Well, I'd try to see if any other players want to keep playing 6th or any other edition you all have books for.
If that doesn't work, and you really feel burnt out, just take a break. Don't buy their stuff. Try some other games. Go bunging jumping, or don't because heights are terrifying.
Breaks are good, especially for 40k. Maybe when you come back in a few months, we'll have 8th edition.

Man, that's it! I almost forgot.
That's how you get your 40k fix without all the 40k nonsense.
Yeah, go play some Rogue Trader or Only War.
I played FFG's Edge of the Empire and had a blast (Star Wars, but same company).

I've gone on and off 40k a number of times. Currently in an off streak but still in the table top scene doing infinity, and looks like Ill be starting up full thrust soon. The only thing I would say is dont sell of your old models. I always kept mine so when me and the other guys got back into, I still had an army base and just grabbed a few new guys etc. Some of my friends did sell them, then rebuy... an expensive way to go about it.

This. For the win!
Shelve your 40k stuff. You may find a use for it later. You may not. Right now its too early to say, so park the decision. Use the time and money you were going to spend on developing your 40k hobby, on something else. Ask around your FLGS for what else is occurring (in that FLGS and elsewhere) and see if any of it interests you. Google tabletop gaming in your area. Chat with your mates. There's probably a whole load of stuff out there you never even realised. Life outside the 40k bunker is getting sunnier every day - enjoy it!

These folks have the right idea. Don't sell your stuff yet, but test the waters outside of 40k. There's a lot of great threads on Dakka about good alternative games.
My club has never been 40k focused, but those of us who do play 40k have pretty much universally decided not to do 7th edition. We've still got our armies and they will probably see battle using Warpath, In The Emperor's Name (use 2nd edition not Third) or even in the occasional game of 6th edition, but the GW train has taken us about as far as we want to go. Luckily we've got lots of other games we like to play also. Song of Blades, Kings of War, Of Gods and Mortals, Full Thrust, Mech Attack, etc, etc…
You might find something you like just as much, or (as much as I hate to admit it) you might find that 40k is where you want to be. Either way, you'll have some fun along the way.

Well if you are tired of a game and truly done with it, Ebay is a great place to make back your bucks...
But I think you are just frustrated for many reasons, because if you didnt care or were truly done you wouldnt bother posting "im sick of this and done".
Luckily you did it on a forums were that venting and justified frustration (in some cases) will be handled and walked through by fellow gamers.
You can probably still find games in the 6th rule set. You can still find games using FW. The book and rules are all guides, you can play any edition or add in any stipulation you like. As long as you find an opponent willing to do agree.
Also maybe take a break, find some other use for the models or other ways to get your 40k fix. When I get tired or need a break I go play "dawn of war" it always gets me psyched up to play the game, have fun with it instead of trying to build those super competitive broken list. Dawn of War tac squads with heavy bolters reminds of the nature of the game.
Good luck what ever you decide.
BTW I love your avatar. "SMITTYWORBERYAGERMANJENSEN!"

Another vote for stepping away from 40k and playing other games. There are a ton of games, both relatively less-played ones and big ones like Warmachine/Hordes that has grown to surpass 40k in my area. Most of them have freely available rules that you can proxy some starter games to get a feel for them.

I still get time to paint and model but not game so much. Im not saying go make a kid. Just find other things to do with your time and come back when your ready.

40k is like the lottery. You lose every game you don't play! Too bad on your local not letting you play with FW. Was it an Imperial Armory list or a Horus Heresy list? I'd play you.

Bronzefists42 wrote:I'm tired of all this. I've won two games in two years. The second time was my last time with a FW list. I come into my FLGS today and learn that I need 7th edition for a pickup game. Also that I could no longer use my FW list. I now have 2 $80 books I can't use. I have an army that can't win a game. I don't have the money or the motivation to buy and learn a whole new 40k edition. I love 40K but I have had a tough year and I'm starting to wonder if I should keep going.
So many things going on here. You won two games in two years? You can't just show up with some miniatures and roll some dice. You need to learn the game, learn what your army can/can't do and learn what your opponents are capable of. Learning the system and rules for various armies is part of the game. Remember the old saying "A lack of preparation on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine". Read, watch others, study the game. If you want tactical advice or help with lists, ask and engage the community. Don't whine.
What FW lists can you not use? I don't recall that 7th Edition prevents you from using HH lists. Is there some army you cannot use or do the new rules prevent you from using some deathstar internet list? With no details, I'm going to assume 7th has nerfed some power unit you were fond of.
You balk at the cost of a new rulebook and don't have the money to learn a new system. What? You purchased a FW army, but won't shell out $80 (less at online stores) for a new rulebook? Okay. And why does it cost money to learn a new edition? I have the same army I've had since 3rd edition. I got new rulebooks and some new minis (didn't need them, but my conversion skills are getting better), but the only real cost was the books and time.
I don't think most people here really care if you keep going or not. It's just a hobby. A game to play with friends or in a group/club. There is no law requiring you to keep playing.
Sorry if I sound harsh. I've been gaming for almost 30 years and really enjoy all aspects of it. Your post was not constructive or positive. If you are having a hard time winning games, post your list and listen to feedback. If you don't want to learn a new edition, then I'd quit gaming right now. Every game, whether it be RPGs, miniatures, CCG, or video games will have new versions that require you to learn new or additional rules. You never stop learning.

OP said he is having a rough year and is at a gaming crossroads and you attack because he isn't faithful enough to your game. All of your points could have been made in a positive manner.

@Crimson Devil - Maybe my post did sound harsh. It's not a personal attack and my apologies if it sounded like it. I wouldn't say anything online that I would not be willing to tell someone in person.
I made the comments I did because:
- "I've won two games in two years". How many have you played? 1000? Why not say something like "I'm having trouble winning, here is my list/army, how can I improve?"
- I just found it odd that someone would spend money for a Forge World army and then balk at having to buy a rulebook.
- 40K is not my game and I could care less if someone is 'faithful' to it. I enjoy it and a lot of other games. My comments about learning the game, rules, and interaction of those rules applies to any game.
- I don't think my comments were negative. I think it sounded harsh because I didn't just say "it's okay, play if you want to". I was trying to offer some (probably too honest) feedback to improve their game and experience. Complaining and quitting because things are hard won't win you much in gaming or life.

I was fairly tired when I wrote this so I should elaborate. I have trouble getting games in recently due to outside responsibilities. As a result I have trouble with getting a game in, much less adapting to whatever the hell popped up between now and Then. I own the hours heresy book but none of the models. I just use my old SM models. It's not exactly easy for me to find the problems with my playstyle let alone afford the stuff needed to "fix" it.

Fair enough, I don't necessarily disagree with you, only the perceived tone I read. I apologize for my assumption.

Unfortunately any wargame will require an investment in time and money to participate. The best option if you want to continue to play 40k the wargame would be to find a friend or two that can play when you're available with whatever ruleset is best for you.

I hear you Brinzefists42. I have completely felt the same way. I spent a lot of time and money on this stuff... and now I can't even use it because it is out of date ruleswise? Feth that!
Anyway, here is what I did:
First, I made a nice shelf and put a lot of my stuff on it.
Second, I found a friend who had a similar outlook on gaming as me.
Third, I built a gaming table in my basement and invited my firend over to play whatever the hell we wanted.
Fourth, I set aside a specific time every month that we would get together and play/paint stuff.
Fifth, we let our gaming interests guide us to whatever we wanted to play.
Slowly, we have added a few people into the rotation and we pretty much play a bunch of different stuff. Some of it isn't even wargames!

EDIT: A while back I bought Warhammer Fantasy 5th edition (the starter was $100 Canadian at the time) then bought the Magic expansion ($70 at the time) and an Army Book for $30. A playable army ran me only about $270 back then. A few years later sixth edition came out and I just couldn't justify the expense. I could easily afford it as the rulebook was cheap compared to the $200 of rules I bought to get into 5th edition, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |
