There are some people who would never eat at a Taco Bell. The fast food chain’s executives know this and they won’t bother trying to convince them otherwise. But how about enjoying a meal at U.S. Taco? Sounds better, right? U.S. Taco is the chain’s new alter-ego American-inspired restaurant (as opposed to Mexican-inspired, which is how company reps describe Taco Bell’s offerings.)

The first U.S. Taco opens this summer in Huntington Beach, California, not far from Taco Bell headquarters. “I would love one day to see 1,000 of these,” Taco Bell chief executive Greg Creed told the Orange County Register. “But let’s not get that far ahead of ourselves. We’re opening a restaurant and seeing what happens.”

U.S. Taco won’t be selling burritos. Or Doritos Locos tacos. There won’t be any Crunchwrap Supremes or Taco Waffles. No drive-throughs, either. The restaurant will make 10 kinds of premium tacos (priced at $4 each), spicy thick-cut fries, and shakes (some infused with alcohol a la John Steinbeck). One taco, the “Winner Winner,” features Southern-style fried chicken breast with “SOB,” or “South of the Border” gravy. The “One Percenter” has fresh lobster in garlic butter with red cabbage slaw and pico de gallo on crispy fry bread.

Upscale Taco Bell, the Fast Food wars must be around the corner.

I already thought of Taco Bell as being American inspired, not Mexican inspired.

Mexican food tastes like food.

This sounds delicious. I wonder if, as with regular Taco Bell, it will make me need the 3 seashells immediately.

We'll find out soon enough eh.

ummm... I somehow get the feeling like it will still be crap that gives everyone the craps.

mucho burrito and taco del mar are ok,

but the best food is the food you make yourself.

I learned the secrets of mexican cooking, and my god, you have not lived until you make some spicey bacon beef tacos with queso sauce mixed with saracha and sour cream.

Having a sense of social justice and a pathological disgust at the way some elements of society feel the need not just to entrench their success, deserved or otherwise, by corrupting the political process but also to make a virtue out of rubbing that success in the faces of the less fortunate is not "hipster-rage".

I dunno. That's what I'd call it.

I'd eat a lobster taco. As long as it was Maine lobster, and exclusively tails and claws.

Why?

No, I'm not trolling, I genuinely want to know your reasoning. The perspective of people who'll defend that sort of grotesque delight at the thought of other people struggling is something I just can't grasp, and if you can't understand how people arrive at positions you disagree with you can never hope to successfully argue the point.

I think you're taking the moniker of a lobster taco a little too seriously.

There was a Taco Bell in Shanghai (could still be there) that served alcohol and used linen napkins and metal eating utensils. Pricey too if memory serves....

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

The demolition man prophecy came true before the DVD hit our shores.

In the theatrical cut we got, ALL restaurants were Taco Bell.

Then Taco Bell sprang up.

When the DVD hit our shores some 4-5 years later (yeah, it was a slow one, considering it was a region ported (from R2-R4, since we use a very similar PAL system), ALL the logos and mentions of TB were replaced with Pizza Hut.

And TB is now only a faded memory for some of us.

In Oz, Pizza Hut, DID win the franchise wars.

Never experienced Taco Bell. I think it's only London that gets the pleasure here in the UK.

I did recently experience something glorious that would perhaps be an equivalent? Pinto.

http://www.pintomexican.com/

Appears to be Scotland's, well Glasgow's, answer to quick and easy Mexican food.

It's absolutely dynamite. Had the Barbacoa beef burrito with some kind of salsa, sour cream and cheese. Absolutely fantastic.

Looking forward to swinging by again, perhaps get a wee beer to, as one of their shops is licensed.
