For a set of home rules I am making, I am also rewriting all the fluff for the armies, (since I, by and large, dislike GW's fluff) so wanted to know if you good folks have any good thoughts or ideas.
I already came up with a Space Marine chapter that is a rather comedic jab at the US (they have members from all different chapters, the American colours on their shoulder pads and even have the acronym USA).
It's a comical game, as I always felt it should be! Out with the grimdark, in with the humour.

There's already the United States Space Marine chapter. They're called The Invaders. Combat doctrine involves bombing the gak out of their targets ahead of the attack and then taking huge unnecessary losses in frontal assaults.

Yeah I'd rather not parallel real world events, the world I live in already is crappy enough, I don't need it in my nonsense escapist miniature games lol

I don't know how you can take the piss out of something that has already taken the piss to the degree 40k has.
I mean, there was a Librarian that went Super Saiyan and cut a space ship in half.

Yeah, though that name was chosen because I am really unimaginative at choosing forum names. It was almost Crystal Pepsi
Eh I've invested enough time and money that, well I'd like to play the game. What else am I supposed to do with these armies? I am not playing 7th, that's for damn sure.

Nothing wrong with Seventh.
That said, you haven't given us a real idea of what you want to build this fluff on, so we can't really help. You said 'America', but then shot down the suggestion because it was 'too close to real life'. You can't get much closer to real life than America.

really the only change from 6th to 7th was the psyker phase and additional list building options. if no one on your group has an intreast in using said options, those options are irrelevent.

Well for example I feel a lot of the space marine chapters kind of boring,
I mean sometimes they get silly to the point of facepalming (imo like Canis Wolfborn),
Things in 1st ed weren't so grimdark, I wanna capture a bit of that.
But at the end of the day, I am really just writing some fanfiction.
(I didn't play 6th either, partly due to a general dislike of the rules but more so because I preferred fantasy, and ultimately still do to the current ruleset, they are too alike and I generally like fantasy models more).

Then, not to put too blunt a point on thing, just write the damn fanfiction and get it over with. I really don't see the purpose of getting feedback from the fluff-focused people when it is your express desire to break the fluff.

If you want to get close to the days of Rouge Trader well to start off is simply using the Rouge Trader Fluff and go from there, the only armies fluff you would have to modify would be the Necrons and the Tau and that would not be so hard to do if you or your friends play those armies.

If there were some details you wanted to tweak, it'd be fine. I personally think the fluff would be better if every Chapter had 100,000 Space Marines, instead of 1,000. I also think the fluff would be better if all the stupid Horus Heresy books were ignored. The Primarchs are just wangsty.
But what you're talking about is changing the entire tone of the work. Changing it from the ground-up, like another poster said. At that point you'd be better off creating your own universe.
Imagine if I went in and said I liked My Little Pony, but I feel like it'd be better if it was about human detectives in Chicago in the 20's, instead of ponies in whereveristan. And I would be getting rid of the characters to make room for my satire. Why would I even be calling it My Little Pony? Why would I even be going to My Little Pony fans for advice?

where the hell was canada on d-day? Barely there. Where the hell was canada when the Japanese started to invade the aleutians? Nowhere. My grandmother tells me stories of how they lived in Michigan and would go to Canada to buy nonrationed goods and would always see young men loitering on the street corners. She would say, in the us they werent men loitering, they all went to win the war or build things to win the war. The one unit your country sent was pathetic, so just be quiet.
This is not the place for flaming or insulting other countries, DakkaDakka tries to be a friendly forum where we can talk like normal people instead of insulting people who were probably not even alive during WWII. Omg you're a bad person because I associated you with something you had nothing to do with and used it against you.
Anyway, OT. I agree with many of the posters here, just work up from RT fluff if you want it to seem like RT, it's pretty simple. Have half-Eldar Librarians if you want

We do not deserve it. I will not get into the debate on where the best place is however if it is better their move there. Where you want to live is opinion. I like the us better than canada but thats just me. And im not Canadian. Can we get back to the point of the thread WITHOUT insulting countries and inviting others to insult countries by insulting countries. I also flagged myself.

This is the 40k Background discussion board, not a place to discuss real-world history/politics.
I was going to clean up the above posts and remove these references since they are not relevant to this section/thread (and some insulting).
However, as it seems this thread is not actually about 40k Background at all from the OP, I am going to lock it (independent game background should be discussed in the Miscellaneous Games board)
