As far as I know Games day in the UK in it's current format is no more.

The idea is to refit Warhammer World and have ticketed events there instead.

That way they can have more seminars and give Golden Daemon a higher profile as it just isn't all that successful in its current format.

To be honest having been to quite a few ticketed events at Warhammer World such as Black Library live, FW Open day etc I think this is a much better way of doing it.

I haven't really thought Games Day has been worth the money for a long time, after all it's just a trade event now that you have to pay to get into!!

I go to Salute in London every year and it's sad but that is exactly what Games Day used to be like, and for £11 plus goody bag it really is good value for money.

I have no idea how this will work in the rest of the World though as the UK is the only place that has a Warhammer World.

GW also do hotel events like the big Black Library events, so maybe they will go down this route for Golden Daemon?

WW events will be the future, it would just be nice if they gave us a rough heads up if golden demon is happening or not as it would be nice to know I am not doing entries in vain

I would imagine Golden Demon will still go ahead, otherwise, that's 1/3rd of their Warhammer Visions magazine gone. (The interesting 1/3rd as well).

Currently most played: Silent Death, Mars Code Aurora, Battletech, Warcrow and Infinity.

Hopefully, they'll get the lighting sorted this year. From last year's reports, the miniatures were almost displayed in the dark! It was very amateurish on GW's part, and a kick in the groin for people who'd probably spent months painting their entries.

Don't worry - there are plenty of great conventions which are healthy...and growing. Even more focused events like ReaperCon have increased in size and attendance in the last few years that it more than makes up for things.

I have fond memories of Games Day's past, I've been to many and loved them all. I'm disappointed by this news, but not really surprised. IMO seeing a long running event such as Games Day disappear is a telling sign of the poor state GW has put themselves in.

Or Gencon, Comic-con, Games Con, Pax, All other places that give us better stuff and don't offer ludicrous expensive stuff that could bankrupt you.

I'm worried about that also, every year each country with gamesdays displayed tons of entries on golden deamons and those flooded the net and also on the WD, visions, GW site etc.
Without these events the few remains of the GW hobby are extinct and the hobby in general is poorer. Regardless of Crystal brushes and Salute etc Golden deamon was always something that motivated hundreds of painters to participate.
I do not understand a company that position itself as selling minis to collectors and then refuses to display their collections in a wider arena.

This is a major reduction in hobby content at GW. Not a good thing.

I will really miss Golden Daemon, it was always so inspiring seeing the paint jobs and dioramas shown in it. That and the Games Days in different countries provide a unique array of paint styles and techniques.

Alas, it is very sad.

Wow, that sucks.

I remember going to the first GD in the USA that was held at the VFW hall. I think it was in Owings Mills, MD.

I was planning on going to GD this year to have the studio look at some of my sculpts.

I was thinking of re-applying for a studio sculpting position and wanted some feedback from them.

Well I actually went to games day last year here and entered the Golden Demon. I actually thought it was the best Games day i have been to!
1st there were far less hordes of screaming kids.
2nd I never went to Games day to play Games, I went to see people & learn more about the hobby.
3rd the Forge World semina was awesome! Tony Cotrill had me in tears at points he was so funny.
4th Forge World stand was awesome with some very cool models on display including pre release stuff.
5th Forge world event only models (Games Day model was terrible but I'm not into fantasy)
6th Great studio & Eavy metal presence, got to chat some great members of the team.
7th Met up with some old friends & leave the arena for lunch in a pub which beat the captive audience prices usually charged at the NEC.
8th Guest stands like FF were good too and added something a little more diverse.

They really could have had the demon upstairs as the lighting downstairs was terrible. They could have lost retail really unless they wanted to sell pre release stuff or offer a discount but I do save up some money for games day so others might still want to buy stuff but I mainly buy online now for anything from the shop. Free pick up instead of 12% delivery from Forge World is worth it's weight in gold and now they have listened and allowed you to pay in advance for an order and pick it up away from the on the day sales it works very smoothly!

All in all I am one of the few who thought as an adult it was a better day.

Discuss.....

Interesting. So to sum up: you liked GD because it featured Forge World, no kids and you ate at the pub next door... You know FW goes to other events right?

I think point 6 is a good one. I guess it all comes down to whether you had been to previous GD (or any other shows), how much disposable income you have and how easy you are to please. We are all going to be at different points along the curve in that graph..

My main reason for attending Games Day rather than events was Golden Demon which I enter each year, if this becomes a stand alone event like it used to be way back when, held at Warhammer World or wherever I will be even happier. I did like having people to talk to and some cool displays to see whilst I was waiting for the judging to complete.

I have attended the Forge World open day and done Throne of skulls too at Warhammer World and would agree that these more focused events are better than the shot gun cover all areas events.

As for the graph I am slipping back down it now as I have just had my first daughter and a second due shortly, both time and money seem to have evaporated!

I also went to Salute this year and had a great time, thanks to the Warlords for putting that on! I hear Colours has been cancelled this year which is a shame, I really enjoyed last years event at Newbury.

Better to sit quietly and look the fool than to open your mouth and confirm the fact!

I have to give GW some credit above MTV.

MTV changed it's name when there stopped being music on the channel.

GW cancelled Games Day when there stopped being actual games at the event.
