Shouldnt be too much of a problem. You can always Google the area around the school and see what FLGS are there. I live a few miles from MSU and there is 1 shop in walking distance from campus and 2 others if you want to drive all of 15 minutes.

Now with 100% more blog....

How do you store your models now? Are they in a case or something? Closet? Scattered out all over?

Generally, your cases should be enough. Most dorms (at least when I went to college) had individual closets, as well as storage space under the beds. Your college/dorm may have storage rooms with various degrees of access but YMMV on that one.

Colleges have a good batch of gaming going on, but studies need to be priority. I have it on firsthand knowledge that some of the wrong classes, picked in conjunction, PLUS gaming can lead to heartache and empty wallet of epic proportions.....

You have to scale the hhhobby down, then to the playing. On my end, I've scaled down to platoon scale, or skirmish level games. Pokémon is in fashion there, though, as well as Harry Potter's combat Quidditch and other fine feature sports, such as zombie fighting with Nerf Guns, and zombie walks... as well as comics and card games.

Trust me, there is also the fabled Sorority Row death crawl as well......

40K is fun, but College girls are funner, especially armed with... a nerf sword and a sniper rifle.

Or you can get in shape with a little more of an... incentive then just a medal...

And you thought your tuition paid for books.......

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

Can your cases fit under a bed? Many dorm rooms have under-bed storage and that would keep enticing cases away from prying eyes. I'd also recommend some locks for your cases and or locks to keep your cases in place (where ever you decide to store them in your dorm) as things can wander off in shared living situations.

I moved countries and it was easy, just use dakka to find people that play at the place you wind up.

feth me, its not rocket science, if you enjoy the hobby, you WILL find a way to keep it going, its not as rare as rocking horse gak either, I arranged a few games with some lads in the new city I showed up in and thats it.. good to go.

Im sure there will be at least a handful of guys who play at your college, just make contact and Bobs your uncle. Thanks to the internet, this gak is easy to do nowadays, and if a funny looking ill-tempered midget like me can befriend wargaming strangers in a foreign nation, I'm sure you can do it in college.

feth me, you don't even have to ship your models over! I had to cram all my gak into my luggage and when I emigrated with 4 pairs of socks and three t-shirts (clothes are cheaper than minis!) the bloke in immigration looked at me like I had just forgone the passport and placed my testicles in the fingerprint scanner.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

I’d suggest leaving the bulk of your army at home for a bit. There are a lot of distractions on campus, and your studies should come first. Your paints and a few projects should fit in a small box, which you can work on as time permits.

Once you get settled in, scout out the area for a new FLGS. Hang out, chat with the guys, etc. Then the first break you go home, you can pick up your stuff and bring it to college and play some games. By that time you should have a good idea of space available, and what size and types of games the local play. You should also have an idea of how much time you will have to dedicate to the hobby. I had a couple of friends fail out due to not being able to manage fun vs. study time; don’t be that guy.

I’d toss out the old boilerplate about getting out and doing college social things while you can, but it would be very hypocritical for me to do so. The Wife is the sister of a gaming buddy I met at the FLGS, who was a townie. So my marriage is indirectly the result of me eschewing the traditional college antics, and instead gaming with the locals.

Ya either have enough room or ya don't. You need to see what you need and are bringing, and what your roommate is bringing (don't expect a female/male pairing if it's campus sponsored, affiliated, or owned), and then see how much room you have left. You're going to have a space premium most likely.

In short, you need to talk with your roommate. I am a Hall Director and having worked Residence Life many years will tell you that all it boils down to is physical space and talking to your roommate to get their thoughts on who gets what space. Same as anything else regarding space.

How far are you from home? I would try and split between stuff you keep at home and stuff you keep at school. Although make sure your parents don't throw it out....

Do you have a car? And are you allowed to have it on campus? (some colleges forbid freshmen cars on campus) Because a 2 hour drive is nothing. Take the minimum amount of stuff to live, and do a quick trip back on a weekend to grab what you want later.

If you have everything in cases, you could even ask your mom to bring it up on parent’s weekend.

Probably best to keep everything mobile and store able.

like 1 case or two for a 1500,2000 points army that you like to play the most, and a tool box that can fit your general paint equipment and bits.

that way you can scoot everything away when company comes.

I wouldn't being them at all, especially with home being so close. Go up there, have fun, and determine if there's actually a gaming scene first.

But more so.... Go do college things.

Put down the dice, focus on school, girls and partying in that order. Then next year maybe start playing 40k again. Or wait until you get that 1st job out of college and start playing again @ 10 edition.

Just my 2c worth.

Ok, Guys know this. For the past 4 years I have been balancing hobbies and school. I know when to study and when to play. this "Focus on school" is something I know about. Also, I hate partying, I tried it once and I ended up hating it.

Go to mixers. Go to parties. Play fisbee gold. Play ultimate frisbee. Lay on the quad listening to music. Sneak onto a golf course. Rush a fraternity. Go to a rugby match. Join a club. Chase girls. Go to a my-tie event. Get high. Get high and play tony hawk for 3 hours. Go to a bar. Play beer pong. Play quarters. Go to a campus play. Go to a womens volleyball match. Go play sand volleyball. Go dick around on the beach. Go biking. Go jogging. Join crossfit.

I mean, i can go on if youd really like.

Or i could sum it up by saying "experience college."

I'm not at college, but I'm in a house with 5 other people, so I can kind of relate.

Keep everything easy to move, bring only what you "need", and just keep in mind that the more you bring, the more hassle it will be when you're moving around

Just because you're going to college doesn't mean you have to give up your hobby. I wouldn't buy much while you're at college, but there's nothing wrong with doing some painting after a long day. My roomates and I have an understanding at this point that if the paint is out, I need to chill out for a bit. Some guys go to the gym, some play music, and I paint.

Just don't forget to enjoy college while you're there. You'll always have a chance for war hams later, college will only be a few years.

And it goes without saying that schoolwork comes first

I'm not going to give you college advice, since
1) You never asked for it
2)Its patronizing as hell
3)You've already done community college
4)Everybody and their brother seems intent on giving it to you any way.

However, if, as you said, you really like the painting and modeling aspect of the hobby, I would highly recommend a painting/modeling station. I don't have, and haven't tried GW's new one, but I have their older wooden one and it's very nice for keeping an 'active project' easily accessible. You still want to store all of your stuff in your cases otherwise, but the paint station lets you keep your current paints, brushes, and projects out to work on in spare time, plus you can pick it up and move it (say, from the desk to the bed if you need to study, or from the bed to the desk for sleeping). It will give you a lot more hobby time than getting out your current project each time you want to work on it.

My main concern would be stashing it away properly when not in use, so that no A-holes would make themselves funny and ruin the stuff. I'm not saying you should hide your hobby, absolutely not. But I would definitely keep it behind lock when I'm not around.

Also, good on you for doing what you want to do instead of follow trends

Google for something like this:
"Edinburgh Table Easel".
You'll need to be able to store your stuff, and probably shift it out of the way fast.
Bitz boxes would be useful for more than just modelling stuff:
"Compartments Storage Organiser".
