Was having this conversation with a mate the other day and thought I'd put it to the Dakka Community.

If you had to choose which Post-Apocalyptic video game universe you could reside in, which would it be and why?

I'd most likely choose the Fallout universe. Love all the early Fallout games due to the rich lore and the latest instalments are amongst my favourite games. I really loved how the more recent games by Bethesda could blend the bleakness of a post-apolalyptic world with enough instances where there was hope and human ingenuity shone through. Whenever I played the games i favoured Small Arms, Repair and Speech skills and a more diplomatic approach to various encounters.

Was thinking about making this a Poll but I figured there would no doubt be numerous environments that I hadn't experienced or forgot about, so throw your end of the world preferences at me!

Warhammer is the right of all sentient nerds!

Rage, or Borderlands.

Probably Rage. I love the Western setting, with all those cheesy characters.

Whilst I like many post apocalyptic video games, none spring to mind that I would actually want to live in.

Maybe... Deus Ex? Can we count that as post apocalyptic?

I think the Fallout series is the coolest, but there is no post-apocalyptic universe I would genuinely want to live in.

Tiberium Earth by Tiberian sun is a gak hole to the eleventh degree with tiberium mutated monsters running amuck, Ion storms tearing through cities, a grudge match between the last two polities on Earth looming/cyborg armies lead by a rampaging A.I assimilating everyone, an assimilative crystal giving carbon based life on earth a mere year to live unless the tacitus is found and translated, and constant ethnic riots between tiberium mutants and non-mutants.

Despite my love for Fallout, I think it'd be very different to actually live in, seeing as in real life I'm not a sharpshooting ninja with the greatest oratory talent since Cicero, and the ability to fix a chainsaw with a baseball bat...

I'd probably just end up being eaten by a deathclaw.

I'm going to go for this too.

If not, does the Metro 2033 world count? As much as I'd gak myself fighting horrifying mutants in a radiated wasteland, I could at least whittle the time away by fighting horrifying mutants in a radiated wasteland.

Fallout for sure. It's a very "soft" apocalypse as these things go. Lots of things that make no sense still happen for the sake of gameplay. It's 200 years post bombs, but we're still looting supermarkets for food? And the food is still good? And the shelves are still full?

Sign me up for that "apocalypse".

Mass Effect following a full-fledged paragon perfect Destroy ending.

Maybe Red Faction: Guerilla (but not its sequel, ugh) in a sense as well (it has a similar feel to post-apocalyptic anyway).

Shadowrun counts to some extent I think, though the apocalypse wasn't as harsh as in some cases.

I am probably defining post-apocalyptic differently I guess.

I'm not a huge fan of fallout, never played borderlands, rage annoyed me. World of Goo was neat, as was its fire-based sequel.

That said I'm not foolish enough to want to live in any of them. Maybe Shadowrun if it's a less grimdark interpretation of it... maybe. Probably not even then.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Border lands would probably annoy you too. I also found Rage to be annoying in many ways, and so tried border lands only to think it looks cool but also it's terribly annoying.
