Subject: If you could not play 40k, what game system would you turn to?
|
 |
Shade of Despair and Torment
|
Hey there. I play 40k at my local gw store. Mainly because I have played gw games since 1990, and my gw is .33 miles from my house, plus I do not know of any other gaming group in my area. Then I thought, if my gw store closed, what would I do? (No one else for 50 miles plays). What if I do find a local game group, and they play a certain game (not gw). What would I hope it would be... or if you were in this situation, what would you likely fall back on?
Or let's say you moved, and no one in that area played GW games (actually dislikes them, doesn't want to get into it) and they only played some other system...what would you want it to be?

Wait for someone else to buy up 40k and continue playing, the modeling and lore opportunities of the other games fail to interest me.

I will keep playing 40k. Because the background.
Two different futures unfold before us:
1) A company buys 40k. As a result, the game gets better.
2) Nobody buys the company but the countless hordes of fans keep it alive through house-made rules. As a result, the game gets better.
Keep in mind that in 10 years we will (most probably) be able to 3D-print whatever model we want for free. So I expect a massive boom. There are many, many wannabe model-designers out there.
I will try Warmachine when the PC game is out though...
Something important: believe it or not, when a new Codex is released the previous Codex does not turn into ashes. And the same go for the Rulebooks of previous editions. Even if GW disappear, you will be able to open, say, the 5th edition Rulebook and perhaps even play a game. So I think people will keep playing.

I've already stopped playing WHFB and 40k, but I still love the background and read the books occasionally/paw through codexes. But regardless of whether or not GW closes down, I've switched my game purchases 90% to FFG for X-Wing, Relic, Conquest, and other LCGs and Mantic for Deadzone, Kings of War and Dreadball, and of course the upcoming Warpath, of which I already have 3 armies fully ready to go (Enforcers, Corporation, Marauders). The other 10% goes to random companies and GW's paints. That's all that I purchase from GW, as I've tried a couple other companies' paints, and I still prefer GW and it's the easiest to access.

40K is just one of many games I play including out of production ones. I still play Star Wars minis weekly and still play '80s board games and RPGs. So just because GW were not about would be no reason not to play 40K.

I wouldn't. As a teen i don't have the time or money to become invested in another wargame to the extent that i have with Warhammer fantasy/40k and if they magically disappeared I would probably put more time into my other sport-y hobbies, do more school work or simply play more computer games. It takes a lot of effort to immerse yourself into an entirely new setting and truth be told it probably wouldn't be worth the effort.

I'm guessing 40k will still be popular for a long time afterwards since it's been invested in by people for so many years...heck, I'm pretty sure the main reason GW has continued to exist these past few years has been on its legacy more than anything.
I would keep playing with my 40k armies, maybe shrink them down a bit as time goes on. I've been learning about Warmachine more lately, and I imagine that I'll be playing that regardless of any future happenings with GW. Also, Dystopian Wars! I'm glad to see a couple people mentioning it, and I hope it gets bigger. It's reminiscent of Epic, and I know that was a popular game in its time.

I don't think there are many (any) games out there that require as much of a time investment as 40k and I KNOW that there aren't any that require as much of a monetary investment except for warhammer fantasy.*
An infinity army can be bought for $160 AUD and only requires you to paint 8-14 guys.
An X wing list will run you $60-$120 and comes prepainted with all of 30 pages of rules to remember.
Dystopian wars requires more time painting but you can still get a 1,500 point fleet (I suppose that's the equivalent of a 1999+1 point 40k game) for $150 or so.
*Actually thinking about it there might be a couple of obscure games out there using all metal or all resin minis, but none of the well known ones require half as much money as 40k to get a orkable, average size list together.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

If Games Workshop went out of business, it's very likely 40k would get picked up by another company/a new company would be reborn from its ashes.
That being said, I'd probably wait for that to happen and maybe give Warmachine a try. Generally speaking, though, most miniature games don't really interest me outside of 40k. They don't have that spark for me.

I kinda think this is happening right now. The background sections in the Dataslates and Codexes are quickly degenerating into pew-pew-pew-go-go-marines. There was a turning point in 2011: "Codex: Grey Knights" was a massive success for them, and it set the new model to follow.
You have a point though...

While I don't want to derail the thread on to pricing, I have to mention that historical wargames are much cheaper than 40K, and have well established fluff backgrounds that offer a wide variation of interesting scenarios.
