Just a chill out day for us. Nothing special I'm afraid. I might steal a bit of Easter egg off the kids.

One of my teachers talked about this. Apparently the ladies get to throw cold water on all the guys afterwords too. Mutual abuse for everyone!
I have quite fond memories of hunting around my back yard for Easter eggs back when I was younger. I'm afraid I'm at that age where I'm basically a single guy living by myself so not much in the way of current traditions unfortunately.

We celebrate Easter at a very small Russian-Orthodox monastery in Frisia. Today, my mother wanted to try something new, so we also visited a really large baptist church. It was really, really huge and baptists are just plain weird. I thought it was horrible, but my mother liked the silly songs. I call heresy on it. Why is the Inquisition never there when you need them? We also have special food, which is really nice. Another weird tradition that we carried over from Russia is that on Easter, we use nails to crack eggs.

Watching Chuck Heston's The Ten Commandments is done pretty much every year around this time. It is cheesy and lots of parts don't hold up well, and it is also pretty strongly from an American POV more so than biblical in the narrative, but it is a classic and I watch it every year nonetheless.

My family normally just has a nice ham dinner. My mom goes to church for Easter Service and my dad goes because she wants him to. My sister and I haven't been home for an easter in like, nearly a decade now.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Most years, I go home for easter. We do basket blessing on Holy Saturday, and have ham and Kielbasi on Easter itself.
This year my fiance was working and I"m packing for our move, so I couldn't make it.
Instead, I fulfilled another holiday tradition: listening to Jesus Christ Superstar on Good Friday.

Why do so many families have ham on Easter? I mean, I also made one, but it wasn't until this thread that I realized that was the thing.
Also, what are "funeral potatoes"?

It's funny though...Jews don't eat ham and Jesus was jewish. So I hve no idea why it's a thing. Lamb would make more sense to me.
And I think that's a Utah thing. I'll find a recipe and show you to see if you recognize it and just name it differently.

A quick google search says that in North Europe to celebrate spring (which is around the same time of year as Easter I guess) people ate the last of their cured meats, which were usually pigs.
So once again, blame pagans XD

I'm thanking pagans.
I just had a bomb-ass ham that I threw into my slow-cooker and let that bad boy just steam in it's own juices.
Also had hand made scalloped potatoes, deviled eggs, and some fresh, grilled veggies.

This year I watched a film about the death and resurrection of a being who came from the Heavens to Earth to save us.
There was a surprising amount of property damage.
If I had the DVDs, I'd probably be watching another film about a very naughty boy too.

Easter Sunday Mass is a tradition for me.
I went today then went to Chef Zorba's for a breakfast of Pork Souvlaki, eggs over medium, hashbrowns, and sourdough toast. (I think I'll have that tomorrow too in fact).
If I were back home in Cali there probably would be a visit to cousins in Freemont and Union City. This year is my first Easter here in Denver and the first one without family. I've mostly been listening to stuff in my iTunes library and doing some painting which I gave up for Lent.

Apparently Jew eat matzoth for Passover or something. I tried some this morning (not sure it was Passover, I think it was yesterday), and plain matzoth tasted as I remembered it : about as good as paper . However, I seem to remember some recipe where you dissolve the matzoth in milk and add sugar or something that was much much better. I'll ask my mum about it. I am getting off-topic though. I did not do anything for Easter/Passover. Actually, if there were no matzoth on the table at the place where my friend invited me, I would not even have noticed it was now. We used to go chocolate-egg hunting though, very fun when we were kids! I guess I will start caring again when I will have kids of my own. So, not any time soon .

When you are slaves or wandering around in a desert for a long time you tend to not have a lot of sugar or milk.

Unless it's the Demerara Desert, then you'll only need to find milk somewhere (since Camedaries only give water, not milk)

Yeah, but when you will finally make it out of the desert, you will get milk again, and make delicious meals that your distant offspring will be able to enjoy in the far future because they will not be slave, and they will not voluntarily inflict paper-tasted matzoth on themselves when they can have milk. And you take comfort from that, when you are shivering in the cold desert nights. Therefore, it would be a crime not to use milk on the matzoth. Think of your ancestors that were wandering in the desert !

Got up in 6 am to prepare the fire and put the beer in the freezer. By 9am the fire has died out and only hot coals are left, time to put the spitted lamb on the coals. Continue to slowly rotate spit while drinking beer and trying really hard not to think about the idiocies the rest of your family/friends/people present sprout.
Typical Greek Easter...
