Anyone ever consider using the platoon standard bearers as priests? If you're like me you will have built a ton of them simply because they look cool, despite their rules being bad (the exception being a regimental standard, but you only get one of those). I figured a rousing flag never falling in battle should be able to entice some acts of devotion out of the men, and if they're vostroyan the flag bearer can beat the crap out of them! I actually have some priests models, but I'm always looking to make the boys look more dynamic (plus there's not a lot of variation in their sculpts)

I wouldn't do it myself because there are just too many wonderful opportunities to model up priests as priests.

If we plonked down for a game, and you said "these flag dudes are my priests" I wouldn't have a problem with it.

While it might be slightly confusing because there are flags in a normal AM army, I can understand the fluff behind your argument. I personally wouldn't have a problem with it as long as you explained at the beginning of the game, like Ailaros said.

If you're going to do that, I would avoid bringing a regimental or platoon standard in your command squads. That way it cuts down on confusion and all you have to say is "every flag bearer is a priest".

That way the other player can just look down at a glance and immediately know where the priests are.

It's a pretty cool idea, I'd be game for it. I'd rather model actual priests because there's so many cool priest models, but I could see that working well with armies like the Vostroyans and Mordians, who don't seem like the kind of unit that would get too riled up from a priest's words.

"Brothers! Let us deign versimilitude upon those obsequious of righteousness!"

"What the tarnation did that fancy pants just go on about?"

"Don't know, just fight harder, already, will ya?"

You could use a drum too if you're playing one of the more black powder/medieval style armies. It's what I am going to for my IG army.

@Chootum: that's fantastic!

@OP: Flag-bearers are a cool idea, especially if you have heraldry for each unit.

Every Platoon in IG army has its second Sergeant holding the platoon standard aesthetics wise, since I never buy it for the PCS. Makes the chain of command anomaly a bit less silly with multiple Sergeants running around, at least then I can imagine its a more a corporal holding the standard.

I think Priests are cool enough as they are and the variation and opportunity they provide to an army is pretty nice.

I wanted to do something similar with flagbearers instead of vox casters, but it would have been tough to do with my metal Valhallans. Personally I dig this idea, and as long as you're not taking platoon/company standards in command squads it shouldn't confuse anybody.

You could also use different styles of flags. Buy some Bret flags and use those as your Regimental/Platoon Standard.

Nay, nay forsooth, however on the contrary one should not overlook it when one should be so whimsical, alas, it is merely jocular

I second the notion that it should be a blanket rule. "All flags are priest" Works a lot better than "This, this, and this flag are priest, but this and this flag are not."

agreed, and i have like 6 and i almost never buy regimental standards (although they do have their place) And best of all, there are plenty of cool flags to use out there! This will finally be an opportunity for Helmut, the lone Kriegsman in my army, and survivor of Tarsis Ultra, to wave his banner proudly! (and to beat the men into total submission if they do not excel, even the commissars think he's applying the rules too strongly) =P
