I've been modelling for just over a month, so I'm pretty new to that kind of thing, but I really want to make some DA objective markers for a friend. The image I have in my head is a warp gate with a fallen dark angel beginning to step through, so you only see his arm, one leg, head and a bit of torso.

Obviously I can paint it black, but I'm not sure what else to do to differentiate between a fallen and a normal space Marine wearing black. Do they use dark angel decals? Should I use Marine or chaos Marine bits? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Push it over?

But seriously you could consider some preheresy era armour and warp taint it a bit.

I think maybe painting a Chaos Marine in Dark Angels colors would help to identify it as a traitor DA.

I'd kitbash it with one of the preheresy tutorials. Give it a bit of that mix and mashed 13th great company look the wolves that wandered out of the eye had. Scavenged parts and whatnot. The fallen who got sucked up probably would be having to make due with what they can pick up so their armour probably should be a bit eclectic in appearance.

Not sure if this is correct or not, but I seem to recall seeing a Fallen with the DA symbol X'ed out in red.

Black armor, DA symbols, chaos backpack and weapons.

I don't know if the Fallen wear robes or not.

I'm not sure fallen would have too many anvillus pattern backpacks. AFAIK those were mostly utilized by the traitor legions. A few scavenged one might not look out of place, but I doubt they would be exclusively of that pattern.

Based on the artwork I've seen fallen also are known to wear robes.

In the old 3.5 Codex they have (for some god-awful reason) a picture of "A Red Corsair formerly of the Dark Angels chapter." (how ironic) with their loyalist symbols eXed out. Actually, that was how Red Corsairs all looked.... They show Ultramarines and Space Wolves on the same page the same way.

Hm... the Fallen have all ancient gear since some of them just got out of the warp, maybe here for barely a few moments. So ancient gear sounds about right. Otherwise, DA markings I'd say, but no robes.

This would be more subtle, but use the regular Dark Angel stuff, paint it black, of course, and greenstuff the winged sword on the shoulderpad to be unbroken (or paint it that way).

Nice ideas! I think I'm about set to give it a go - I like the idea of the unbroken winged sword. Possibly X'ed out to make it really obvious.

Normally it's against forum netiquette (I believe) but there is an awesome (old) thread on WarSeer:

Best fallen project I have ever seen.

Otherwise the search function might have helped you already:

THanks., I'd found one of those threads but not the others, that's really helpful.

Would it be better to use an old Rogue Trader era model, do you think? I'm a bit nervous of hacking up a metal mini since my experience so far is all in plastics, but it strikes me that old minis is a way to show old soldiers.

Or maybe it'll just be too short and look silly.

Yeah, it would probably look goofy. Plus, RT minis sell for quite some money, so if you sold those you'd have enough money for some Forgeworld pre-heresy bits (off of ebay).

get some DA veterans and trick them out with Chaosy bits.

you automatically lose points for using the trite gamer-isms: balanced, meta, Mat Ward, etc.

Use Dark Angel parts, and if you can't paint black the paint grey, start with dark grey and highlight to a light grey.

Then wash with nuln oil, or badab black to darken it right down to black and voila, a fallen angel.

I get the impression from the HH books that the Dark Angels originally wore black armour, but as more Calibanites joined the ranks they incorporated dark green into the armour to remember the forests of Caliban.

Eventually it was mainly Terran Dark Angels who wore the black and because of this, Jonson sent mostly Terrans back to Caliban with Luther because he didnt trust them as much as the Calibanites, who were sworn to him above anyone else.

Forgeworld Heresy era armor painted black with DA markings is how I would do it today.

My old Rogue Trader era Beakies were painted thusly.

"maybe" working in some chaosy bits, but honestly, I would just go with the Forgeworld stuff.
