So whilst we have the "movies that scared you once but not now" thread going thanks to Asherian, I figured we should have a companion thread for films which terrified you then and still continue to terrify you now, perhaps even more so.

To kick things off, Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.

Norman Bates is absolutely terrifying. Not because he is some unstoppable killing machine, or terrifying alien come to eat your brain but because he could actually be real.

There are and have been people out there like him and you might have encountered them without ever realising it. That is scary.

None. I have yet to be scared by a film.

Yes, my life does suck.

The original "Hitcher". There was something very dark about that movie. Also Seven. I will never watch that movie again.

The American version of The Ring still gets to me.

Great topic!

I still get the Heebie-Jeebies every time I see the original "The Exorcist"

More recently I thoroughly enjoyed "The Conjuring".

Gotta love a good horror flick!

Now I can't wait to watch "Zombeavers"!!

Remember: If you get bit by a zombeaver, you turn into a zombeaver! This one looks so terrible it might be good for a few yucks!

Ha!

Same for me - especially if you watch it late at night, all alone.

Which is what I foolishly did when I first watched it!

My first viewing of The Ring was when I was home from college and my older brother went on about how scary it was.

"Ha!" I said, cockily, "I can handle it no problem."

Midnight screening.

Baaaaaaaad idea.

Actually, what gets me most about The Ring today is the tape itself, it is still genuinely creepy and unsettling.

Really, the only movie that creeps me out is "The Descent". I've been spelunking before, and I know them feels of claustrophobia. Add some mutants monster-people to it, and yuuuuck.

The Descent was a really good film which did monster-in-the-dark right. Tiny glimpses of the monsters, just out of the light, in a tiny crack in the wall etc. until the tension has really mounted. Hell, the first time in the film one of them is shown most of the time you miss it (so did the caver cast, in fact ). Add in the brutally bleak ending (in the UK version) and it's a great horror film.

The sequel was pants compared to the first one though. Completely ripped away all the claustrophobia and realistic lighting and flat out showed you the monsters within the first half hour. But then that's a problem all films of that type have, you already know the monster. Good sequels need to be very creative to get around that.

Agreed with Se7en and Psycho, as neither one of them are outside the realms of possibility. Saw really isn't either, but as I found the original to be a rip off of Se7en (characters almost identical in film-appearance), I found it boring. So those two are creepy on the grounds of completely possible. Also, Sinister got to me. The first Jurassic Park and The Mummy both scared me when I was a kid (obviously just fun now). Alien was also a bit creepy at the time I watched it (I was 12).
Jaws, Exorcist, the Shining...these have all gone down as "scary films". I yawned through all of them. Didnt help that Stanley Kubrick's Shining sucked donkey balls. The Stephen Webber version that came years later was far superior. Like able characters, followed the actual storyline...and stalking hedge-animals made it far more enjoyable than ugly wife, hedge maze, ignores entire book except names. Honestly, Jack Nicholson was the ONLY good part of that movie. His acting=awesome. Rest of movie=floppy turd.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

GOOD call on JAWS - that movie has single-handedly caused generations of people to be very uncomfortable while swimming in the ocean!

And the (near) extinction of many shark species, so well done there.

For me.. Original The Fly, I still refuse to watch that.

This doesn't terrify me as creep me out. My wife and I both got that from the movie and anytime I watch it I avoid plant life for a while.

Alph and Sol, I said Jaws was a bore-fest for me. Tons of people were terrified, I was bored. I think I saw it when I was 13 or 14....I'm 29 now. The movie did absolutely nothing for me.

By the way, Jaws was a baby. My grandfather is friends with the guy Captain Quint was modeled after (he actually was designed off a sharker in Montauk), and the guy went out sharking the day after Jaws hit theaters. He found a school of Great Whites, and caught the baby of the group: it was two feet longer than Jaws.
TL;DR-they grow them bigger than Jaws.

I saw Jaws when I was about 5 and it left it's mark, a special prize should be given to my dad for that one. Been swimming in the ocean plenty since, but can't shake that creepy feeling.

Despite being a bit dated I still find the 80's version of the Thing to be creepy, the music and the mood of the movie are great at building tension.

Both Frailty and Ravenous also hit a very creepy and slightly disturbing chord, Frailty mostly because it makes you wonder what's going through the kids minds while they watch their dad murder people with an axe, and Ravenous because cannibalism and extreme isolation in the winter is always creepy. Insomnia is another one that plays with winter in the remote wilderness and a psycho nut case running around.

I laughed my ass off throughout Ravenous.

The only horror movie that really ever freaked me out or probably will is the Thing.

The shark in the movie was supposed to be 25ft (Quints correction of the size when they see it on the boat). Average size of a Great White is about 13ft for males and 15ft for females. 20ft+ is uncommon. If he caught one that was 27ft long (2ft longer than Jaws) and considers it a baby... I'd question his sharking experience.

Dark Crystal, I watched it as a really young child and it scared the ever living crap out of me.

It wasn't until about 2-3 years ago that I tried to watch it again, and it still completely freaks me out, I still to this day have never been able to finish it, don't even know what it is that sets me off, but I'll never finish it

Se7en and 8mm still creep me out. Just the thought that it can actually happen.

Jaws. Even in my hot tub, I look for dorsal fins before I get in.

Silence of the Lambs. Something about a stone-cold, intelligent, crafty, sadistic, and suddenly violent killer just puts you on edge. Plus the dancing with the weener tucked back was funny as feth. Reminds me of camp...

I'll 4th or 5th The Ring. I'm not a horror movie buff, and I find the jump-scare tactics lame. However, the scene where they quickly cut to the first victim was pretty fethed up. The tape didn't scare me, but the creepy chick coming out of the TV was bad/wrong!

The first 2 Halloween movies terrify me still. It's the shots of when someone walks by in the foreground, and you see Michael Myers standing outside in the distance through a window. If I re-watch one of them now, as I do sometimes, it still freaks me out for a few days.

Although I wasn't scared of Event Horizon, I still find it quite disturbing.

I think the 80's version of The Thing is one of the best horror movies ever, period. Incredible tension.

My parents were very open about letting me watch movies when I was a kid as long as it wasn't overly gratuitous.

8 years old and my dad lets me stay up late to watch Aliens, I didn't sleep for two days. Now it's one of my favourites to watch.

But a movie that still scares the daylights out of me...

Cannibal Holocaust. Words can't describe how utterly traumatizing that movie is. Not sure if it counts as a horror movie but it scares me.
