Any time you transition to a new platform, there is the opportunity to look at things with a new perspective. For us at 343 Industries, the launch of the Xbox One was an opportunity to think about what stories we wanted to tell, how to tell them, and how best to push the “Halo” franchise to showcase the platform. And, most importantly, combining our passion for “Halo” with the vocal and informative input from our fans.

“Halo” isn’t simply a perennial game franchise, it’s a part of the Xbox platform itself. In terms of innovation and ideation, it’s sometimes important to people who might not even play “Halo.” And of course it’s a passion and an essential experience for two generations of gamers. So we asked ourselves, how do we begin and where do we go with “Halo” on Xbox One?

In the past, “Halo” games have pushed the Xbox forward, showcasing the console and its ecosystem in entertaining and innovative ways. Making a “Halo” game that runs at 60 frames per second, on dedicated servers, with the scope, features and scale we’ve been dreaming of for more than a decade, is non-trivial. It’s a task that we, at 343 Industries, are taking very seriously to ensure we deliver the “Halo” game that fans deserve, and a game that is built from the ground up for Xbox One.

I’m happy to reveal that “Halo 5: Guardians,” the next installment in the legendary saga of the Master Chief, will launch on Xbox One in fall of 2015. In the tradition of every “Halo” game since its debut in 2001, it is a massive and exciting project.

“Halo 5: Guardians” is a bigger effort than “Halo 4.” That applies to the content and scope of the game, as well as the technology in what’s now a brand new and more powerful engine. Certainly there are some core elements carried over from prior games, but we’ve invested a huge effort in retooling our tech to take full advantage of the Xbox One’s hardware and ecosystem to create worlds and experiences worthy of next-gen.

It’s a game that will hopefully demonstrate the talent, learnings and abilities of the 343 Industries team. A game that will incorporate the things we learned from “Halo 4” about technology, aesthetics, performance and scale – and perhaps more importantly, understanding and embracing a community of gamers who love what lies at the heart of this game, and the limitless potential of the “Halo” universe.

And 2015 won’t simply be the year of “Halo 5: Guardians,” it will also be a year that offers us a unique opportunity. The opportunity to invite old friends and new audiences into that universe through the “Halo” television series, launched as a unique collaboration with Steven Spielberg and some of the finest creative minds in the business. A series that will stand alone, as well as complement and enrich the game experience. We’ll have more to share on the “Halo” television series as we near its projected fall 2015 release.

Your Journey Begins in 2014

Many fans noted that I was very deliberate with my phrasing on stage at E3 last year. I spoke about a “journey,” rather than a destination – and that journey definitely begins in 2014 with a giant leap, rather than one small step. We’ll give you much more information about our plans for this year at the Xbox E3 2014 Media Briefing on June 9, and we’re confident that “Halo” fans will be pretty excited about the special plans we have in store.

So until E3, I’d like to express my gratitude to our massive and varied Halo community, whose energy, enthusiasm, criticism and kindness are the driving force behind what we do and what we hope to achieve in “Halo 5: Guardians.”

Another game I won't be getting because it won't be released on PC.

Sad. I like Halo, even if it doesn't have enough lasers.

Pretty much the same for me.

I've played and loved every Halo console game and I own all the novels. But I will not be getting it untill I can find an xbox one for 200 or less.

Is there really anything original left for them to do?

I haven't played a halo game since ODST. And that was a bit of a yawner.

I wonder if this game will kill you even if you step out of line even just a little. I mean, it is called Halo Guardians.

Master Chief was killed by the Game Title.

I still haven't played Halo 4, mainly due to my PC becoming my primary gaming platform. It's annoying that only CE was developed - or was it just ported with a few extras? - for PC, because I'm still a big fan of the franchise; I'm just not a big enough fan to buy a console exclusively to play it, and that extends to Nintendo consoles for TLoZ and Playstation for Ratchet & Clank - I really enjoy those franchises, too, but I'm not about to drop hundreds of pounds so I can play the one or two games that'll be released for that generation (or in Nintendo's case, one or ten games that are practically the same game over and over again).

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Hopefully by the time it is released the xbone will be somewhere close to reasonable in price.

Though I have to say I did not enjoy Halo 4 as much as I did the other games in the series - mostly because the enemies were so bloody annoying.

My favourite games were ODST and Reach, perhaps because they were different.

Eh, don't blame Halo for not being a PC console. They tried to make it a PC thing with Halo 1 and Halo 2, Halo 2 sold basically nothing on the PC.

That's probably due nominally to GfWL being ass, but still. Not Halo's fault.

Anyway... meh. The Halo story is over. I feel zero enthusiasm for the game.

Halo was always the game that people bought because they had an XBox due to no other alternatives. There was no reason for anyone to buy it on PC due to other games actually existing. Then, I guess some people started caring about the story.

Did anyone else have a problem with horrendous lag when playing online co-op? My friend and I never had a problem except for Halo 4 and Halo: CE Anniversary.

We both use wireless for our 360s but it is bizarre how we never had any problem except for when it comes to Microsoft's core series.

Story will no doubt be probably bad like Halo 4 and it's laughable last mission ease. I await the MP mostly.

In case anyone missed it:

"Guardians" is following two characters. Master Chief--and an ONI Agent, named "Locke" who is trying to find Chief.

Locke is confirmed to be the person standing above Chief in that piece of key art.

Yep. I think it'll be pretty interesting, myself, though I can see a lot of the Halo fans raging about it, as with armour abilities ("something different *gasp*").

The live action series has been given a name, too: Halo: Nightfall.

I'm sorry, but does anyone else think that the Spartans in the Halo 5 beta footage look really odd?

Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

UK

No, the Halo 4 Spartan IVs all had weird helmet designs, especially some of the multiplayer unlocks. In my opinion, it looks nowhere near as cool as the Mk 6 Miljnor armour Chief has. But those in the beta are Spartan IV helmets.

It seems Halo 5 will be a departure from all the other main-series games. Multiple playable characters is an idea I really don't like (the main games should be about Chief, it's his story after all) and for some reason, the fact the game has a title other than just Halo 5 bugs me.

At this point, I'm more disappointed by the fact I won't be getting Halo 2 Anniversary than Guardians. As much as 3 was my favourite of the original trilogy, and the Halo 1 anniversary re-skin was crap, the new graphics and mechanics on Halo 2 (and YES, welcome back Dual Wielding) look awesome, it's a shame I won't be getting it.

Also, the fact that the MC collection includes 'Nightfall' suggests it's something you'll have to buy even if you have a Gold subscription already. Does anyone else think this is a bit much, that you have to pay for the chance to pay for it? I was assuming it was going to be free to stream, as per Forward Unto Dawn.

Nightfall may very well be "free" to stream (as long as you have Gold), but perhaps it's added to the Collection on a disc, as an "extra"? We'll have to wait and see, I guess.

Because we haven't had multiple characters before right? Oh wait, Halo 2, arbiter.
