Subject: death metal band to play inside airtight box in public
Death metal band Unfathomable Ruination are to perform in an airtight, soundproofed box outside the Gherkin in London this week.
Visible but inaudible to the public, the band's set will form an art installation by Portuguese artist João Onofre called 'Box Sized DIE', which is part of new exhibition Sculpture in the City.
"The box is soundproofed, determining and restricting the performance’s duration to the length of time in which the oxygen is expended," a blurb on the installation reads.
"Outside the cube, viewers observe its strange vibrations, only viewing the band’s entrance and exit to the performance space."
Packed into the tiny cube, Unfathomable Ruination will play tracks from their album, possibly including hits like 'Edges of Disfigured Atrocity' and 'Futile Colossus Decapitated'.
The band will perform from 3 July - 1 August 2014 at 6pm Wednesday to Friday.
In another exercise of musical futility in the name of modern art, The National last year played their track 'Sorrow' for six hours straight at MoMA, an installation Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson titled 'A Lot of Sorrow'.
I've never heard of this band before today, but the news of this "art display" has been circulating some of the metal websites I frequent...
...but I wonder why they didn't get Asphyx or Suffocation to do this instead.

See, crap like this makes me wonder why artists can get nice downtown lofts in St. Louis for $200 a month. They aren't actually contributing anything to society, so feth their special "rewards".

Well, there's women spraying ink out of their hoohahs and calling it the birth of whatever. All you need is some hipster art critic that approves and bam: profit.

That's an option? I can crap out occasional post modern art for a cheap apartment. Beats the one I'm paying 7 times as much for in Soulard...
"Sure, it looks like a wooden frame with no canvas, but it's, like, all about the negative space, man. It's a metaphor for (pause during conspicuous bubbling noise) the ash borer epidemic. I mean, sure, no one wants them, but like, they don't want to be here either..."

They're going to walk by and look at these funny guys thrashing around with no sound and think "What the feth are those idiots doing?"
And then keep walking.
I guarantee it.
No no, they can only see them as they go in or come out of the box. Unless they set up a screen.
So they'd think "Oh it's a box" and that's probably about it.
For all anyone knows outside they could just play cards or something.
Actually, there's a trap door in the bottom of a box and the box is placed over a manhole cover
When the door is closed, they will sneak out into the sewer, to a pre-prepared sections with a couple of sofas and a tv...
But lets face it, the artist is doing this because his parents made him wear a shirt and trousers as 'casual clothes' when he was a child, and the band is doing this because hey, any publicity is good publicity...
And that is why you hear people yelling FOR THE EMPEROR rather than FOR LOGICAL AND QUANTIFIABLE BASED DECISIONS FOR THE BETTERMENT OF THE MAJORITY!

Actually, this is pretty metal... I wish the box was clear so we could watch.
Reminds me of Metalocolypse where they made an album which no one could listen to.

To be honest, I don't see the point. If the box was see-through, it would actually provide a surreal experience in which you can see that sound is obviously being made but without hearing it, which would be odd.
But this? This is just a box... It's utterly pointless.
Unless it's a variation on some old theories. Schroedinger's Metal Band, anyone?
