First off, this is not an attempt to be sarcastic, but is a genuine thread. It is also not an attempt to ingratiate myself with the mods in order to make myself somehow 'banproof'.

I've been on the wrong side of the mods a couple of times [too many glasses of wine and 40k General = trouble] but I've always found them to deal with any silliness firmly but with good humour. They have always been open to discussion about the issue and show a real sense of reluctance at having to issue sanctions.

So, it's a bit of a thankless task, but I think the Dakka mods are doing a great job.

Anyone else got any positive mod stories?

Being a mod is a thankless job (unless you're getting paid, and that's not a great thanks) that tends to leave you not feeling liked. It's just part of life with being a mod. No matter what you do, according to someone you're either too lenient, or too harsh. Or more likely both at the same time somehow. It's an interesting experience if you ever have the chance. And in my experience, one in which if everyone likes you, you're doing your job wrong (and the forums usually go to hell).

That being said, yes the mods here are a pretty fair bunch.

The mods don't suffer suck ups. Prepare to be BANED!

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Probably the main reason why I like this site so much, there's no real bias for or against certain discussions or game systems.

Hmm... well I've only been warned once (insaniak busted me for spam on 25th July 2011). Does that count?

Joking aside, no, I've never had any quarrels with the Mods (not even insaniak) and I salute anyone who gives up their time to ensure a site like this doesn't descend into the realms of chaos.

Just like any board anywhere, mods here have their pet trolls who are allowed to get away with being overly sarcastic and condescending when responding to a post while anyone who responds on kind gets an infraction. We even have our pet troll (s) on another major board I moderate.

I think you'll find that most of the 'pet trolls' have had quite a few long vacations.

Literally Hitler.

I have no idea what would possess anyone to start a thread like this, but the board seems clean and I haven't seen any moderation, meaning they are doing a good job. You don't become a moderator for thanks, you do it because you are a neckbeard and think it is awesome power, or you want to support a community you like by giving something back.

Runnin up on ya.

DCMs are legally required to write nice things about Mods. Naw, they're a good lot who give up their free time to keep this board more or less moving in a sane direction.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

Dakkadakka is one of two forums I've been to where I'd say the moderation noticeably improves the board. There are a few little nitpicks, like Kid Kyoto breaking the rules of the N&R forum every year for April Fools, but compared to Warseer this place is great.

I think there are only a handful of posters who would rather not see those April Fools .. personally, I think it's the more light-hearted and generally genial attitude around here that separates it from some of the other, more po-faced boards.

Sometimes I am curious as to the way mods interpret and enforce the rules of conduct, but by and large it's been pretty enjoyable here.

It's certainly a damn sight better than most other forum sites I visit.

I think they are a bit lock happy with threads sometimes buy by enlarge they do a good job.

They are also very happy to disagree and argue with people without threatening mod powers. Unlike someplaces on the internet I haven't ever noticed them abuse their mod powers to win arguments.

Typically mods have been around a site long enough to have seen most regular conversations and arguments that crop up as well as regular combatants within the population. So sometimes they will swoop in and shut down threads before they get too far down the line of problems; or if a couple of regular fighters are having it out they'll shut it down rather than clean them out (in my experiences "cleaning" a thread of complaints is time consuming and often as not if its more than one or two posts even cleaning it won't generate a positive result).

Yeah when I see a thread being locked I have no idea how many reports of complaints posts from that thread has got there is a chance threads I have felt have been locked unduly have generated a large number of complaints or are threads that have been posted time and time again and always lead to nothing but arguments. I also realise that some people are way more are way more sensitive to what other people write than me and may report or complain about something that feels innocuous to me personally.

Me saying they are to lock happy is just saying that they sometimes lock threads that I didn't think needed to be locked at times rather than an objective statement they shouldn't have locked it. Hope that makes sense.
