Godamn that is hilarious. My favourite part in bold.

It's difficult t decide...
Gotta say those sailors have balls of steel for managing to make it through that.

I just imagine a Pirates of the Caribbean episode: Jack Sparrow with a constant expression or dismay and trying to hide and dodging about as his fellows are attacked, then quietly escaping on the life boat... by himself.
In all honesty the imagery of constant warfare with rats, snakes and alligators is just nasty.
A gorilla and the insane strength it has is scary all on it's own.
Hitting it with an axe only "stunning it" gives some indication.
Interesting story, I could just imagine down below or up in the rigging would be equally deadly.
Imagine if the gorilla got loose?
