I dunno, they're offering tutorials and hobby tips at the new games day equivalent. Wasnt the last complaint that games days are just shopping events these days, now hobby content is being added and that isnt right either?

This is still more content, its hobby interaction, its events at the event that involve more than just queueing to save on FW postage. Its an improvement.

They're offering a painting class, why wouldn't they be using their own paints for it? They're offering a conversion class, why wouldn't they be using their kits to show it off? You're being overly cynical here. That would be like looking at the old conversion guides in WD and just exclaiming that it was a corporate shill to buy more kits. Of course it'll make them money, that's kind of their goal, but that's potentially useful hobby content. Watch their painting videos on Youtube. They're actually pretty helpful, even if they stick to GW paints exclusively.

That's a fair enough point, and it's certainly a step in the right direction. But you just know that none of those conversion clinics are going to say 'use a bit of plasticard here' - and for those that can remember that kind of phrase regularly appearing in WD each month (or, in fact still experience it through other outlets) that is always going to be a stumbling block.

Well. Depending on how you look at things, GW is so completely gak these days that new The HHHobby content isn't right because it is just more HHHobby gak.

I mean to be fair it will after all be just reasons to shop for GW crap, which as we all know is at best the same as stuff from other sources but a lot more expensive, and at worst more expensive and lower qiality.

Look into your deepest heart of hearts. Do you honestly believe GW is going to charge you £30 to see lots of useful stuff?

Sure its better, but its still worse then before it went to gak in the first place. Still don't change the fact that wasn't what the complaint are about, so impyling we are complaining about GW giving us what we want is, Wrong.

I was actually semi-serious with my last line there; I want to believe GW will "do the right thing" when this sort of information arises....but I just struggle to given their track record.

What a surprise. A company runs an event, uses and tries to sell it's own products and promotes it's own stuff... What else do you expect?

They realized Games Day had become something bad, so got rid of it and are trying something new. Rather than saying "Ok. It looks like GW are trying to do something we asked for, giving more content, workshops, games and not just another sales event with no savings, lets see how this pans out" people are just screaming "It's GW! It's going to be gak!". How about just waiting and seeing, and criticizing after the event if it is due?

To be honest I expect a company running an event for promotion of its own goods not to charge visitors for the privilege of going into what is in essence a large pop-up shop.

If the seminars and other stuff are actually good, then obviously that makes a difference for fans, and may justify a ticket price, however as you say we shall have to wait until after the event to find out if GW will have managed to turn over a new leaf in that respect.

Everyone is hopeful that these seminars and demos will be worth the money, but we've seen enough of GW's behaviour to be anything but skeptical. I really hope the painting demos are more than just sales pitches.

personally, Games Day has only ever been about the Golden Demon competition, a chance to chat with the studio guys, get my hands on the event mini and FW show only models, and catch up with friends...
it sounds like Warhammerfest still has all that...

sure, the days of free grab bags, and event mini included in the cost of the ticket, were nice, but things change and get more expensive every year...
this is true for almost every product i need to live, let alone the luxury items i choose to buy...

i love GW for the art, fluff, and plastics, which are still just as good, to me...
i don't use GW paints and brushes, have never bought a Finecast mini, and get 90% of my stuff (books and minis) at a discount...
i haven't bought a WD or Visions since my suscription ran out in March, nor do i support the crazy "cash-grab" moves that GW makes, so one can see why i am so positive all the time...
i simply buy what i like, most often at a a nice discount, and don't sweat the rest...

i have enjoyed every GW event i've ever been to, so i am glad that they didn't just can the whole thing altogether...
my last Games Day L.A., in 2008, i hung out with Gary Oldman, had my stuff on display in the Demon Lounge, walked away with a few finalist pins, and poured over Jes Goodwin's sketchbooks with Allan Carrasco!!!
yet, people had been saying the Games Day was dead for a few years before 2008 already...

for me, there is no HHHobby, because i never drank the Kool-Aid...
there is just some great art, fun fiction, awesome models, and a lot of good friends...

cheers
