Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?
|
With all the reboots of various films and series coming around at the moment, I got to thinking about what series I wish had got one more season. Assuming it was a direct continuation, with the same cast/production ect, what would be your picks? I think top of my list would be The Clone Wars. Ok, they technically did half of the 6th series on Netflix, that does leave those of us without that service a little out in the cold. There's no sign of a DVD release, so I may soon have to accept I'll never see the final series. Primeval would be next. Series 5 hardly had a conclusive ending, and there was still a lot of stuff left open. The show was consistently brilliant (I can't actually think of an episode I don't like) and I would have loved an ending to the plot arcs that weren't finished. And before anyone says it, New World (the Canadian Spin-off) doesn't count, it was rubbish. For something a little older, I wish they had made series 3 of The Tripods, the series based on John Christopher's 'White Mountains' novels. It was cut on the 2nd series, despite having the whole plot of the 3rd series mapped out. Also, Red Dwarf XI needs to happen at some point, and hasn't been ruled out by the cast/writers yet. Unfortunately, I think X got a bad reception among some fans which may have killed it. So, Dakka, which shows do you think deserve one last hurrah.

It wasn't dreadful. It was far too up and down in quality, but not dreadful. A second season of Firefly would have been preferable to the film. A sixth season of Babylon 5 with the Telepath War could have been interesting.

I would watch a second series of both of these. Two good choices

Wolverine and the X-Men. The end of season one prepares the show to do Age of Apocalypse. I would have killed to see that!! I honestly can't think of any show that deserved a second season more (Firefly got a movie to be S2, so I'll be content with that).

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

This one comes from the old days, but I would like to see a remake of the old British series "UFO". Good stuff, that was fairly well done for the time.
Primeval I would love to see again, but with the guard force better trained. It seemed like their headquarters was wide open to what ever anyone wanted to pull and the troops made it a habit to walk into a situation unarmed.

Firefly, of course, no question. I wouldn't even mind if they recast all the roles with younger actors now. The writing, as much as the actors, is what made the show so good.
If we're talking about something real old school, I've got one. For those, like me, who enjoy listening to the old radio shows on the SiriusXM Radio Classics channel, I think a modern reboot of "Yours Truly, Johnny Dollar" would work. We need a really good P.I. show again.

Firefly, but it seems we will get our wish anyway, so lets not waste it.
It's a tough one, most series that ended early and were good had issues, Fawlty Towers was an exception, but that ended after twelve episodes in order to guarantee consistent quality, and its a bit late now.

I watched it again a couple of years ago, it fell rather short of how I remember it.

One more series of Firefly? Nah. - Need a whole lot more than that!
Exactly one more series? Stargate SG-1 needed one to finish off the Ori plotline properly, as opposed to a rushed TV movie. One more season of SG:U wouldn't have hurt either, that was also a rushed ending.
One more series of The Sarah Connor chronicles would have been great. That would have been even just 13 more episodes of awesomeness.
Las Vegas just needed one more episode, nevermind series!

You threw me for a loop until I saw you were from the UK.
If there's any show I would have wanted one more season from, it would have been House. Or Dexter. Not because I just had to have more, but because they both ended on a note that left a sour taste in my mouth. Ending those shows like they did was lame.
For shows I just want more of? Babylon 5, Firefly, Star Trek: Enterprise, or Dollhouse.

I'm gonna say Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Mainly because it stops so abruptly. Watching the first two seasons is a big waste of time because the story is so unfinished. What's worse is it sets up a third season set in the post-apocalyptic future, which looks awesome, but we never get to see it.
I can't decide if I want another season for Dexter or not. On one hand, the ending was so gak that it seems a shame to leave it there. On the other hand the show had been getting worse. Maybe it was time to put it out of its misery. I think an alternate ending wouldn't go amiss, almost anything would have been better than what they did.
X-Files probably needed one fewer seasons. I would trade the last two seasons for a proper ending to the story.
Can never have too much, Red Dwarf, Futurama, or Star Trek TNG.

Stargate Atlantis.
As much as the show had faltered in quality over Seasons 4 and 5, it was a show that got cut off before it could do a proper end, leading to an appalling (and appallingly rushed) finale. That show needed one more season to wrap everything up.
Stargate Universe
I liked SGU's finale, but again it was a show cut off too early before it could tell its story. An extra season would've let them wrap everything up.
Wolverine & The X-Men
Discussed above already, the finale set up a good Age of Apocalypse storyline... and then the show was cancelled due to behind the scenes financial reasons.
Earth's Mightiest Heroes
Another show that suffered a very rushed finale, this excellent distillation of Marvel's greatest comic stories is easily one of the best cartoons I've ever seen (I even own it on Blu-Ray). Great characterisation ruined by the man in charge deciding that kids couldn't follow the serialisation of the show (so the latter half of the second season has many more stand-alone episodes), and then cancelled to make way for a new show that matched the Avengers movie more closely (and that show is terrible, with the cheapest shittiest flash animation I've seen in a while).
Clone Wars:
Cancelled for no good reason and whilst in production for season 6 and 7, Clone Wars got a final batch of episodes that, whilst good, failed to answer many of the questions fans had: What happens to Ashoka? What becomes of Rex? What about Maul and the plans Palpatine had for him? What about Ventress? And instead we get Rebels, a show no one asked for in place of a show that everyone loved.
There's something about being a Disney Cartoon that must give you a short shelf life.
