Killing is not a prerequisite for being an extremist. There are a lot of very extreme, illegal things one can do without resorting to killing.

Religion has no place in education.

Teach children about religion within the context of its influence on the world, but prayer, worship, bible stories, nativity etc etc should not be permitted IMHO.

Doesn't this all come back to the Blair government allowing the establishment of "Faith Schools"?
Always seemed like a bad idea to me. Same with the Academies and their lack of oversight.

Somewhere in south-central England.

There were Church of England schools before "faith" schools.

What Blair did was to extend the principle of state funding for religiously founded schools to other faiths which now include Roman Catholic, Jewish, Sikh, and Hindu as well as Muslim.

This was presented as supporting the principle of multiculturalism but in reality it is a classic British fudge to get around the problem of why you want and need to continue to support the official state religion (C of E) when there are nearly as many adherents of RC and Muslim in the country who are also citizens, pay taxes and so on.

Remember at the time there were (and still are) C of E bishops sitting in the House of Lords who would not have been motivated to vote with the government if they were losing their schools.

The other complication is that faith schools tend to get better results than bog standard comprehensives (there are various reasons for this) so they are popular with parents.

Yes, my best friends family has kids at one of those Birmingham schools. A family of armed service personnel, and the heavy discrimination was evident.

From evidence of the family non-Moslems got little classroom attention, bullying was rife and a blind eye was turned if the victim was non-Moslem, in fact in several cases the victim was disciplined for 'provocation' or 'racism' whichever stuck. Islamic parents were encouraged to lobby against non-Islamic teachers on the slightest excuse, which they did en masse, resulting in fear of disciplinary action by non-Moslem teachers which silenced them .

One story relayed to me was of a class 'talk about your father' day. As this kids father was in the RAF he was told not to make any presentation, lest he 'cause offense'. The next time this type of homework came up the same kid was refused to give his presentation because it was a 'dishonourable occupation'. Meanwhile the kids whose dad was in prison or unemployed got to make their presentation.

All this info is at least three years old, this problem has been going on for a long while.

Frazzled no understand. This is a public school? Frazzled likes the French model of extreme separation of church and state, despite being an angry Christian (oxymoron-hey never said I'd actually make it to Heaven, but I am sure TBone will be fine there without me). It makes sense when you realise public schools have been around for centuries. Back then they were the only schools open to the fee paying public, the alternatives was a church education or no education at all.

Public schools are a small subset of private schools, referring to the very oldest and prestigious dating from that time, and some more modern (Victorian) schools that offer similar quality.

Any fee paying school is a private school. Public schools are places like Harrow, Eton and Rugby.

OK I think.

Here a private school is, you know private. They can be religious based or not and only have to accept who they want to accept. You also don't have to go there. In fact you have to pay to go there.

I think Kilkrazy gave a pretty good rundown of the key elements.

I'd disagree with the statement at the end when talking about Muslim schools as I'm pretty sure that there have been quite a few in special measures over the last few years. Typically Catholic schools seem to achieve the best results when compared to other faith schools.

I believe on average, though, they still achieve better results than other schools (I could be wrong, though). I do agree with you on the last point, Catholic schools do quite well compared to the rest.

Something about appeasement.

I mean, we've heard about this kind of stuff for a while, but it's been Daily Mail usually screaming about it. Scary to hear real people talking about it actually happening.

You may well be right. There is a general public perception though that faith schools do better than secular schools. I suspect the RC schools may be the best.

The actual "public schools" are defined by the Public Schools Act:
