Why? Because the BRB says only "units" can focus fire?
But page 3 says "a single, powerful model, such as a lone character, a tank, a war engine or a rampaging monster, is also considered to be a unit in its own right."

Why not?
Horus Heresy and 40k use the same rules and they're certainly more fair than Reaver titans.

Seems like a unit that is constantly bunched up from repeated deep strikes is an OMG Wyverns are awesome story waiting to happen. Or plasma cannons. If you get a couple blasts into the cents that unit is mostly ruined and they're the guys he can't look out Sir! For.

Primarchs in 40k are tough but certainly not broken. They can go down easy enough.
I'm going to take 3 legion vindicators with POTMS a spartan, two lascannon mortis contemptors and a fire raptor. (i'm focussing so much on this unit because once it dies the rest of the army will be quite straightforward to deal with. That is hopefully 2 vindicator pie plates coming down, 8TL lascannon shots from dreads and spartan, and then deep striking a fire raptor behind the cents so they get shot first with 12TL heavy bolter shots, 7 mega bolter shots and a hellstrike rocket. I will likely take a plasma tac support squad to drop pod in behind and fire a rapid fire a 10 shot volley into the cents.
and if the spartan is in range, which is doubtful, it can charge in the cataphractii terminators and praetor

you're right, there's even stuff about blast in focus fire rules. I take back my previous statement.

Who prevents you from keeping a 6' distance?
Or you could use IG allies. They got a bit worse 5+ armor vs gravgunz but you can get a ton of them and probably fearless. But TFC is an issue for blobz. The moment you loose your comissar or priest - blob goes down.

blobs would probably suffer as he also takes 4 DKOK quad gun things and two vindicators. As much as I do love orks, I couldn't take them in a templars army as it clashes too much from a fluff perspective for me.
I'm pretty set on trying this legion list, ill hopefully play him next week so I can let you know.
Praetor in cataphractii armour with paragon blade and vigil shield
5 cataphractiis with vigil shields and thunderhammers
Landraider redeemer
Cataphractii wtih vigil shields and reaper autocannon
(5)tac support squad with 4 volkite culverins
(9)tac support with 8 plasma guns and one plasma pistol
Fire raptor
3 vindicators with POTMS
2 contemptor mortis TL lascannon dreads
Tactics:
Turn 1 9 man plasma squad drop podding in behind them with 17 plasma shots into the centurions (which are the main cause of concern for me).
If that doesn't kill them - then massed vindicator focus firing on them as they get 36 inch range with POTMS.
Hopefully that should be enough, or at least to kill tigirius so they dont GOI around the board.
The landraider can race towards them if needed or with everything else looking towards the rest of the army.

Focus fire doesn't work on the squad if it Deepstrikes into or moves into cover. Yes, he gets dangerous checks but it's 1's to fail the test and 1's to fail the armour for the majority of the squad. If the deathstar is in cover the 5+ jink is the same as a 5+ area terrain. That isn't a viable solution. However, the enemy has to notice this and play smart. You can exploit it but smarter generals will know already. That being said, you have to know this trick in order to exploit it, so I'm glad someone at least suggested it. The bike in the front is annoying for tanking shots so you'll need mobile AP2+. If he's porting around, he'll leave the squad vulnerable to different angles of fire. I would vote, shoot all your AP2 at it and it will go down. It will have forewarning a majority of the time. Either from Tiggy's 3 powers that he can and will reroll into a '2" for Forewarning, or Coteaz will get it. If you shoot it before psychic powers great, but they will probably be from the front and tanked by CM. CM sucks to deal with, but he can die. The problem comes when he starts passing wounds off. Try not to hurt the CM, but shooting at it from every other angle and it will die. It's about 785** points of his army, but once it dies, he won't be wiping a full squad or vehicle per turn. The chapter master could even break off and slaughter a squad on it's own late in the game when he kills off some of your AP2 firepower. Ignoring it will just prove to be a bigger problem when he can start killing two squads on Turn4 and Turn5. Edit**: Centurions 270 (assuming 3 Gravs, 1 Missiles for extended range, and Omniscope for Nightfighting) Chapter Master 250 (assuming all goodies + Thunderhammer) Tiggy (165) and Coteaz (100)

Hey, really late to the party, but I took a 40k break at the start of 7th. Just looking at getting back into it, and was checking various Google searches to see if my old deathstar still worked in the new edition, and I came across this post.
Haha - quite an honour to see that so many people were trying to help optometris defeat me and my little unit. We had some fun games, and I must be honest, I don't think we played a game post the focus fire revelation, so he never got to try it. Suffice to say, I wouldn't have been expecting it. Cheeky tactic, but one that would have def put me on the back foot. Those legion lists can get redicilous, with primarchs and sigismund and all the special rules they confer, but it was always fun.
Gonna get back into game again now, so perhaps I can find another nails unit for people to try and break?
Happy new year.
