Love 40k, it's definitely my favourite game of all time. At present, mostly playing either Kill Team or Strike Force rules for it. Only thing about 40k is that sometimes I have had to be careful who I play against... with the wrong attitude it gets boring fast.

Second favourite is Saga, as I love the nice, simple mechanics.

Feeling very optimistic about the Great Crusade... things can only get better from here.

That was my first wargame! Fondly remembered. My most enjoyed game however would be Mordheim.

D&D 3.0/3.5 I can't begin to tell you how much I played that in college.
Mekton Z I loved designing new mecha and converting the entire range of Gundams over into these rules.
Cyberpunk 2020 This was my go-go RPG for quite a while. I'd convert other stories into these rules.
40k, but alas, I've left that for Warmachine and Infinity now.

Battletech has been my favorite game since I first played it sometime back in '91 or '92. I love the vast history of the setting, the factions, much of the artwork (even the early 80's big hair, big teeth portraits) and the sheer number of units to choose from.

Vampire: The Masquerade was the first RPG that I DMed and the World of Darkness (original one) remains one of my favorite RPG settings. It doesn't get better for me than Tremere and Tzimisce going at it. Mmm blood mages!

AD&D 2nd Edition was the first RPG I ever played. I like THAC0. This game defined much of my high school gaming experience and I have extremely fond memories of the encounters my friends and I played through. We still talk about some of those games too even 15 years later!

My favourite games were when I played my Dwarven army.

Especially when my dwarven thane and his small retinue of Grey Beards ripped apart an Empire flagellant group, then got charged by horsemen. The horsemen were slaughtered and my lone thane overran them, straight into the gunline.

Or when my dwarfs destroyed a band of Chaos Warriors 40 strong through the use of just firepower and warriors. It was a lovely day.

But to do with 40k, my favourite has to be when my small no tanks DA force went up against Ork mech army. They were killed, but it was a pretty decent and fun game to play and I enjoyed every minute of it.

I mostly play warhammer fantasy. But I have to say the most fun I have had in this hobby would be playing in a 40k league a few years back with my imperial guard.

this is why my favourite tactic vs dwarfs (with orcs) was to use an allied chaos sorcerer on a disc with bolt of change. Bye , bye all that crappy runic wargear

Oh, this is going to be a little long. I love each of my games for different reasons.

First was Dungeons and Dragons. 4th edition to be exact. This is what introduced me to tabletop games in the first place. I remember silly stuff happening like accidentally causing a cave-in due to a random gunpowder accident and three players taking three hours to kill three beetles. I made a few tweaks, but not a whole lot.

Then was 40k. 5th edition was what I stared with and it was the first tabletop when I played with someone else. I still play it today, and I've probably tweaked the most with this game than with any other.

Then was Marvel Heroic Roleplaying. This was very rules-light so I was able to improve storytelling. I sort of discarded the Marvel heroes in favor of making my own. This was also when I decided to play for the sake of narrative instead of for competitiveness. This is why I don't care so much about balance and instead favor chaos, action, and narrative.

Then came the Unisystem. (I'm going to regret saying this) This was when I decided to create a self-insert character. If nobody would play with me, I would play with the characters. I gave each their own persona. One was a priest that would "default to shotgun" in any situation. Another was an alcoholic Kermit the Frog, Another was a former French mafia thief. I changed mine to what I felt like.

Wargame would be 40k, followed by my limited time in X-Wing and my two games of Infinity. I do like the IDEA of warmahordes, but not matter how much I play of it, I just don't enjoy it was much as the others. Probably the setting (I do love Trolls though).

RPG wise would be either DnD 3.5 or this D20 Star Wars system my friend has. Both had very short, but VERY fun and crazy, campaigns.

1-Mordheim. Adapted this for all sorts of skirmish fun.
2-WHFB. (which has generated quite a stack of outdated books by itself)

1; Warmachine. Lovely, with well structured rules and plenty of room for tactical play.

2; Darkage. Fun, well structured and balanced.

3; WHFB. Big units, annoying to paint but fun to play. Pity about the meta armies that spoil things though.

Longest lasting, most games, most fun:

#1) Battletech.

Good variety, epic in looks and scenarios:

#2) 40k

For pick-up game fun and just plain it works:

#3) X-wing

Pathfinder and other D&D-like roleplaying games have been the most rewarding.

40k is the runner-up. The gameplay has some problems, of course, but the wholesale experience is fun.

Cosmic Encounter is probably a distance third. I split my time between a lot of different boardgames, but this one is the best.

Hrm. This is actually a great discussion topic. It's nice when there's really no wrong answer.

RPG:

2nd Ed AD&D. Throughout the majority of the 1990's (at least 8 years), we had a solid group that met at least three Saturdays each month for 12-15 hour long gaming sessions. We ran multiple different campaigns with multiple different DM's, the longest running of which lasted around three years.

Tabletop battle:

3rd/4th WH40K. I played anywhere from 4-6 games per week for about five years between two different cities. I had played Rogue Trader when it first came out, and a bit of 2nd edition, but didn't get sucked into the game until about 2002.

Tabletop skirmish:

Mordheim. When it first came out, about the only thing that would get our group away from 40k 3rd ed was a game of Mordheim. We'd all run 2-3 different warbands so that there was always an option to play at a higher or lower strength level, and it gave everyone a variety of play styles to use.

Board Games:

Stuck between Talisman (old version and new version) and Zombiecide. Tons of replayability, especially when you get different people around.

Electronic:

Toss up between the Civilization franchise and the Final Fantasy franchise. Over the last 20 or so years, I don't even want to know how many hours I've spent staring at a screen playing one of those games.

I really enjoy this game, too, but haven't really played it a lot yet. I accidentally allowed my bottle of Zap to leak all over the bottom of the box holding my warband, so now the entire group is in a blob of dried super glue. I haven't gotten the motivation to try to fix that situation. It's too depressing.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Hopefully might do some kind of my own 'top 10' when (if) I hit 10,000 posts..

Very tough one!

1) Necromunda/Mordheim - I'll lump these in together as they are slightly different aspects of the same idea. Wonderful versatility, tremendous room for expansion and imagination, cheap to play, good rule and campaign system. So many of my favourite wargaming stories come from this game, and it benefits (perhaps more so than any other game) from the old adage of 'you get out what you put in'.
2) Infinity - Quite simply one of the best game mechanics and balance of all time, with some of the best miniatures, and an extremely focused and intelligent group of rules writers and artists who are hell bent on giving their fans the best game possible. Can't go on enough about what a great game I think this is, and its pushed me into more painting and terrain building than any other game.
3) Epic Space Marine - Played this one to death when I was a teenager. Favourite memory is of a 20ft table with 25,000pts of forces a side; dozens of titans and gargants of all sizes, entire tank companies, absolutely fething epic! Only not higher because its simply so hard to find regular play these days and I foolishly sold nearly all of my stuff in late teens. Feel sorry these days for the current batch of customers that only have 'Apocalypse' - you have no idea what you are missing!

Just missed the cut:
- 40k, through sheer man-hours played, and I seriously loved it when I was younger. Game has moved away from me as I have moved away from it now, but still has a fond place in my memories. The guys with big shoulder pads will always have a place in the miniature cabinet.
- FoW. Very few sights beat a well laid out table of 15mm terrain, with painted and themed historical units. It's probably the historical game I have played the most of as well, but it perhaps missing a little 'soul' compared to my top 3.
- D&D. Not played as much as I would have liked, but again some very good memories from university years.

Confrontation. Gorgeous models and great narrative gaming. Just brilliant fun.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

Overall, that is very hard to say. Each game I have played has given me a good amount of enjoyment, aside for Fantasy

40K: My first miniature game, lots of fun initially it is where i got the love of building minis and playing.

Infinity: My second game, the rules are great, the skirmish feel is something I like more than the scale of what 40k is now, plus the minis are better in my opinion. It is such a challenging game in that you must have such an awareness about what your guys are doing, what your opponents guys are doing and the mission. Plus it feels like a serious skirmish game (more on this below.)

Malifuax: The rules are good and the minis are once again great. But while Infinity's setting and dynamic of play is a serious affair of spec ops and line troopers trying to advance their nation's power or hold back alien invaders, in Malifuax when in a scrap you might get hit in the face with a banjo by a gremlin, killed by a blind swordswoman, put into a pinebox, attached by an undead hooker, or attacked by puppets. So while I like the seriousness of infinity, Malifuax gives me the comic relief with good rules, games that not around centered killing the other crew, funny abilities and rules for models.

X-Wing: Good simple rules that are easy to learn and teach, ships from the movies and the EU, and everything is prepainted. As a quick pick up game or something to kill time this game works wonders. I like how they are making the ships play and current selection. FFG has a good thing going and in my area it has exploded in popularity as it is cheap, easy to play, and the prepainted ships are a big selling point for a lot of people.

So this is why I play more than one game because each one gives me something different which is nice.

Fun list - I enjoyed reading everyone's choices!

#1 for me... with a big bullet is Necromunda. Actually my 2nd miniatures game, but my fave by far. So much fun crazy stuff to do. Dripping with theme - scratching the post-apoc itch, with a tough or RPG elements thrown in.

#2 - D&D miniatures. When we weren't playing D&D we got in some fun games with the miniatures playing the skirmish game. What was so great was that you could quickly throw together all kinds of different theme lists and have crazy little battles. Army of Drow scorpians vs. a team of all wolves and werewolves. A horde of goblins backed up by a Fire Giant priest giving them all magic flaming weapons vs. an all ghost army - basically every night you'd run into people running just wild and wacky stuff - it was great fun.

#3 - Probably the CIV series with Alpha Centauri - not a tabletop game but probably the one game series I've spent more time on then anything else.

Hah - yup that's it. The best part was the ability to customize your own units with the different armor/weapon/chasiss and special abilities. My favorite tactic was to rush the good engines and get the little helicopter/gyrocopter chassis and stick a colony pod in it. I usually had 4 or 5 cities that could churn them out every turn or every other turn and expand my colony amazingly fast. I nicknamed them "Seed Pods".
