So I just happened to notice a blurp that for some reason we Space Wolves have lost all our unique Fenris drawn pskyer powers that only our mighty Rune Priests can call upon, and had them replaced with all the Codex Astarte abiding powers all the other pskyers of the Imperium can use... I ask you my brothers and sisters...

WHAT BY THE SHAGGY ORANGE MANE OF RUSS AND THE ETERNAL WILL OF THE ALLFATHER IS THIS HERESY TO ALL THE SPACE WOLVES ARE!?!

I wholly blame Matt Ward for this affront to all that is Fenrisan, how dare you take away that which makes us the most diverse and unique chapter of Space Marines in all of the Imperium of Man.

I fully deny these new mandates, the Space Wolves have spit on the Administratum of the Imperium before and growled and fought in stark defiance when they tried to take our way of life away from us so many times and I do so now to Games Workshop, and I ask all my brother and sister Space Wolves to do the same! Nay I ask all Warhammer 40k players to rise up in defiance of these new edicts and fully ignore them and play with our mighty Fenris blessed psykic powers as we always have and always will!

Your try the patience and loyalty of your fan base Games Workshop, the later of which already falters, try our waning devotion to your products anymore, it you may not have one anymore, you have been warned...

Just ignore that part of the FAQ.

Seriously, don't let it get to you that much, since any tournament that's worth playing at, or any tournament worth going to, is not going to deny you the use of your own psychic powers.

This has been stated countless times across the internet, but you can include and leave out whatever you want regarding the game. People never take these statements seriously, but they really should for their own benefit.

Just follow whatever ruling was in place before this silliness and enjoy the hobby!

Citation needed.

On a more serious note, as has been stated this happened to every pre-6th Codex, not just yours. As a BT player my spontaneous reaction was hysterical giggling, but my more thought-through response is "that's a bit harsh, the oldest Codices are already behind by virtue of being old, GW kicking on old Codices is what's made me the hate-filled, crazy psychopath that I am.".

...nah, Jaws needed to die, and I'm willing to lose my other unique powers for it, especially because I've been using Divination almost exclusively the past 2 years.

Also... codex compliant powers? You know the Heretics use the same trees, right?

Pretty much all Imperials lost their unique powers. Grey Knights only got to keep the ones that were added into Demonology (no more Fortitude, etc.). Might as well accept it, as they'll most likely be gone from their next codex update, anyway.

I still can't believe GW keeps doing crap like this, and yeah I blamed Matt Ward, and truth be told twofold it might not have been him and who doesn't blame him for the decline in lore and BS rules but let's be honest, Matt Ward has earned about 89% of the flak that gets fired at him.

GW has to stop divorcing it's fanbase, we don't have to buy our models from them, a good chunk of people build a good chunk of their models these days out of parts either scratch made or bought from places like Forge World (some serious chunk-ception there ).

So whatever they hope to gain from these "balance" changes will only screw them more in thier own ass then they already have, the crimes of Matt Ward as previously stated included.

I would be very surprised if any tournament allows the use of the Space Wolf Codex powers in 7th edition, since they don't work with the new Psychic Phase.

The new Space Wolf codex is supposedly not too far away. Presumably there will be unique powers in there again.

Your powers will probably be back as a discipline random table in your next codex. Downside? The Primaris will suck, and only a couple of the powers that they put in the table will be any good.
Same will happen with BA in a short while. I'd put money down that they won't make wings of sanguinius the Primaris, which makes a huge difference in list building between knowing you'll have it or not.

As I said - I play Space Wolves and I don't care that we lost our powers. The only one it annoys me with is Njal, but he's too expensive anyway. And as insaniak said, Space Wolves are getting updated in the next couple months probably. Whining about GW in the meantime feels a bit pointless, especially considering that our army has been on the decline through all of 6th anyway.

Matt Wards crimes compare not to Phil Kelly, balance breaker.

Also, Special Snowflake wolves crying that they lost more stuff despite being pretty much SM + 1 with more 'UNIQUE' items then even Chaos.

By god though I honestly thought this was a parody, it's actually serious and that makes it hilarious!

as someone else said, the old powers DON'T WORK with the new psykic rules. now, GW COULD rewrite these rules for the FAQ. but I don't blame them for not doing so.

the old codexes will no doubt get new codexes soon.

Look on the bright side. you're absolutely right that in the long term this is soemthing that needs to be addressed.

which means SWs and BAs can proably expect a new codex sooner rather then later

I agree, SW should have their own powers. And just those. They never took part in the 1k Sons' Librarius program, so they shouldn't be able to access the powers therein. They use runic casting or whatever, so how can Castgar the Rune priest use the Iron Arm psychic power developed by the Cult Pavoni, masters of the Biomancy Discipline??

On moon miranda.

As fun as it is to blame Ward for things, I don't think there's any evidence that points to him exclusively, or at all. The FAQ's in general seem to be done by people who didn't write the book and don't play the game in general.

In general however, it's not just the space puppies, as others noted, this hit several books. Basically unless it's one of the Rulebook powers, it no longer exists. That said, most people aren't going to shed many tears for the loss of Jaws of the World Wolf.

People like you are an embarrassment to Space Wolf players who are actually rational and open minded. Let me guess, you believe in that "feet on ground like Russ intended" bull gak too?

Ever since Rune Priests got access to Prescience back in 6th, I've been using that way more often than the SW's own powers because they've been infinitely more useful to me, so it's not like I'm going to be missing much.

Because people draw powers from the warp.

If Castgar the Wolf pup discovered a technique he now calls the Strength of Fenris. It might just be a re-discovery of Iron Arm.

All runic casting is just accessing the warp.

Allow me to summarize the FAQ: "we're updating this codex within the next few months and we're too lazy to make a proper 7th edition update when it's going to be obsolete soon anyway". It's a pretty safe bet that SW will have their own powers when they get a new codex, since it allows GW to sell another pack of psychic power cards.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

How about the Tyranids? Ostensibly one of the two most psychically-potent factions in the game, the army of bioforms with biomorphs and bio-Titans and bio-bombs and hell, even Bio-Artefacts (wut), doesn't get access to biomancy? Seriously?

Or what about Chaos Sorcerers? The new psychic phase buffed them because of the way Spell Familiars work, but for a whole edition they had to be inferior to their Loyalist equivalents, even though the whole point of a CSM Sorcerer is that he is a Space Marine psyker who has ignored the rules and restrictions in search of power a Librarian (shackled by safety concerns and limits) cannot hope to achieve? Worse still, those Sorcerers specifically blessed by a Chaos God - the ones that, in fluff, can achieve supreme heights of power due to the backing of Chaos itself - are all terrible, especially the Tzeentch ones. Tzeentch, the god of magic.

I don't see why psykers who pretend not to be psykers, in a Chapter of psyker-hating guys, are what makes them "the most diverse and unique chapter of Space Marines". I understand that the Wolves are in need of an update, but the Rune Priest change being that significant is a bit of a push.

Because the rulebook powers are abstractions of possible powers. They aren't premade "spells" like in D&D or Elder Scrolls or something. Or do you think that Daemons, Tyranids, Eldar and Ultramarines sharing powers is fine, but not Wolves and Thousand Sons because they didn't train together?

Well, I think its perfectly fine that SW got the rulebook powers as all other SM chapters. These powers give you a variety of decent spells.

However, I'd stay away from daemonology powers as they kill your Runepriests quite easily.

I doubt this very much. Dark Angels, Codex: Space Marines and their supplements didn't get unique trees and I see nothing in the fluff that implies either Space Wolves or Blood Angels are so amazingly special as to have utterly unique psychic abilities.

However, I totally agree with the decision to remove these powers. They seemed completely extraneous to me when I returned to the game. I'm just pleasantly surprised they removed them now, rather than when the new codex arrives.
