Im looking to get my teeth into a good rpg.
Dont really care about game mechanics, more looking for the rpg and exploration elements.
Fantasy or sci fi or otherwise is cool too.

Ive played the ES series, Dragonage and Fallout too so they're out and am ruling out mmorpgs.
Cheers!

For a true open world RPG experience you can get real deep into something like Mount and Blade: Warband.

Basically a mercenary company building RPG which can lead you onto a ton of different paths and experiences. Not a lot of story, you're really supposed to make your own out of it.

The base game is pretty old and has some annoying antiquities, I recommend scrounging around for a mod or two. The one I'm playing right now is Prophecy of Pendor and I recommend it.

Torchight is my favorite RPG series of all time. I've beaten the first game twice, (Once as Alchemist, once as Destroyer) and I'm currently in Act II of the Second game playing as Berzerker class. Awesome ability powers and 3-4 classes (Depending on the game) make for a great romp through the game!

I've played Sacred and enjoyed it also. It was really my first exposure to a RPG outside of Fate

Fate is okay, rather repetitive, but a good challenge on harder levels of difficulty. Very similar to torchlight in mechanics. NOTE: if you're looking for cool skills, DON'T play this. No skills at all. No classes, no open-world. Instead it has BAJILLIONS of Items, and 3 sequels. (I think the 4th game is the best as it has a companion hiring thingy)

I've seen M&B:Warband played by my brothers. It looks fun, but I prefer more Hack & Slash. It's much more about the actual Role-playing. And reading the text is a must.

A friend I know LOVES Dungeon Siege and the sequel is his favorite game of all time. I'm going to see about playing that soon

League of Legends has RPG aspects if your interested. I'd be willing to help you start League if you want.

If it wasn't sixty bucks I'd have gotten it myself. What style of RPG is it?

I'll add Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 and all their expansions to this as well as Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines if you get the fan-patch to remove the bugs. I think the Steam version comes with the patch? And it's fairly cheap over Steam these days.

The third Dungeon Siege game is supposed to be pretty bad, though.

Another addition is Knights of the Old Republic, and its sequel of you get the mods to flesh out the game more.

somewhere over the atlantic

Go buy a Sega Saturn and get Panzer Dragoon Saga.

If you don't want to do that, then get Okage Shadow King for PS2, or Symphony of the Night.

Fields of War is a fantasy turn based strategy game that uses the innovative command system in place of more traditional turn structures.

Are you familiar with the Mario&Luigi RPG series for the 3DS? It's similar to this just...pretty darn offensive. But alas, it's South Park and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Bit too easy though.

Dragon's Dogma is pretty good. It's more of a brawler but the game has an excellent class system, customising your main character and your companion is a bunch of fun and hiring/replacing the other two followers you can have to construct the perfect party is engaging.

The world is also very beautiful and has a strange otherworldly/dreamlike quality to it. However the story is a little strange and hardly explained.

Darksiders 2, although again more of a brawler, captures alot of that Substantial feel that RPGs have. It's certainly quite a long game and takes you to interesting locations.

I'll give a +1 to the Mass Effect games. ...well for the 1st one at least... I haven't tried the other 2 in the series. The 1st one I've played numerous times on the XBOX 360, PS3, and the PC. Totally dig that game... dang... now I wanna play through it again.

I have seen the second one played. Watched a guy play through it on Youtube. I think it's an amazing game. Really dialed up the intensity in combat from the first one. This guy wasn't playing paragon or renegade, he just picked whatever option seemed the most fun to him at any give point in time. That was a treat to watch. Some of the renegade options are seriously awesome...and deserved.

I'm more disappointed that I'm the only one to mention V:TM - Bloodlines. So glorious, yet so forgotten :(

Arcanum is pretty overrated imo. Seconding Vampire:Bloodlines. The game offers so many vastly different playstyles and actually tells a good story, a trait sadly about to be forgotten in today's game design lessons.

Bummer that Troika went bankrupt - while bug-ridden, their games usually were top-notch gameplay-wise.

Cheers peeps, lots of food for thought there.

Dark Souls is one Im angling towards. Is it more hack n slash than RPG though?

It is very centralized in gameplay, yes. The story elements are there, but it is a very unobtrusive story, you'll need to go looking for it (in item descriptions, conversations, etc). As far as calling it 'hack and slash', I suppose in broad terms, it is but it is very different than say...God of War hack and slash. Difficulty is part of the game, and there will be times where you get your ass kicked and need to consider your approaches and tactics. It is not an RPG that you can 'out stat' a boss fight.

There are RPG elements of deep story and very very deep character customization, though.

In the sense that melee is the most consistent form of combat. There are spells and bows, but both are somewhat unreliable.

That said, there's several classes of weapons and a bunch of weapons for each class, so I'd argue the combat is fairly deep.

Uhm..spells and bows are the easiest way to finish the game. The AI is too dumb to properly react to being attacked from a distance and magic is plain overpowered.

If nobody's suggested it yet the witcher 2 is awesome. I just picked it up in a sale and am enjoying it.

I don't disagree that magic is over powered, but unless you know where enemies are (NG+ etc), getting the jump on most from range isn't likely.

I feel like the developers definitely balanced the game around melee combat for better or worse.

Also I just like hitting things with swords and spears so take my opinion with as many grains of salt as you'd like.

V:TM - Bloodlines is available for five bucks on steam today, by the way, if it interests you.

Possibly the best FPS-RPG ever made.
