I apologize in advance to the mods if they feel this should be elsewhere, I didn't really know where to put it.

Last week's WD (the one that came out on the 19th of April to be exact) featuring a converted Imperial Guard faction in the Paint Splatter section (which was why I picked up the WD, I wanted ideas for basing using the texture paints as an option) that at first made me think they were Praetorian conversions due to the red jackets but looking at them some more I think they look a bit more Hessian instead. So I'm picking your brain Dakka to find out more about these guys. They look snazzy with the Empire Outrider heads but I have no idea who they're supposed to be, or anything else about them. Does anyone else known?

They're just Cadians with head swaps, if they were in WD they'll be pure GW, so I'd suggest looking in the Empire section of WHFB for the heads.

Oh I already know where the heads came from (as I pointed out in the original post they're from the Outriders box) I want to know more about this mystery regiment and if it has a name or any kind of fluff.

Yup, from that box:

Doesn't really answer who the regiment is though.

It's just made up, the only ones who have any real established background you've likely already heard of.

I'm not THAT familiar with Imperial Guard fluff actually. The only ones I'm aware of are in the current codex, plus Praetorians. I know GW has made/referenced things in the past so I am just trying to find out if it's one of those things they made up and then never talked about again.

Well, I've been kicking around since second, I have a specific blind spot through third and fourth, but, to my knowledge, they're not modelled after anything "official" I've ever seen.

Someone may be able to contradict me, but only Steel Legion have really emerged since the first codex as a distinct new flavour, although these guys could well be based in a bit of art from a book somewhere I'm not aware of.

Vostroyans came out in 4th IIRC (I recall reading some complaints from old board posts about them coming out instead of supporting other regiments in plastic), but fair enough. I've got a number of blind spots on stuff so I figured picking some brains might help.

Just on a lark I sent it into Customer Service to ask about it, maybe it's based on art, maybe it's original, either way I guess they can ask the WD team and just find out.

Those are some pimping Cadian models. It really shows you the potential of the kit if they got rid of those goofy helmets. If I had to guess they are probably homebrew but a really nice homebrew at that.

I rather like Vostroyans as a concept but the all metal aspect is starting to wear on me quickly. I'm sadly starting to consider Cadians just for the fact that they have all their options available and I don't have to work really hard to convert everything.

I honestly blame the last 5 years I've spent dealing with Sisters models. Metal models just aren't appealing to me anymore because of it.

I enjoy working with metal in terms of building and painting, but it's a dog to alter in any way.

I've got a load of Diaznettes for my daemons, which never came with a command set, and I really should get around to making an icon bearer, musician and champion (despite I seldom actually equip them, all my other lesser daemons have them) but I just CBA.

The way paint so easily rubs off drives me nuts. Especially when it does it as I'm painting the model.

Also I was wrong in my assessment earlier, the conversion doesn't seem to be Hessian inspired but Prussian:

First up the helmets:

And then the choice of using helms with feathers seem to be a call back to the plumes and birds:

So....Space Prussians (perhaps)?

Yep, or possibly based off the Queens Household Cavalry?

As for metal, prime better and varnish, won't end your woes, but will mitigate them a lot (and by prime better, a good quality polyurethane primer, not just paint in a can)

Well the household calvary doesn't wear white pants, but maybe.

And I've used good primers in the past, but the local selection here sucks (I used to prime using Krylon's Ultra Flat Black Camouflage Paint. Stuff is GREAT but impossible to find locally) and I can't seem to find anything that really does the trick well. A LOT of spray paints designed for plastic though (welcome to the middle of nowhere unfortunately).

When you've hundreds of years of military history, your regiments are allowed to wear more than one colour of trouser!

Those models were out of an older White Dwarf magazine, back around when the latest 40k rulebook was released. They were made from someone in white dwarf as part of a battalion challenge.
IIRC the creator hadn't designed any background just that he liked the conversions.
And they do look bloody good.

i think the cover of the magazine had a Ultramarine standing solo on it.
It was a while ago though.

They popped up in WD for 19 April 2014 on the Paint Splatter page as well, but with no captions or anything explaining things.

Also I found it. There are a few more shots in there as well. For those who want more inspiration from these guys here they are below:

If I recall correctly a guy in the painting studio made these guys, named Chris Peach. If you google his name plus Imperial Guard you'll get some shots of models from a previous White Dwarf.

I am so stealing that idea for my Great Crusade era AM army. It's just so silly and over the top. It fits the Imperium during that time to a T.
