Highlord with a Blackstone Fortress
Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.
|
I am fairly happy with the boxset, except for its size.
it doesnt have a lot, and it appears that it is reusing regular kits rather than making new ones, characters aside. I wonder if this is a symptom of declining finances.
In any event i have no comments to pass on the Space Wolves, onkly that I wish they were regular marines and am disappointed there are so few.
As for the orks, the declining quantity compred to Black Reach is so noticable, but at least the selection is better.
Kans - I like them, and this is a good way to get more.
Nobs - I dont need more nobs, however its good to see that you get as selection of wargear rather than slugga nobs. a single stormclaw boxset will get you all the nobs you need for your boyz mobs, two sets from swaps may get you spares to swap in and out klaw nobs according to points available.
As for Grots - I would have prefered more orks, but with these starter sets its a matter of what you end up with if you spam them, and several packs of grots wont go amiss. You need about thirty to make good use of heir numbers anyway.
All in all for someone who spammed Black Reach to get his army and topped up with select boxsets this set will offer excellent add ons, for a starter player its far less useful.
|
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

as mentioned several times on this thread... this is not a starter set. Dark Vengeance will return, and then be replaced in its turn. THis is the first of a series of special campaign boxes, which will presumably combine stock figures with new special characters.
It also means there will be a lot more mini rulebooks around, which is entirely a good thing.

I'm waffling on this one. The ork force is thoroughly underwhelming, containing not a single model I actually care about (I play Kult of Speed), but if I get a mini rulebook too? I might still buy it just for that.. I just don't like the whole "while supplies last" high pressure sales pitch.

True, but I'd have to wait until they released on for my other army, which is vanilla marines. Not sure how long that would be, seeing as how we just got a new codex. I might just buy the set and resell the models I don't want on ebay. I might be able to a least find a use for those nobz...

I love those minis, damn shame though. Was planning to use money to do my chaos army, but now the Wolfies are back and running. I've got about 750 points atm, but with that box, I could easily add another 1000pts.. make Krom a Rune Priest, and get some Lone wolfs and Wolf guard from the termies. And do a small orc army eventually, when i feel like it.

I've gone for two sets and a battle force of space wolves. I've built and painted the vehicles for them a few years ago but never gotten round to getting the troops for my puppies.
The orks will lose the kans and the rule books, this will hopefully fund the snazzguns I've brought from a bit seller to turn the nobs into flashgitz. Grots will become artillery crew and ammo runts.
Overall I'm actually pleased with the contents, it could be better but as it's full sprues it'll be easier to convert, having converted many boxes of black reach I don't say that lightly.

I don't get the limited edition stuff, i mean it's obvious that they're trying to push the "get it while it's hot! supplies are limited!" agenda, but that's generally not something you see for commonplace things...
That said though, I am likely going to pick one up. I have considered starting a Space Wolf army for nearly 20 years, now seems like as good a time as any

GW have discovered a way to eek even shorter term profits from their already short-term profit plan.
This is the kind of box that should be sold in toy store chains. Instead GW makes it limited and tells no one outside of an unlisted YouTube video.

Has anyone calculated out if this is a good deal?
It looks like there are a lot of units here that have regular boxes and good poses, and aren't just click together started box quality.
Does the math add up? Is this a good deal for two people starting ork and space wolves armies?

The total cost for all the models included, minus the two special characters is 175 USD on the nose, meaning you save $50 on the purchase price of the models, plus get the mini-rulebook, and the campaign book, and two special characters, for free. It's a heck of a deal.

Ah, my wife was in town today by my FLGS (4th Planet Games in Wrexham) and phoned me up to say "want me to pick anything up from here?" So I've ordered and paid for a set to split with my son. Only 10% off RRP, but it's good to support the local shop...
Glad to see Krom is a multi-part mini -- it'll make the head swap to turn him into Krommetta Dragongaze MUCH easier.

It is a very good deal.
Kans - $46.25

Gretchin - $16.5
Grey Hunters - $37.25
WGT - $50
Book - ~20
Krom - ~20
Grukk - ~20

Somewhere around $250 for $125. Even just the minis are 175 so a 30% discount with 2 free characters and 2 free books.
I was figuring the Campaign book being prices $33 like the Apoc supplements and the mini rule book being similar to 6th eds limited mini rulebook around $40. Either way, It's between $250-$300 worth of stuff that you can get for a really good price.
