And slight discount? No... the price on this one is pretty good.

And they should be doing this every 6 months. I'd say every quarter, actually, but that might be a bit much. In fact, do a campaign a year, and done in 4 parts, one for each quarter of the year. Develop the story, make the boxed sets relevant to each stage of the campaign, and have a main campaign book and then the boxes contain mini-campaigns.

I think people on this forum are underestimating the demand. You assume they only made 4-5k, but the demand could have been way higher than expectations because Wolves have been itching for new models and this deal was FANTASTIC.
I don't know if any of you guys played Wood Elves but when they happened, things were selling out before they were released because GW bought into the "no one wants to play wood elves" myth and didn't have the supply to meet the demand. They still aren't back up to speed on Wood Elf stock.
I don't think there is some woah-is-me conspiracy out there to try and screw over the fan base, I think it was simply a rediculously good deal that GW normally doesnt do, at a vary friendly pricepoint ($125 vs. the Christmas saving bundles of like $400) and people jumped on it. I went in yesterday and preordered mine. Just like I did with Wood Elves.
I work in advertising so lets see if I can shed light on this:
Marketing involves finding the sweet spot for a product, and then erring on the side of too little supply vs. too little demand. Fact is, they most likely used current sales figured for Wolves figures with current preorders of Orks to figure out a sweet spot for how to limit this release and have enough to fill demand without ending up having too much supply in their warehouses. Problem is, like the Wood Elves, Wolves are a dated army meaning sales are down for their models, so there are "sleeper buyers" who have full armies painted up that will pounce on a deal like this. Or guys who only buy second hand but can't turn this deal down despite normally not buying direct from GW. This then inflates the buyers for this box, exceeding demand expectations. A lot of factors can result in under-supply, none of which are "Lets pull a fast one on our fanbase just because we're evil"

I drool over this prospect. Uhg and it would get me starting yet ANOTHER army because it would be so exciting to get the boxes just to continue the story.
Seriously, you understand the marketing goldmine that GW has "stumbled upon" I think we can see more of these, and I also think these kind of things can slow down releases and save GW from "buyer fatigue" since they've sped up their army releases.

But yeah, I'm happy enough with the boxed set itself... the whole "so limited you needed to preorder it day 1" thing is what makes me unhappy

But if they sold more then they'd run out of stock and wouldn't have any models to sell anyone! Prices must remain high so that there's enough out there for the people who want them bad enough!
They can't just produce more product when they run out, you know.

Well yes, I'd agree with that, but that's just a symptom of GW's "one step forward, two to the side, and then a 30 second sprint directly backwards" policy.

You could give them to a friend who has some interest in starting 40k. That's how I got started. I had some vague ideas of starting an IG army because I liked the Praetorians and had picked up some Praetorian Guard Heavy Weapons teams on discount. However, my friend (who I had introduced to mini gaming through WHFB) gave me spare SM stuff (a Land Speeder & 2 Tactical Squads IIRC) so I went Blood Angels instead.
Still have those Praetorian HW teams though, and not planning to sell them. Still like them, although if I ever did Praetorian Guard I'll buy Warlord Games Zulu Wars British Colonial Infantry and just " 40k" them. Cheaper than trying to hunt down the real deal. {Also can use them in the VSF skirmish game In Her Majesty's Name.}

*Nod* I could have afforded the limited box set they put out back then, but I did not pull the trigger. So yes, kinda regretful.
Don't remember what year it was either ... It was the year GW did the huge "Massacre at Big Toof River" diorama for Games Day[?]. Since lots of people were interested, GW made the box sets.
"Orks sir! Thousand of them!"
"Right! By platoons, volley fire!"
Edit 1: Found it! "Massacre at Big Toof River" was part of the UK Games Day '97. Seventeen years ago ... wow.

I have a feeling there will be one with every pair of codex releases from now on. Release one codex, release a box set with a huge discount - lets not pretend otherwise, this box represents a massive saving on list- then release the second codex when loads of people already have half an army for it. I can be critical of GW for their actions, but this makes sound business sense.
I'll be buying the first one that features Blood Angels, whatever else is in the box.

For those who were concerned about the imbalance of the two factions in the set, White Dwarf addressed that.
There are 3 missions.
The first mission(Green Tide, Grey Fog) starts with just the Grey Hunters against all of the Ork infantry(no Killa Kans).
The second mission(Fortress 26) is all the Wolves against just the Killa Kans(Krumpa's Killa Kans) and Gretchin unit(called Rustgob's Runts) The Killa Kans operate as individual models and both the Killa Kans and Gretchin mob can be 'recycled' into play if the Wolves completely wipe out those units.
The third mission(Gofftown) is everything v. everything and using the formations. Grukk's Rippin' Krew have access to Grukk's tellyporta array which means they can all Deep Strike. Fierce-eye's Finest are an interesting one where once one unit in the formation has shot at or charged an enemy, successive units in the formation who choose the same target re-roll failed attempts to shoot or charge.

....Which is something I absolutely LOVE. When a box set has pre-set missions that can be played using ONLY the contents of the box, its a winner for me.
Combine that with the fact that you get a great deal on models and two different formations for use other games of 40K, and it looks like GW have it out of the park with this one, at least as far as I'm concerned.
Now I just have to find one!
