Hey Dakka,

I has recently revisited my Space Marines and am going to be running them as Iron Hands. I have a few questions as to what I should add. I have my heart set on adding a 5 man Sternguard Squad w/ Heavy Flamer, 2x Combi-Melta's and Sergeant has a Combi-Plasma.\

What is dakka's opinions on Clan Raukaan? Is it worth it? Should I swap the Shield Eternal for Gorgon's Chain?

What else should I add to make this viable. Another Stormtalon and take the Adeptus Astartes Storm WIng Formation?

Help me out guys.

Currently I have:

Chapter Master w/ Artificer Armour + Bike + Shield Eternal + Thunder Hammer

5 man Space Marine Bikes w/ 2x Grav Guns

10 man Tactical Squad in Rhino w/ Missile Launcher + Meltagun

10 man Tactical Squad in Rhino w/ Missile Launcher + Meltagun

5 man Assault Terminator Squad w/ 3x TH+SS, 2x LC

Stormtalon Gunship w/ Skyhammer Missile Launcher

Stormraven Gunship w/TL MM + TL Lascannon

3 man Centurion Squad w/ Grav-Cannons + Grav-Amps + ML + Omniscope

Vindicator w/ Siege Shield

Thanks

Robbo.

Your Sternguard unit is too unfocused. It's better to have the same kind of weapons to deal with a problem. 2 meltas+3 combi are better vs vehicles, 2 plasmas+3 combi are better vs MCs/Heavy Infantry (FnP helps here) while 2 Heavy Flamers + 3 combi deal with hordes. mixing weapons in a unit that doesn't possess split fire or akin abilities isn't optimal.

Gorgon's Chains are better than Shield Eternal, specially if you can attach him into a command squad with an Apothecary. Give the Veterans some grav-guns and then charge enemy MCs, as they'll strike at Init 1 (Concussive on gravs). If you're near losing EW, start making LoS! rolls.

I like the Aerial formation; you can put your grav -squad there and deploy with Skies of Fury near the enemy. The Termies are better in a Land Raider to carry them (or DS them to create a diversion); the LCs aren't a good choice - I'd go full TH/SS

I was looking for an all round Sternguard. Any other suggestions?

Yeah. I am going to run Clan Raukaan I think.

The LC's are already glued on. :/

I run Iron Hands also so welcome to our side!

What i would do is decide how you want to focus your army.

Do you like running alot of armour? Then make sure everyone has a transport and add some firepower in the forms of a stalker for AA, and a pair of lascannon predators for anti tank/mc.

Like the speed and mobility of bikes? Run an all bike list, but dont forget your AA. Again I like to use the stalker for this.

What about a crushing alpha strike? Then stick everyone in pods and drop doom onto your foes. Just remember to keep your number of pods odd so you can maximize your alpha.

Basically what im getting at is have a direction you want to take your list in. What I can see that you lack are more troops, at 1999pts i run 5 full tac squads so I have ten scoring units. Also i feel the shield eternal is way more beneficial to your cm than the gorgons belt.

And finally, i have to agree with vector strike by saying to have one type of combi in your sternguard. I personally use meltas to good effect but just pick a type and stick with it.

By the way you can always carefully cut the lascannons off.

Better allocate the weapons on those Sternguard. You want 2 or 3 of the same combiweapons per 5 Sternguard bodies (I personally go with combi-meltas because Sternguard have the tools to deal with pretty much every other unit type). By splitting their combi-weapons into different types, you're not making them more versatile. You're simply making them suck against multiple target types.

But there is only 2x Combi Meltas in the box.

See if your local game store has a bitz box, you can usually find some good stuff in there.

You can always make your own from combining a melta gun with bolter, cut barrels off and position. Put a cable on bolter too and no one can tell the difference.

I post with autochange, from my not so smartphone.

The biggest thing with Gorgon's Chain is that it doesnt take a hand, so you can take a lightning claw, get +1 attack and have the option to strike at init 5 against 3+ save guys.

especially for Ironhands, I think some conversion for combi meltas is required. To show how each is a unique artifact.

There are a lot of conflicting statements in this thread about sternguard, often within the same post.

If you just need 2-3 combis of a given type then having 2 combis of 2 different types is not going to make your unit suck vs multiple targets.

However I do agree with 1 poster: Combi-meltas(4 of them) are the way to go, paired with a regular melta. The sternguard special ammo deals with every unit type other than vehicles. You fire 2 combis and the regular melta at one vehicle, and the other 2 plus regular melta at another; The 4 members with combis also shoot at other unit types(well so does the melta but he is more a bonus shot).

5 combi meltas at a single tank is wasteful; 3 melta shots should do the trick.

While I do love the Heavy Flamer, it rarely fits with the rest of the sternguard.

This is my Rulebook. There are many Like it, but this one is mine. Without me, my rulebook is useless. Without my rulebook, I am useless.
Stop looking for buzz words and start reading the whole sentences.

Thank you, its just a waste of points to give sternguard a heavy flamer when your paying for special ammo.
