Sorry for the ridiculous delay in posting any Battle Reports - we’ve both been stupidly busy (me with work & Panic with X-Wing) and haven’t had time to make one of these since January.

So, I have a newly painted Noisy Marine army to test out, and Panic had a fancy new city battle board , so we’re here to try them out. We haven’t got any super heavies or fancy fortresses painted up yet, so the game isn’t exactly current tournament meta, but it’s PRETTY, and that’s what counts.

Panic’s Necron Greencron Tide - 1850pts

Overlord [Warscythe, Mindshackle Scarabs, Resurrection Orb]
Necron Lord [Mindshackle Scarabs, Resurrection Orb]
Necron Lord [Mindshackle Scarabs, Resurrection Orb]
14 Necron Warriors in a Night Scythe
14 Necron Warriors in a Night Scythe
14 Necron Warriors
3 Spyders [Gloom Prism]
10 Scarab Swarms
3 Scarab Swarms
Doom Scythe
Doom Scythe

ArbitorIan’s Noisy Marines - 1850pts

Chaos Lord (MoS, Sigil of Corruption, 2 Lightning Claws, Jump Pack)
Chaos Sorcerer (MoS, Mastery Level 3)
12 Noise Marines (8 Sonic Blasters, 2 Blastmasters, Icon of Excess, Champion)
6 Noise Marines (4 Sonic Blasters, Blastmaster, Champion with Doom Siren & Power Sword) in a Chaos Rhino (Dirge Caster)
6 Noise Marines (4 Sonic Blasters, Blastmaster, Champion with Doom Siren & Power Sword) in a Chaos Rhino (Dirge Caster)
12 Raptors (MoS, Icon of Excess, Meltagun, Champion with Powerfist)
6 Warp Talons
Chaos Predator (Autocannon, Lascannon Sponsons, Havoc Launcher)
Chaos Predator (Autocannon, Lascannon Sponsons, Havoc Launcher)

Pre-game

We played Scorched Earth from the Battle Missions book. The Chaos Marines are retreating and destroying the city as they go. It’s an objective mission where the Chaos Marines deploy and go first, with the addition that all the buildings are either on fire (Dangerous Terrain) or smoking (3+ cover save, block LoS).

The three objectives went in a rough row in the centre, around the Bastion in the Chaos End, the central building, and a ruin on the Necron side.

The Chaos Lord gained Flames of Spite as his Warlord Trait - all his unit’s weapons have Soul Blaze. The Necron Overlord was a Master of the Vanguard - all units within 12” roll two dice to run and picks the highest.

The Sorcerer rolled two powers on the Slaanesh table and one on Telepath, gaining Symphony of Pain (buffing Sonic Weapons), Ecstatic Seizures (unit punches itself in the face) and Psychic Shriek.

Deployment

Chaos deployed first, the big Noisy Marine unit and Sorcerer going onto the bastion battlements with the Predators behind, and the two Rhino squads shielding the Lord and Raptors. The Warp Talons stayed in reserve.

The Necrons then deployed one Lord and his unit in the smoking ruins and the Spyders and Scarabs as far forward as possible.

Necrons failed to seize the initiative so the Noisy Marines go first! Go Noisy Marines!!

Chaos Turn 1

The turn opens with the Predators and big Noisy Marine unit firing on the Spyders, killing two with cunning use of Focus Fire. The Rhinos speed towards the central burning building and the Necron Warriors

The Lord and Raptors move ahead of the Rhinos to screen them in case of Scarab attack!

Necron Turn 1

The Noise Marines move into cover further, their Lord ably commanding from the rear, as the last Spyder poops out another Scarab and takes a potshot at the Raptors, missing.

The Scarabs speed forward into the park, which turns out to be full of Death Budgies! Thankfully, as beasts they are immune to the tiny yellow killers.

Chaos Turn 2

The Warp Talons fail to show up, so the Lord and Raptor bounce forward around the Spyder and towards the Warriors. The Rhino behind them disgorges it’s squad onto the objective and then races around the side to cast some dirges.

The Sorcerer maledicts the Scarabs with Symphony of Pain and the big Noisy Marine squad fires at them, killing LOTS. This is followed up by the Predators, who wipe out the rest of the squad with high-strength weaponry.

Meanwhile, the Raptors assault the Necron Warriors and the Lord issues his customary challenge, which is accepted by the Nectron Lord. The Lord fails to Mindshackle, and dies, along with four Warriors. However, they pass their break test and all their self-repair rolls, returning to the combat!

The other Rhino moves back around the building, anticipating flying croissant death next turn.

Necron Turn 2

It’s turn two, but only one Flying Croissant arrives! It’s a Doom Pastry, comes in facing the Raptor combat, and death rays four Raptors to death and causes a hull point on the Rhino.

The Spyder and remaining Scarabs assault the Noise Marines in the burning building, killing two.

And the Raptors assault continues, the Raptors themselves only killing one Necron. The Chaos Lord kills the Necron Lord again, and this time he stays dead, and all the built up chaos juju turns him into a Daemon Prince!!

A FREAKIN DAEMON PRINCE!!!

Chaos Turn 3

The Predators wheel around and target the Doom Pastry but can’t hit it. The Spyder and Scarabs munch the last of the Noise Marines and round on the next squad, but the Raptors with their new Daemon Prince buddy kill att the Warriors bar one.

Whose robot nerve fails and he runs away. The squad disperse into the ruins.

Necron Turn 3

Two more flyers arrive - the second Doom Pastry arrives where the first left off, and a regular Criossand disgorges another Lord and squad by the Raptors, all ready to fire.

The original Doom Pastry wheels round to target the Predators, exploding one.

And the Scarabs attack the Rhino on the objective, munching it to another explosion (which takes out a Scarab base in the process).

The results of the shooting phase are in the bottom right, with all but one of the Raptors dead to Death Rays, Tesla Cannon and Gauss Rifles.

Chaos Turn 4

We lost the photos of this turn, but then Panic found them again! Hurrah! So, the Warp Talons turned up but scattered into the open so much that nobody was blound. The Daemon Prince and last remaining Raptor line up to charge the new Warrior squad, and the Predator wheels around to take out the Spyder, but also immobilises itself on the wreckage of the other Predator!

The big Noisy Marine unit wrecks the closest Pastry with the Sorcerer boosting their Strength and their weapons ignoring Jink.

And the small unit wipes out the Scarabs with Doom Sirens and yelling.

The Daemon Prince and Raptor then charge, inflicting some casualties on the Warriors, and evading Mindshackle Scarabs once again.

Still too many baked goods zooming around up there..

Necron Turn 4

So, the final Croissant arrives and the Overlord and his squad disembark near the central objective. They fire on the Warp Talons, killing five of them!

The other two round on the Noise Marine squad in the bastion, killing four.

And the Daemon Prince and remaining Raptor continue to attack the Necron Warriors, killing the second Lord and another guy.

Oh, and the remaining Predator got stuck on some the rocky wreckage of his Predator buddy last turn.

Chaos Turn 5

The final Warp Talon charges the Overlord, but misses, and the Overlord kills him. Stupid Warp Talons. Meanwhile, the Deamon Prince continued happily killing Warriors.

The last small Noise Marine squad make a dash for the central objective, hoping they can reach it in the following turn.

Necron Turn 5

And as the flyers all leave combat airspace in case of another turn, the Daemon Prince kills the last of the Warriors and consolidates into cover, hoping to make it over to the central objective.

But the game ends there! No more turns!

The Necrons hold the central objective, but the big squad of Noisy Marines forgot to get down from the Bastion and don’t hold the bastion objective, losing them the game! Doh!

Necrons 3 (1 Objective)
Chaos 1 (First Blood)

Necrons win!!

Good batrep. I really like the fish eye/birds eye view of the table at the end of every turn. Excellent models as well!

Another great bat rep as always.

Although I think the Csm list could do with a least one Helturkey for anti - airr.

Also get rid of the power fist on the raptor champ and get a lightning claw, then use the points for another melta gun or a boon roll for the lord.

Great batrep guys. Impressed that your camp managed to change into a DP thats never happens to mine, they must not be worthy.

Will read the batrep with my cornflakes tomorrow before work, but just wanted to post how happy it makes me that you took a Noise Marine list in units of 6 or 12 and only included marks of Slaanesh. Exactly how I run mine, and exactly [IMO] how a Noise Marine list should be. A little bit of me dies when I see Khorne allied with Slaanesh and mixed marks all over the place.

Ok, cornflakes eaten. Great report, things were looking bad for the noise marines until the lord turned into a daemon prince! Seems like the flyers then turned the game back the other way and took out a lot of pink stuff. Raptors and warp talons struggled, which is what I find when I play them too. The combo with the sorcerer and symphony of pain seemed to work really nicely. I always try to set it up but something always seems to happen which stops me getting it off.

Just one question, the necron flyer fired its deathray into a combat - is that allowed?

There's a Space Dragon coming, but I haven't built him yet - this is just the first batch of Infantry, hence why isn't quite light on the big guys..

Yeah, Warp Talons really are rubbish. I think I should probably start them on the board next time - their Blindy thing really isn't worth the exposure it subjects them to...!

We had EVERY bloody Death Ray question come up in this game. We probably spent more time checking Death Ray rules queries than anything else. As far as we can tell, the current consensus is...

- Death Rays are not rotating, but fixed forward with a 45 degree arc.
- You can place your Death Ray line anywhere you like, but can only allocate wounds to models in the arc.
- Because you target a point on the ground with the Death Ray (not a unit) you can use it to draw a line through combats. However, the Teslas have to fire at one of the units hit by the Death Ray, and they DO target a unit, so can't fire at units in combat. In our example, the Teslas fired at the Rhino, because that was hit by the line too.

From reading a million inter web arguments, I think that's pretty close to what most people think. Anyone play it differently?

hahaha

Another class rep as always, cheers for sharing. Nice to see a somewhat "different" Chaos build taking the field. How did you find the Raptors overall?

Love the top-view pics! They really help show the state of the battle at the end of each turn. Do you stand on a ladder to take those, or just reach up with the camera, etc?

Awesome report! And even more awesome army painting.

As to the question on the death ray, I have no idea, at my LGS there are 3 ways to play it,

1) like jaws of the werewolf (but with its profile instead duh)

2) it cannot target put wounds on models in combat

3) pick it up and chuck it across the room

Hope this helps.

lol !
See guys the reason other people never get a free DP is because they ignore the fluff and bring 3 helldrakes!
The gods are watching!

That lord/DP munched its way through 2 squads and 2 lords!
This was the first game that I really used mindshackle scarabs and AbrbitorIan managed to pass every single mindshackle test!!
I need to give my lords the 2+ save and/or the invulnerabilty upgrades. But they start to get expensive!
I guess I was dealing with ArbitorIans big deathstar unit and I'm happy it got bogged down with 5 turns of 'we'll be back' robot bashing!

For the top down photos I stand on a stool. (we get asked this all the time lol )

For this game I used my iPhone for all the photos because I couldn't find my regular cameras charger! the iPhone was actually pretty easy to use and got the job done!
my usual compact camera has a wide angle lens and gets the whole table in from about 3 feet above the table.
the iphone was having trouble fitting every thing in, so I used a £7 fish eye lens from ebay It gets all of the table into the photo and explains the funky barrel distortion and blur! .

There were 100+ photos of this game, I deleted the very bad ones, and duplicates.. and ended up with about 90 usable photos.
I then group photos together using a framing app so that I have less files to upload, for this batrep there were about 40 files.

Its a cardboard mat from Warsmith. It was a kickstarter but I believe it's going into production soon.
Its actually four 3'x2' boards that can be swapped around to change the layout.
Each of the 4 warboard sections folds up small into a carry case. these can then sits on the shelf next to my rule books.
Each board is double sided, so I can also play a custom dungeon adventure or space hulk type game on the back!

The entire 6x4 tabletop fits into these boxes! BRB for size comparison.

Okay, So heres what the war board is and does.

The Warboard is an innovative, quick, easy, attractive and cost effective playing area for 28mm tabletop wargaming that folds down in to something about the size of a few stacked magazines or rule books.

And its almost ready to go into production now!

Warboard Mid Fold

Warboard Mid Fold
Each Warboard is constructed of 2mm solid board, is double sided and folds out to 2' by 3' gaming area (61cm x 91.5cm), so two boards makes 3' by 4', four generates 4' by 6' and so on. Each side of the board is printed with a different option, these options are explained further down the page. The innovative patten designs means that there is no limit to how many board you can join together. One Warboard can be combined with others in the range to generate beautifully diverse battlefields with an almost infinite combination of orientation options. So you can keep your battlefield layouts fresh, diverse and engaging with minimal fuss!

4 Cityscape Warboards used together generating a 4'x6' battlefield

4 Cityscape Warboards used together generating a 4'x6' battlefield

2 Corridor pattern Warboards generating a 3'x4' playing area

2 Corridor pattern Warboards generating a 3'x4' playing area

Every Warboard is crammed full of detail and texture, from garbage and chemicals spills to tyre tracks and spent shell casings, all printed at 300dpi+ with a quality satin (improved from silk to satin) finish for protection.

I think It's fairly good value for the money £70.
It seems hard wearing so far... only two games on it so far so hard to tell!

Like all game surfaces it's has its pros and cons.
Cheaper and Easier to transport than any of the plastic boards and the layout isn't set in stone like the single piece rollup mats.
