinese server. For those of you who don't know Chinese internet laws require any game played by Chinese citizens to have its web servers based in china. CCP didn't want to move their main servers to China (for fairly obvious reasons) so they set up an independent server for Chinese players.

I personally find this very interesting. The Chinese server has developed very differently than the other server. The alliances are much bigger (one group owns about 50% of the space there is to own apparently, and the blobs of each alliance are much bigger overall) and I thought that there was much less of a military/cold war mentality going on over there than on the global server. Looks like that changed. Apparently the motivation behind this fight was to stop this one group of players from owning even more territory and try to make EVE less of "one man's game".

From what I can see of the loss totals, the challengers got their collective butts handed to them. That said though, any big battle like this is kind of anti-climactic. When you have alliances of this size fighting each other all the damage from fights like this can be repaired in a couple weeks, and the funds lost in ships are generally repaid to the individual pilots within 24 hours out of the alliance war chest, at least that's how it works in the global server.

Looking forward to seeing how this escalates. A giant war between 2 massive corporations could really draw some attention to the Chinese server.

EDIT: maybe should have posted this in video games. Already asked a mod to look at it and move if they think it's appropriate.

While I find the numbers EVE is often able to churn up impressive, I have to say. These battles would be way more epic with a more interesting combat system XD

I agree. EVE is interesting viewed from the outside through the lens of the war correspondents, but if I was going to play it I'd really want a game where I have the option to pilot a ship myself instead of just telling the helmsman where I want to go.

Pretty much, I wouldn't touch the game with a 10 foot stick.

But, I love the kind of madness it is able to generate.

It's not ever been that kind of game. You win at EVE with planning and tactics, not fraction of a second twitch-reflex, and I can't help but feel it would lose something if you were flying around doing loop-the-loops and getting stuff in crosshairs.

Looks like they are adding that aspect to the universe for those who prefer that. They're developing a fighter based game for the Occulus Rift.

Pretty much, I would probably love EVE if it had proper combat mechanics, but EVE would never have any of these occurances if it did.

Eve:Valkyrie (or whatever) that is for the Occulus Rift looks amazing. With Facebook's money being pumped into the OR system, it's more likely to happen than before.
But Eve as it is now, you've really got be throw time at it to get anything out of it. It's not really a casual game.
Then there's Dust514. Same universe and impact, but FPS.

I love EVE, I really do. Played pretty solid for a year. Just don't have enough free time in my day to dedicate for it. You can play it like a 2nd job incredibly easily. Every time I read an article like this I remember some of the fun stuff I've done (which doesn't really have anything to do with big fleet engagements) and want to start playing again.

Also Dust 514 keeps making me want to buy a PS3, but considering my general skill level with FPS games (and complete lack of experience with console FPS games) I don't think that would end well.

I just ran the numbers and the 11 trillion ISK in destruction is equivalent to $303,398.60 USD in real-world cash.

Eve is probably on of the only games to truely allow players to grasp strategy. Even RTS games, which have strategy in the name, are really more about tactics than strategy. Eve's structure and scale enables it to push an end that often gets ignored.

That said, an improved combat system won't destroy that. A system where the player can be more active in controlling their ship and its operation can only improve the game at this point. Even in combat, EVE is a lot of sitting and waiting for things to happen.

I found playing EVE like playing an Excel spreadsheet. I know there's people who love it(just like there's people who love doing spreadsheets), but I can't stand it. I'd rather not have my games feel like I'm at a job.

I also have no idea what's going on the times I've watched fights. It's like a laser rock show.

The Dust 514 infantry expansion adds the "grunt" level fighting for ground actions.

That was an older battle. This battle was 26 trillion in losses
